U.S. airlines are always competing for profitable customers. Elite status matches are one of their favorite tools for poaching frequent flyers from rivals, and United Airlines is no exception. The MileagePlus elite status match challenge lets you temporarily match your status from another airline to United Premier status. From there, you can lock in that status through January 2028 by meeting a handful of challenge requirements, which are often much easier than earning Premier status the traditional way.

While it's technically open for applications year-round, now is the best time to take advantage of it. Through October 15, 2026, Delta SkyMiles and American Airlines AAdvantage® members can status match to MileagePlus elite status with reduced requirements. However, if you don't hold Delta or American elite status, the standard status match is still on the table.

Let’s break down all the details.

Limited-time Challenge for AAdvantage and SkyMiles Elite Members

It seems United has a small feud with Delta and American Airlines over in-flight Wi-Fi providers. As a result, United launched a limited-time status match separate from the standard offer, allowing Delta Medallion and AAdvantage elite members to match to United elite status and maintain it with reduced requirements.

This offer runs through October 15, 2026. Claiming this status match offers 90 days of United MileagePlus elite status instead of the usual 120 days. During those 90 days, you must complete additional requirements to extend the status through January 31, 2028.

Instead of completing flights and earning miles, MileagePlus members will only need to purchase eligible tickets totaling a specified amount within 90 days of applying for the status match. Which status you get and how much money you must spend depends on your existing elite status with Delta or American Airlines:

  • AA Gold and Delta Silver Medallion: Claim United Premier Silver and extend for $1,500
  • AA Platinum and Delta Gold Medallion: Claim United Premier Gold and extend for $3,000
  • AA Platinum Pro and Delta Platinum Medallion: Claim United Premier Platinum and extend for $4,500
  • AA Executive Platinum, AA Concierge Key, Delta Diamond Medallion, and Delta 360: Claim United Premier 1K and extend for $7,000

This promotion is running concurrently with the normal status match program. However, you can enroll in both programs simultaneously, but the criteria (PQFs and PQPs vs. amount spent) and qualification times differ and are tracked independently. Normally, members can apply for a status match only once every 3 years, but this offer is a special exemption that waives the rule.

If you're interested, register for this status match by October 15 and complete the required spending within 90 days. Other than the different requirements, the rest of the information is the same as United's ongoing status match program.

After submitting the required matching documentation, you'll receive the corresponding United Premier status for 120 days — but only after completing an “activating flight” within 90 days. An activating flight must be operated by United or United Express and earn Premier qualifying credits.

An “Activating Flight” is a flight operated by United or United Express® that is completed within 90 days after the documentation that you submit for this offer is approved and the flight is posted to the member’s MileagePlus account. Flights on tickets that do not earn Premier qualifying credits do not qualify for meeting the requirements of this offer.

United MileagePlus award flights flown on United earn PQPs, so award flights should count as an Activating Flight.

If you’ve already flown with United or United Express within 30 days before requesting the status match, you can ask for it to count as your activating flight when you submit your application.

How to extend your MileagePlus elite status past the trial period

To keep your matched Premier status beyond the initial 120-day trial, you’ll need to meet some specific travel requirements:

  • Premier Silver: Complete 5 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) and earn 1,700 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP).
  • Premier Gold: Complete 10 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) and earn 3,400 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP).
  • Premier Platinum: Complete 15 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) and earn 5,000 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP).
  • Premier 1K: Complete 20 Premier Qualifying Flights (PQF) and earn 7,500 Premier Qualifying Points (PQP).

Note that PQP can be earned on flights operated by United or United Express and/or from “purchases made with an eligible United Chase credit card within the Challenge Period.” Here's how United credit cards earn PQPs.

It's possible — but unlikely — that the bonus PQPs earned as part of the following United credit card welcome bonuses will count toward this requirement:

You can also only extend the Premier status level you matched. For example, if you matched to Premier Gold, you cannot leverage this challenge to qualify for Platinum or 1K status. You’ll need to meet United’s standard Premier qualification requirements to unlock a higher status.

When you match your status to United matters

United offers two different lengths of Premier status extensions based on when you complete the challenge requirements. If you match between now and December 31, 2026, and complete the challenge requirements, your matched Premier status will be valid through January 2028.

That means now is the ideal time to request a status match.

By waiting until the second half of the year, you can maximize the length of your matched Premier status while still enjoying the same benefits during the challenge.

How to request a United status match

To request a status match, navigate to United's dedicated webpage for the MileagePlus Premier status match. Once there, you'll have to sign in and fill out a form that includes:

  • United MileagePlus account number
  • Valid email address registered on your MileagePlus account
  • Digital copy of your membership card from the matching airline (with your name, elite status, frequent flyer number, frequent flyer program name, and status expiration date)

Once submitted, United may take up to 14 business days to respond and upgrade your account. Hopefully, your results arrive far sooner than that, though.

United Status Match Key Terms

  • Status challenges are unavailable to members who have completed a status match or received a status exception within the last three years.
  • Trial or temporary statuses aren't eligible for a MileagePlus Premier status match.
  • Members won't receive Premier membership materials and may not have access to all reciprocal Star Alliance partner status benefits during the 120 days, including Star Alliance lounge access.
  • If a member fails to meet the status challenge requirements, the matched status will expire, and they may return to a lower status tier or general member status.
  • PQF and PQP requirements during the challenge period must be earned via United or United Express flights and/or on eligible credit card spending.

Bottom Line

If you have SkyMiles or AAdvantage elite status, you can register for the limited-time challenge by October 15, get MileagePlus elite status for 90 days, and then extend your status through January 31, 2028, after completing spending requirements during those 90 days.

If not, United's standard status match program lets eligible travelers enjoy United Premier elite status for 120 days, with the opportunity to extend it by completing a status challenge. It's a great option for frequent flyers looking to switch airlines. Just keep in mind that United generally limits members to one status match challenge every three years, so it's worth having a plan for how you'll make the most of your elite benefits before applying.

That said, you should consider how much value you’ll get from MileagePlus elite status. Several United credit cards offer similar perks to Premier elite status. So, applying for a co-branded credit card might offer the same benefits and savings you value—without the flying requirements.
