The Chase Freedom Flex® and the original Chase Freedom® — which is no longer open to new applicants — can earn 5% cash back, issued as 5X Ultimate
You need to activate the bonus each quarter, understand what Chase considers an eligible purchase, keep track of the $1,500 quarterly spending cap, and know when it makes sense to shift or prepay an expense. If you do, you can earn up to 7,500 points per eligible card account each quarter — or 30,000 points per year — from bonus-category purchases.
This guide focuses on the strategy behind maximizing Chase Freedom's rotating 5X categories. How Chase Freedom 5X Bonus Categories Work
Each quarter, Chase announces one or more bonus categories for the Freedom Flex and the original Freedom Card. After activation, eligible purchases earn a total of 5% cash back on up to $1,500 in combined spending across the quarter's categories.
Chase tracks these cash-back rewards as Ultimate Rewards points. That means 5% cash back works out to 5X points per $1 spent. If you maximize the quarterly spending limit, you will earn:
- 1,500 base points: The 1X you would earn on $1,500 in purchases even without the quarterly bonus.
- 6,000 bonus points: The additional 4X awarded through the activated quarterly categories.
- 7,500 total points: Worth $75 when redeemed for cash back at 1 cent per point — and potentially more when combined with an eligible premium Ultimate Rewards card.
The $1,500 limit applies to combined purchases across the quarter's categories, not to each category separately. It also applies per card account. Purchases by authorized users count toward the primary cardholder's $1,500 limit, while a cardholder with multiple eligible Freedom accounts has a separate limit on each one.
After you reach the quarterly cap, additional spending no longer earns the 4X quarterly bonus. You will receive the card's otherwise applicable earning rate instead.
Note: The Chase Freedom Unlimited® and Chase Freedom Rise® do not participate in Chase's rotating 5X categories.

- Earn 5% on up to $1,500 on combined purchases in bonus categories each quarter you activate
- Earn 5% cash back on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠

- Earn 3% on drugstore purchases
- Earn 1% on all other purchases
Best Ways To Maximize Chase Freedom 5X Categories
The goal is not necessarily to spend $1,500 every quarter. It is to earn 5X on as much planned spending as possible without buying things you do not need or passing up a better return elsewhere.
Activate every quarter — even if the categories do not look useful
Activating takes only a minute, and there is no downside to doing so. A category that initially seems irrelevant could become useful later in the quarter. You might plan an unexpected home repair, buy concert tickets, book a hotel, or discover that a recurring expense qualifies.
Chase typically opens activation on the 15th day of the month before a new quarter begins (e.g., March 15, June 15, September 15, and December 15). You can activate online, through the Chase app or an activation email, by phone, or at a Chase branch. If you activate after the quarter starts but before the deadline, Chase applies the bonus retroactively to eligible purchases from earlier in the quarter.
However, do not rely on your memory or assume activation carries forward. You must register each eligible card account every quarter. Our quarterly Chase Freedom categories post lists the current activation deadline and walks through the process.
Start with purchases you already plan to make
Earning 5X is valuable, but it does not make an unnecessary purchase worthwhile. Before changing your spending, list the expenses already on your calendar for the next three months. Depending on the categories, this might include:
- Groceries, gas, electric vehicle charging, and restaurant purchases.
- Internet, cable, phone, and streaming bills.
- Gym dues, spa appointments, or pet care.
- Travel bookings, event tickets, or charitable donations.
- Home improvement projects, holiday shopping, or other planned large purchases.
Also compare the Freedom card's return with what your other cards would earn. Moving a purchase from a 2X card to a Freedom card earning 5X adds 3 points per $1 — a worthwhile improvement, but not a reason to accept a higher price, lose valuable purchase protections, or pay a processing fee.
Shift timing when it is practical
Rotating categories reward a little advance planning. If a purchase can wait until a matching category begins — or be completed before one ends — shifting the transaction date may make sense.
You also might be able to prepay a recurring expense. For example, a fitness club may let you pay several months of dues while gym memberships are a bonus category. Some internet providers, streaming services, and retailers also allow advance payments or account credits.
Check the merchant's refund policy and your own budget before prepaying. Saving 4 extra points per $1 is not worth locking up money you may need or paying for a service you may not use.
