Spirit Airlines is making changes to the benefits Free Spirit members get. But, unlike many other changes this year in different loyalty programs, Spirit's changes are for the better. These new benefits make it easier to earn and redeem points and improve the in-flight experience. Here are the details of these changes.
New Benefits for Free Spirit Members
Spirit Airlines just announced two new benefits for Free Spirit members, and both are great news.
Free Wi-Fi streaming for Gold members
Spirit was once known for very slow in-flight Wi-Fi from ground-based providers. Since 2022, the new SES-17 satellite has provided a high-speed connection to passengers, which Spirit claims is the fastest among U.S. carriers. However, unlike Delta, Alaska, and United soon, Spirit does not offer free Wi-Fi for passengers.
Passengers can purchase browsing or streaming Wi-Fi, with Spirit claiming that streaming Wi-Fi is 20x faster. Browsing packages start at $5.99 per leg, and streaming packages start at $7.99 per leg. Again, that's per segment, so you could end up paying over $30 for a one-way trip. Or you can pay for a Go Big fare — which now includes streaming Wi-Fi.
According to the Spirit website, most planes have SES-17 high-speed Wi-Fi. Only some of the new A319s are excluded. If you are unable to connect, you can request a refund. If your plans change, you can use your Wi-Fi voucher anytime within 12 months after purchase.
Now, Free Spirit Gold members get free streaming Wi-Fi as a regular benefit, subject to availability. Spirit has been increasing benefits for Gold members, such as adding alcoholic beverages to the range of complimentary drinks and access to Priority Checkin at more than 20 airports.
No redemption fees
As of August 14, 2024, Spirit silently dropped its award redemption fees. That means members no longer have to pay $50 when booking an award flight within 28 days of departure. Government taxes and fees, minimally $5.60, still apply to all flights.
Our Take
It's refreshing to see an airline loyalty program making positive changes. High-speed streaming Wi-Fi for Gold members is an excellent benefit, and we're glad to see the close-in redemption fee eliminated.
