Telecommunication servicesWhat are Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) and why are they important?
Merchant Category Codes (MCCs) are a way for credit card networks to identify different types of merchants. Based on the type of business, a merchant is assigned a category code, which is how credit card companies know that something “codes as travel” or “is a restaurant”.
The MCC of a merchant is defined by the network of cards (Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover in the U.S.). Typically, merchants receive the same coding with Visa and Mastercard, however, vendors are sometimes coded differently with American Express.
When such coding differences happen, a transaction with a merchant may code as “Bakery” with Visa/Mastercard and not receive any bonus points but may code as “Restaurant” with American Express and receive bonus points if that particular card offers a bonus multiplier at restaurants.
AwardWallet currently uses data gathered across American Express, Mastercard, and Visa cards issued by Chase, Citibank, and American Express to perform this analysis. We fully expect there to be an occasional anomaly where such coding conflicts occur and are working to point out when this occurs.