Understand how the merchant codes
Chase generally determines eligibility from the merchant category code assigned by the merchant or its payment processor — not from the specific item you buy. A supermarket purchase usually codes as grocery even if your cart contains household goods, while food purchased from a cafe inside a hotel or department store might not code as dining.
Buying directly from the merchant is usually the safest approach. Purchases processed through third-party payment accounts, mobile card readers, digital wallets, installment-payment services, travel agencies, or other intermediaries may not retain the expected merchant category.
Category definitions and exclusions can change each time a category returns. Check Chase's terms for the current quarter before making a large purchase, especially if your strategy depends on a particular merchant qualifying.
Use gift cards selectively — and only for planned spending
Gift cards can help move a future purchase into the current quarter, but this strategy needs restraint. If a qualifying grocery store or home improvement retailer sells a merchant-specific gift card for a business you use regularly, buying one for a known upcoming expense may be reasonable.
However, do not assume every gift-card purchase will qualify. Chase has excluded gift cards from some merchant-specific categories, particularly when another company fulfills the purchase. Open-loop prepaid cards also may be treated differently from retailer gift cards. Check the category terms, avoid buying more than you can comfortably use, and remember that gift cards provide fewer protections than paying the merchant directly with a credit card.
Take advantage when rotating and permanent categories overlap
This is one of the most valuable — and easiest to overlook — Freedom Flex features. The quarterly benefit adds 4X points to the card's base 1X. The card's permanent dining and drugstore bonuses add another 2X, while eligible Chase Travel℠ purchases add another 4X.
When Chase selects one of those categories for a quarter, the bonuses can stack as follows:
- Dining or drugstores: 1X base + 2X permanent category bonus + 4X quarterly bonus = 7X total.
- Chase Travel: 1X base + 4X permanent category bonus + 4X quarterly bonus = 9X total.
These elevated totals apply only when Chase includes an overlapping category and the purchase meets the terms of both bonuses. The original Freedom Card does not offer the Freedom Flex‘s permanent dining, drugstore, and Chase Travel earning rates, so it generally earns 5X in the same situations.

Layer card rewards with other savings
A 5X category can be the starting point rather than the entire return. Depending on the purchase, you may be able to combine it with:
- Chase Offers: Add an eligible merchant offer to your card before paying. Chase Offers generally provide a statement credit separately from the points earned on the purchase, although each offer has its own terms.
- Online shopping portals: Start with a shopping portal when the merchant is eligible, then pay with your Freedom card. The portal rewards and card rewards may stack.
- Merchant
: Earn store points, hotel points, airline miles, or other merchant rewards on top of the card's earnings.loyalty programs - Coupons and sales: A lower purchase price is usually more valuable than a small difference in rewards.
Be cautious when a stacking method changes who processes the payment. A third-party checkout or installment provider could prevent the transaction from coding in the expected quarterly category.
Track the $1,500 limit
Chase shows category earnings in your Ultimate Rewards activity and on your billing statement. Since the quarterly promotion adds 4 points per $1, maxing out the category produces 6,000 additional bonus points, plus the 1,500 base points.
If you have multiple Freedom cards, track each account separately. Once an account reaches its cap, switch to another activated Freedom card or to the best card for that type of purchase. Remember that returns can reduce your qualifying spending and the points earned.
How To Maximize Common Chase Freedom Bonus Categories
Chase can introduce new categories or individual merchants at any time, so there is no universal strategy for every quarter. Still, many categories have appeared repeatedly. Here is how to approach the most common ones.
Grocery stores
For many households, grocery stores are among the easiest categories to use organically. Put your normal supermarket spending on the Freedom card, and consider moving a planned pantry restock or household-goods purchase into the quarter.
Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs often are excluded from the grocery category, even when they sell groceries. Grocery delivery also may code based on the delivery service rather than the underlying store. Check the current terms instead of assuming that a previous year's exclusions still apply.
A merchant-specific gift card purchased at a qualifying supermarket may help cover an upcoming expense, but buy only cards you know you will use and retain the receipt.

Gas stations and electric vehicle charging
Gas-station categories generally cover fuel paid for at the pump or inside a station. Merchants that do not specialize in automotive gasoline — such as truck stops, marinas, oil distributors, and home-heating companies — may be excluded.
