That difference is narrowing: As of October 22, Amex cardholders can book Airbnb stays through Amex Travel and earn up to 5 points per dollar on prepaid bookings, plus additional perks on premium cards.
Here’s what you should know about this partnership between American Express and Airbnb, and what it means for Amex cardmembers.
Earn Amex Points on Prepaid Airbnb Bookings

Use the Amex Lodging Credit for Airbnb Luxe Bookings
Amex is expanding its hotel credit to cover eligible Airbnb Luxe bookings — and renaming it the Lodging Credit to reflect the broader options.
U.S. consumer Platinum Card® and Business Platinum Card cardmembers can receive up to $600 in statement credits each calendar year — split into up to $300 from January through June and another up to $300 from July through December.
Previously limited to prepaid Fine Hotels + Resorts® (FHR) and The Hotel Collection (THC) bookings, the credit now also applies to prepaid Airbnb Luxe stays of at least two nights booked through AmexTravel.com or the Amex Travel App.
Airbnb Luxe is a collection of premium private homes selected by Airbnb for their quality, design, and setting. These properties could appeal to families or groups looking for more space and privacy while putting their Platinum-branded card benefits to use.
Keep in mind that this credit is shared across FHR, THC, and Airbnb Luxe bookings. If you’ve already used your full $300 credit for the current half of the year, booking a Luxe stay won’t unlock another lodging credit.
Earn a $250 Airbnb Experiences credit
Furthermore, Amex Platinum-branded cardholders who book an eligible Airbnb Luxe stay will earn an additional statement credit of up to $250 toward Airbnb Experiences through the remainder of the calendar year.
Note that Airbnb Experience bookings that direct you to a third-party partner platform to purchase are not eligible for the statement credit.
As with the renamed Amex Lodging Credit, you simply need to make an eligible purchase to trigger the credit; you do not need to complete the activity by the booking date. So if you book a prepaid Airbnb Luxe for 2027 in November 2026 using your Platinum Card®, you could also book an eligible Airbnb Experience for 2027 by December 31, 2026, to receive the Airbnb Experiences credit for this year.
No Amex Point Redemptions for Airbnb Stays
Unfortunately, cardholders can't redeem Amex points for Airbnb stays. While booking through a credit card travel portal is rarely the most valuable way to use your rewards, it's still disappointing that cardholders can't use a mix of cash and points or an overabundance of points to offset the cost of an Airbnb booking through Amex Travel.
Should You Book Airbnb Stays Through Amex Travel?
Amex Membership Rewards are one of the most valuable points in the award travel ecosystem. In recent AwardWallet user redemptions, users have gotten an average of 2.04¢ per point.
Platinum Card® cardholders who love Airbnbs and also value Amex points come out way ahead with this new partnership. A prepaid $5,000 Airbnb for a family reunion could yield 25,000 Amex points — worth over $500 — to pad your rewards stash for future travel.
If you don't have an Platinum Card® or Business Platinum Card, booking Airbnbs through Amex Travel makes less sense since you only earn 2 points per dollar.
If you have a non-Amex travel credit card that earns at least 3 points per dollar on Airbnb, you'll earn more booking directly through Airbnb, especially if you can make that purchase through a shopping portal for additional earnings.
