One of the largest U.S.-based airlines, American Airlines serves over 350 destinations worldwide. It's also a member of the massive Oneworld Alliance, which expands its reach to 925 destinations through 15 airline partners. AAdvantage® members can use American miles to book award flights on both AA and partner flights — both of which can provide excellent value.
In this article, we'll discuss booking award flights through the AAdvantage program and how to redeem your miles for the best value.
How American Airlines Prices Awards
In 2023, American Airlines adopted dynamic award pricing for flights on American Airlines-operated flights. Despite this, the program still publishes award charts for both AA flights and partner awards — although American notes these are estimated starting values. The good news is that many awards, both for AA and partners, still price according to these charts.
The number of miles needed to book an AA flight ultimately depends on the demand. Here is the published American Airlines award chart, but again, these prices are “starting at” amounts:

How often these seats are available at the lowest price depends on the route, the time of year, and the demand. For example, this search for a flight from New York to Des Moines, Iowa, returned results ranging from 7,500 miles to 20,000 miles for one way in economy.
According to the chart, this route starts at 7,500 miles. Sometimes, you'll find that rate. Sometimes, it's far higher — or lower.
Finding the Best AA Deals
There used to be a tool through American Airlines called the AAdvantage Miles Finder Map. The page still exists, but the tool no longer appears to function as a true interactive map. Instead, it currently loads more like a standard award search tool, requiring specific origin, destination, and date inputs.
For flexible award searches, you may have better luck using third-party tools like Seats.aero or PointsYeah.

American Airlines Partner Award Chart
A major advantage of airline partnerships and alliances is that you can usually book awards using the miles or points of either airline's loyalty program. This can result in significant savings if you take advantage of sweet spots in the award charts.
American's AAdvantage program uses region-based award charts that show estimated starting redemption rates for travel on its partner airlines. This includes travel on both Oneworld and nonalliance partners. For travelers flying from the 48 Contiguous U.S. and Canada, those starting rates are shown below:

There are some incredibly valuable redemptions available here. Though it's worth noting these awards are becoming increasingly hard to find via AAdvantage.
You can also get excellent value by booking a business-class seat from the U.S. to Europe for just 57,500 AA miles. This example shows a flight from Chicago to Helsinki on Finnair:
Be careful when booking flights operated by British Airways, as the massive fees and surcharges can negate the value you get from your miles. Notice in this example that Finnair is only charging $5.60 in fees. Generally, British Airways awards carry several hundred dollars in fees for itineraries to and from Europe, as you can see below.
Fiji Airways pricing
Many partner awards still price according to American's published starting rates, but Fiji Airways is a notable exception. Since adopting AAdvantage as its own frequent flyer program in April 2025, award pricing on Fiji Airways has become dynamic. How To Book Award Travel on American Airlines

Step one: Log in
To begin your booking with AAdvantage miles, log in to your AA account. Once signed in, your miles and Loyalty Points balance will appear.
Step two: Search for flights
Search for a flight by entering your departure and arrival cities, dates, and whether you're booking a one-way or round-trip itinerary. Then check the box marked “Redeem miles” and click “Search.”
Step three: Find an itinerary and book
The search results display a week’s worth of award prices across the top of the page, along with a convenient calendar view. Selecting the calendar lets you browse award pricing for an entire month at a time, making it much easier to spot lower-priced redemption opportunities if your travel dates are flexible.
Always be sure to check the fees on partner awards, as some airlines can be very high. When you're satisfied, choose your flight and book it!

Final Thoughts
American Airlines publishes different award charts: one for AA flights and another for partner airlines. Since the charts are priced dynamically, you're really just seeing a list of the minimum miles you will spend on each route.
Some American Airlines awards, such as short-haul domestic flights, can be a good deal if you can find awards at the “starting at” rate. Other times, especially during peak travel times, the points required for a flight are way too high to be valuable. However, many partner awards continue to offer outstanding value, particularly for international business- and first-class travel.
Whether you redeem your miles for a quick domestic getaway or an international premium-cabin adventure, American Airlines AAdvantage miles can still deliver exceptional value and open the door to memorable travel experiences around the world.