For electric vehicle charging, the merchant must process the purchase using an eligible electric vehicle charging code. Residential electricity, charging equipment, repairs, and parking-facility charges generally do not qualify just because they relate to charging a vehicle.
Fuel and charging alone may not get every cardholder close to the cap. Focus on normal transportation needs rather than buying extra products at a station solely for the points.
Amazon, PayPal, mobile wallets, and select online merchants
Online categories can be especially flexible because they apply across a broad range of purchases. Set the Freedom card as your preferred payment method when the category begins, then remove it or switch cards after the quarter ends or you reach the cap.
The fine print matters:
- Amazon: Eligible services and affiliated merchants can vary. Whole Foods Market has been included in some Amazon quarters, but do not assume it always will be.
- PayPal: The purchase generally must be processed through PayPal. Person-to-person payments and transactions through services such as Xoom may be excluded. If a purchase qualifies for both PayPal and another rotating category, it still earns only one 4X quarterly bonus — not 9X.
- Mobile wallets: Make sure the Freedom card is selected in the eligible wallet. The merchant also must support a qualifying wallet transaction.
- Select merchants: Pay directly through the named merchant and watch for exclusions involving affiliates, sister brands, gift cards, installment providers, and third-party cash-back platforms.
Restaurants and food delivery
Restaurant categories typically include sit-down restaurants, fast-food restaurants, takeout, and eligible delivery services. Food and drink purchases inside hotels, casinos, stadiums, theme parks, grocery stores, and department stores may not qualify if the location does not process the charge as a restaurant.
When dining is a rotating category, the Freedom Flex‘s permanent dining bonus can bring the total return to 7X on eligible purchases. This is an excellent quarter to make the card your default for dining — no complicated strategy required.
Wholesale clubs
Wholesale clubs can make it easy to use a large portion of the quarterly allowance on groceries, household supplies, tires, appliances, and other planned purchases. However, card acceptance matters.
The Freedom Flex is a
Gas sold by a wholesale club is often excluded from the wholesale-club category unless Chase separately lists gas stations.
Department stores, home improvement stores, and named retailers
These categories are most useful when they line up with a planned project or seasonal shopping. You might time an appliance purchase, home repair, furniture order, or holiday shopping trip for the relevant quarter.
Do not stretch a category label too far. Supercenters, discount stores, specialty retailers, and online marketplaces may not count as department stores. Likewise, a retailer's sister brands or purchases processed by an outside financing provider may be excluded from a merchant-specific category.
For expensive purchases, compare the Freedom card's purchase protection and extended warranty with the benefits on other cards before choosing 5X over stronger coverage.
Travel, hotels, transit, and entertainment
Travel-related quarters can create strong earning opportunities, but each category has different boundaries:
- Chase Travel: Pay through Chase Travel with the Freedom Flex to earn as much as 9X when it is also a rotating category. Compare the portal price with booking directly, and consider whether a hotel booking through a third party will forfeit elite benefits or hotel points.
- Hotels: A hotel category may require booking directly with a hotel or motel. Purchases through travel agencies, tour operators, discount travel sites, and vacation packages may not qualify.
- Public transit: Eligible merchants may include passenger trains, buses, ferries, tolls, and parking facilities. Airlines, car rentals, rideshares, bike rentals, and similar services may be excluded unless Chase lists them separately.
- Live entertainment: Concerts, sporting events, museums, zoos, amusement parks, and ticket agencies may qualify. Movie theaters, bowling alleys, casinos, nightclubs, hotel concierges, and excursions sold as part of a travel package may not.
Paying directly with the card also may provide protections you would not receive when buying a ticket or reservation with a gift card.
Internet, phone, streaming, fitness, and self-care
Recurring-bill categories are ideal for moving autopay to the Freedom card for three months. If the provider accepts advance payments without a fee, you also may be able to prepay part of a future bill or membership.
Pay the service provider directly whenever possible. Equipment purchases, app-store subscriptions, bundled services, and third-party billing can code differently from the service itself. Set a reminder to reconsider your payment method after the quarter ends.
Charitable donations
Recent Freedom calendars have included specific charities rather than charitable giving as a broad category. To qualify, you may need to donate through the organization's official website or another designated channel. Local chapters, fundraising platforms, and payments processed by a third party may not use the required merchant code.
