Should You Buy Choice Points?
At AwardWallet, we don't generally recommend buying points and miles speculatively. Most loyalty programs sell points at a price point that makes it difficult to receive outsized value. You're generally better off holding onto your cash.
However, there are exceptions to this rule. The first is when you only need a few more points to make a redemption, and you can't transfer points into the program. Buying points can make sense here since it's one of the fastest (and easiest) ways to top off your account balance.
When Does It Make Sense to Buy Choice Points?
In some of our previous posts about Choice Hotels, we've alluded to the fact that Choice points can be especially valuable for hotels overseas — specifically in areas with limited chain hotel options. This could also pair nicely with Choice Sweet Spot Rewards.
With that in mind, here are the two main situations where buying Choice points could be worthwhile:
- When buying points is cheaper than paying cash. Compare the hotel’s nightly cash rate to the points rate. Multiply the number of points required by 0.62¢ each (the cheapest effective cost of points during a 40% discount promotion). If the result is lower than the cash price, you’ll save money by buying points and redeeming them.
- When you need to top off your account for a specific redemption. Even if you’re only short a few thousand points, topping off your balance can be cheaper than paying cash for one or more nights. This is especially true at higher-end hotels or during peak dates when nightly cash rates are inflated.

JT, if I were traveling more, burning down my points, I probably would also buy points outright when deal is best ever such as this one. Over the years, thru both heavy travel and rarely traveling periods of my life, kept adding more ways to earn more points and reduce travel costs and improve travel experience, without increasing organic spending – and always earning more points than using each year. To be fair to your point, I prioritize use of card travel credits (requiring cash purchase) before using points, and over time moved to “use credit card whenever possible” policy – including if transaction fee charged, which can also be viewed as a form of buying points.
Only time I have bought points was small amount for promo or to reset expiration date. Almost broke that rule on a Hyatt best ever buy points promo December 2024. With devaluations since then glad I did not. This Choice promo is the most tempting since then . . . but passing, keeping my dont buy points rule intact.

I was lucky and got a targeted 50% off as a platinum choice member, only needed 20k points bought them for $103, booked Bolivar Rome ( member cash rate was $233)

F6 went from 12K to 40K a month ago.
Other hotels across Strawberry/Nordic Choice have mostly doubled. Hotel Haven went from 15k to 30k.

Hi Kay, the answer is no. If you had a Citi Premier, your spouse could send points to you, then you could transfer points to your own Choice account. However, your spouse can’t send points to your Choice account.
