Companion certificates are one of the best perks in travel. If you frequently travel with a friend or family member, the opportunity to book a buy-one-get-one flight can represent fantastic savings. Back in August 2025, Frontier announced a companion certificate challenge for cardholders of the FRONTIER Airlines World Mastercard® — meet a spending requirement and earn up to three companion certificates.
You still have a few more weeks to meet the spending requirement, as the challenge ends on January 31, 2026. However, new information about the companion certificates just came out, including some restrictions and blackout dates.
Here's everything you need to know about earning and using Frontier companion certificates.
How to Earn a Frontier Companion Certificate
If you want to earn a Frontier companion certificate, you need to put all of your day-to-day spending on your Frontier Airlines Mastercard through January 31, 2026. Here's how much you'll need to spend:
- Spend $3,000, receive one companion certificate
- Spend $10,000, receive a second companion certificate and Silver status
- Spend $20,000, receive a third companion certificate and Gold status
If you didn't start the challenge back in August, odds are you'll struggle to spend $20,000 in the next few weeks. However, you certainly have time to spend $3,000 to earn one certificate.
Keep in mind that this challenge isn't your only way to earn companion travel. If you earn 50,000 status points in a calendar year, you'll earn Elite Platinum status, which comes with unlimited companion travel. Although it still requires substantial spending to reach, you have the whole year to get there.
Companion certificates are valid for round-trip travel, and if you earn more than one, you can change your companion each time you fly. You'll just need to pay taxes and fees for the second ticket, which start at $5.60 one-way.

Restrictions to the Frontier Companion Certificate
When this challenge was first announced, Frontier didn't list any blackout dates. Unfortunately, that's no longer the case. Here are the blackout dates for 2026:
- January 1, 3-4, 15-16, 19
- February 12-13, 16
- March 13-15, 20-22, 27-29
- April 3-6, 10-12
- May 21-22, 25
- June 25-28
- July 2-6
- September 3-4, 7
- October 8-9, 11-12
- November 24-25, 28-30
- December 19-24, 26-31
In other words, there are roughly 60 days throughout the year on which you can't use your hard-earned companion certificate. These include almost all federal holidays or long weekends you might have off work.
Your companion will also need to have a Frontier Miles account number, and they must be added at the time of booking within the same ticket. Companion certificates will expire one year from the date of issuance, so if you've earned one through this challenge, you'll need to use it this year or very early in 2027.

Bottom Line
Blackout dates are never fun, and Frontier has just added a slew of them to the terms and conditions for its companion certificate. While this is still a benefit worth exploring, its utility has just decreased substantially. If you're still interested in earning a Frontier companion certificate, you'll need to meet the minimum spending requirement by January 31, 2026.