Only donate to organizations you genuinely want to support. Earning 5X should not drive the decision to give.
What Chase Freedom Category History Can Tell Us
Chase does not publish a calendar for the full year in advance, and past categories do not guarantee what will return. Still, the complete Chase Freedom category history offers a few useful lessons:
- Everyday categories return frequently. Gas stations, grocery stores, restaurants, and PayPal have appeared repeatedly over the years.
- Categories often follow seasonal spending. Grocery and fitness categories have appeared early in the year, gas and entertainment during warmer months, and PayPal, department stores, and major retailers around the holidays.
- Recent calendars have become more varied. Chase has added specific travel companies, retailers, charities, and personal-care categories alongside traditional everyday spending.
- Overlapping categories can be particularly valuable. Dining and Chase Travel quarters can unlock 7X or 9X earning on the Freedom Flex.
Use the historical chart as a planning aid, not a prediction. Chase has changed its category mix over time and can introduce a category it has never offered before.

How To Activate Chase Freedom Quarterly Categories
Chase requires activation every quarter. The simplest option is to visit the Chase bonus activation page and follow the prompts. You can also activate through Chase's website or mobile app, from an email reminder, by calling the number on the back of your card, or at a Chase branch.
Keep these rules in mind:
- Activate each account separately. Register every eligible Freedom Flex and Freedom Card account you plan to use.
- Watch the deadline. Chase closes activation on the 14th day of the final month in the quarter.
- Late activation can still count. If you register after the quarter begins but before the deadline, Chase applies the bonus retroactively to eligible purchases from earlier in the quarter.
- Do not wait until the quarter's final day to spend. The merchant must submit the charge to Chase by the last day of the quarter. A pending transaction submitted later may miss the bonus.
Mistakes To Avoid With Chase Freedom 5X Categories
Even experienced cardholders can miss points by overlooking one of the program's rules. Watch out for these common mistakes:
- Forgetting to activate. Holding the card is not enough; activation is required every quarter.
- Treating $1,500 as a limit for each category. It is one combined spending cap across the quarter's categories on each account.
- Assuming the item determines the category. The merchant's coding and the payment processor usually control whether a purchase qualifies.
- Expecting two rotating categories to stack. A purchase that fits two quarterly categories still receives only one 4X quarterly bonus. The 7X and 9X opportunities arise when a rotating category overlaps with the Freedom Flex‘s permanent categories.
- Waiting too close to quarter-end. The charge must be submitted by the merchant before the quarter closes.
- Using the wrong Freedom card. Network acceptance can matter — most notably at U.S. Costco warehouses, which accept the original Freedom's Visa network but not the Freedom Flex's Mastercard network for ordinary credit card purchases.
- Continuing after reaching the cap. Once the quarterly bonus is exhausted, move the next purchase to another eligible Freedom account or a card offering a better ongoing return.
- Carrying a balance to earn rewards. Interest charges can quickly outweigh the value of 5X points. Pay the statement balance in full whenever possible.
Make Freedom Rewards More Valuable With a Premium Chase Card
On its own, a Freedom card's points are worth 1 cent each when redeemed for cash back. That makes a fully maximized quarter worth $75 and four fully maximized quarters worth $300 per card.
However, Chase lets you combine Ultimate Rewards points between eligible cards. If you or an eligible household member also holds a premium card — such as the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card, Chase Sapphire Reserve®, or Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card — you can move your Freedom points to that account.
Doing so unlocks transfers to Chase's airline and hotel partners. A strong transfer-partner redemption can deliver more than 1 cent per point, although the value depends on the award you book. In the right situation, the 30,000 points earned from a year of maximized Freedom categories can be worth significantly more than $300.
Bottom Line
The Chase Freedom rotating categories reward organization more than complicated maneuvering. Activate every eligible card, review the exact terms, start with spending already in your budget, and track the $1,500 combined cap. Then look for sensible opportunities to shift timing, prepay a known expense, or stack the quarterly bonus with the Freedom Flex‘s permanent categories and other discounts.
You will not max out every quarter naturally — and that is fine. The best strategy is not to force $1,500 in spending. It is to collect 5X points whenever the categories overlap with purchases you already need to make, then use those points as effectively as possible.
