The Most Valuable Card for Redeeming Ultimate Rewards Points
We’ve made no secret of how valuable we think Ultimate Rewards cards can be for points and miles fans. Ultimate Rewards points transfer to 14 different airline and hotel partners, including Hyatt, United, Air Canada, Singapore Airlines, and British Airways.
Transferring points to partners can potentially get you the most value for your points. However, it’s not the only way to extract massive value from Ultimate Rewards points. Sapphire Reserve cardholders can get up to 2¢ per point of value from Ultimate Rewards when redeeming through Chase's new Points Boost redemption option.
That’s up to 100% more value than simply cashing out your points. And it’s a higher value than the Points Boost redemption rates on the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card, which only return up to 1.75 cents per point (depending on your specific redemption). There's also the option to use Pay Yourself Back if the rotating categories and rates work for you.
You can also combine points earned across their entire portfolio of Ultimate Rewards cards into a single account. That makes it much easier to amass lots of points in your account for a redemption.
Chase Sapphire Reserve® Application Restrictions
Chase applies two different restrictions on applications for the Sapphire Reserve. The first is a well-known but unpublished rule known as the 5/24 policy. Essentially, if you’ve been approved for five or more credit cards (from any bank) in the past 24 months, it is highly unlikely you’ll be approved for the Sapphire Reserve.
The second rule states that you can’t get a Sapphire Reserve if you currently hold a Sapphire card or — in a new restriction — have previously held this card:
“The new cardmember bonus may not be available to you if you currently have any other personal Sapphire cards open, previously held this card or received a new cardmember bonus for this card. We may also consider the number of cards you have opened and closed, as well as other factors in determining your bonus eligibility.”
Not sure if you qualify? Chase now displays an eligibility pop-up during the application process. If you aren’t eligible for the bonus, you’ll see an alert and can choose to cancel your application — avoiding a ding on your credit report. This makes it risk-free to fill out an application even if you’re unsure about your bonus eligibility.
