Citi ThankYou® Rewards has added a new rule limiting transfers between members to 100,000 ThankYou® Points per calendar year. Citi has, for as long as long as I can remember, had the best transfer policy of the big four transferable currencies, allowing members to transfer unlimited points between accounts, with the only condition being that the points would expire if not used within 90 days.

The changes don’t affect transfers between cards for an individual, or transfers to travel partners, just points transferred between member accounts identified as Points Sharing by Citi, limiting transfers to 100,000 ThankYou Points per calendar year. The change brings Citi further into line with competing rewards programs Chase Ultimate Rewards, which only allows transfers between members of the same household, and Amex Membership Rewards which limits point transfers of travel partners to yourself or those that are authorized users on your card account.

According to the Help section at ThankYou.com:

The total number of points a member can share is 100,000 points in a given calendar year and the total number of points a member can receive from other members is 100,000 Points in a given calendar year.

This is the second round of adverse changes ThankYou Rewards members have had to digest in recent months. Confirmed in August we learned that the Citi Prestige® Card was losing Admirals Club® Access, Complimentary International Golf, and the minimum redeemable value on flights using points earned from the Prestige Card was dropping to 1.25c per point. That is the same value that can be redeemed by holders of the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card (Rates & Fees) through the Chase Travel Portal, a card with an annual fee of just $95.

Final Thoughts

While we don’t like to see negative changes to any program, this one will only affect a small percentage of Citi members. And the reality is, even at 100,000 ThankYou Points per calendar year, the transfer policy is still the most generous of the four transferable points currencies.
