The Korean Air SKYPASS program has gotten less attention since it parted ways with Chase Ultimate Rewards as one of its transfer partners long ago. However, while they may be hard to earn, savvy award travelers shouldn't overlook the value of SKYPASS miles. And there are many reasons to love the SKYPASS rewards program, not the least of which includes the number of sweet spots in the Korean Air SKYPASS award chart.

In this post, we'll cover several of the best uses of SKYPASS miles. But before doing so, it's worth mentioning how to earn SKYPASS miles.

How to Earn Korean Air SKYPASS Miles

SKYPASS miles are much harder to accrue than many other loyalty currencies. Ever since Korean Air SKYPASS parted ways with Chase, no major bank currency transfers to SKYPASS. Previously, the best option was transferring Marriott Bonvoy points to SKYPASS, but that ended as well. Now, there are only a few hotel currencies you can transfer to Korean SKYPASS miles, but these are generally at a poor value.

This leaves Korean Air credit cards as the best option for banking some SKYPASS miles.

Korean Air credit cards

The handful of co-branded Korean Air SKYPASS Visa cards issued by U.S. Bank tend to fly under the radar. However, depending on the card and the current welcome offer, you can earn a sizeable sign-up bonus of up to 60,000 bonus miles. The annual fees range from $0 to $450.

The SKYPASS Visa Signature offers the sweet spot in terms of an annual fee and sign-up bonus, with decent earning rates and a couple of other perks. Its annual fee is $99.

Business owners also have the option to open the SKYPASS Visa Signature® Business Card. It has similar perks and carries the same annual fee.

Other than earning points from a SKYPASS credit card or transferring from hotel programs, the only other real way to earn SKYPASS miles is by flying with Korean Air — or its airline partners — and crediting the flight to SKYPASS.

Korean Air SKYPASS Award Chart

As airlines continue to adopt dynamic pricing, award charts are becoming a thing of the past — but thankfully, Korean Air hasn't done away with its charts just yet. Here is the redemption table for Korean Air SKYPASS awards on the carrier's own flights for departures from Korea. Required mileage is for a one-way award:

Things to know before you book a SKYPASS award ticket

Before we jump into the best uses of SKYPASS miles, here are several key things you should keep in mind:

  1. Korean SKYPASS offers award rates at “Peak” and “Off” peak levels. Your travel dates determine which rate applies to a given award booking. Peak dates vary from year to year and by origin/destination. You can check here for the current peak and off-peak calendar. Scroll down to the bottom of the page for the button to display it.
  2. Korean SKYPASS allows one-way award bookings on their flights. However, partner bookings must be a round-trip (Technically, SKYPASS allows one-way redemptions for partner awards — but you have to pay the round-trip price).
  3. Korean SKYPASS has multiple award charts. Korean SKYPASS publishes an award chart for SkyTeam Alliance tickets — of which they are a member — and another for non-SkyTeam partners. The peak and off-peak pricing does not apply to partner award tickets.
  4. Changes and cancellations usually have fees, but it's minimal. International tickets can be refunded for free more than 90 days from departure. Otherwise, you'll be charged a refund fee of just 3,000 SKYPASS miles as long as your ticket hasn't expired.
  5. No-shows incur a penalty. If you no-show a flight, Korean Air will deduct additional miles upon refund.
  6. Korean Air passes along carrier-imposed surcharges. These are the high “fuel surcharges” that many airlines tack onto their award tickets… because they can. This is a bummer but pretty typical with most SkyTeam airlines. The good news is you'll pay a minimal amount in taxes, fees, and surcharges for redemptions on Delta Air Lines. But… Delta premium cabin awards can be hard to find.

Now, let's jump into the sweet spots of Korean Air SKYPASS awards.

The Best Korean Air SKYPASS Sweet Spots

Generally speaking, the harder the miles are to earn, the more they're worth. And, arguably, SKYPASS miles are worth a lot because of the sweet spots you can book. Here are some of our favorites:

Round-trip SkyTeam business-class awards between North America and Europe

For only 80,000 Korean SKYPASS miles, you can book a SkyTeam round-trip business class award between North America and Europe. This rate is an absolute steal!

For perspective, the Air France-KLM Flying Blue — another SkyTeam program — made the points and miles world swoon by lowering business class awards between North America and Europe to just 50,000 miles each way — before hiking the business class cost up to 60,000 miles one-way. Through all of that, Korean Air has continued to offer business class awards for just 80k round-trip.

You'll pay drastically more booking through Delta, who prices many of its own business class award flights at over 200,000 SkyMiles each way (though it is extremely rare for these flights to be made available to partners). Of all the awards we highlight, this is among the best Korean Air SKYPASS awards you can book — provided you can find partner award space.

Round-trip Delta awards between North America and Hawaii

Korean is one of a few airlines that includes Hawaii within the same region as the rest of North America. As a result, their award prices for round-trip awards between North America and Hawaii with SkyTeam partner Delta are exceptional: 25,000 miles in economy class and 45,000 miles in business class/domestic first. Here's an example itinerary from Seattle to Honolulu.

For the above example, Delta charges 60,500 SkyMiles for these exact same flights vs. just 25,000 SKYPASS miles. Delta credit cardholders can get a discount on Delta-operated award flights that brings the price down to 51,425 SkyMiles — which is still more than twice what Korean SKYPASS charges.

The issue with this Korean Airlines sweet spot is finding award space. In economy, it's often doable. But Delta releases almost no business class space to partner airlines. Delta One to Hawaii is one of the best Korean Air SKYPASS awards, but booking it is one of those award travel unicorns. Even economy space from the eastern half of the U.S. can be difficult to find, but it's an award worth pursuing for the value alone.

Korean's award prices for partner award travel between the continental U.S. and Hawaii with partners Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines aren't bad either. You'll pay 30,000 miles in economy class and 60,000 miles in business class/domestic first on Alaska or Hawaiian.

Round-trip SkyTeam business class awards between North America and Africa

Many mileage programs charge around 100,000 miles each way for business class awards between North America and Africa. But, booking through Korean Airlines, travelers only need 120,000 SKYPASS miles for a round-trip award between these two regions. Keep in mind that the same rate applies to travel between North America and the Middle East.

You can find similar value with Flying Blue for select destinations in West Africa. But the SKYPASS rate is practically unbeatable for travel to South Africa and other countries in the southern part of the continent. Given the lack of Delta award space across the pond to Europe, you'll need to look for partners like Air France, KLM, and SAS. You should be able to tack on segments on Kenya Airways to reach additional destinations.

Korean Air first-class awards from North America to Korea, Japan, China, Hong Kong, or Northeast Asia

Korean Airlines offers an excellent first-class product, and you can book it between North America and Korea, Japan, China, or Northeast Asia (Hong Kong, Taipei, and Ulaanbaatar) or vice-versa for only 80,000 miles each way. Many popular rewards programs require more than 100,000 miles for such first-class award itineraries. With Delta, you cannot even book partner first-class awards.

You'll be able to get this rate if you fly during off-peak periods. Peak dates will cost you 50% more miles.

Round-trip SkyTeam business-class awards between Europe and the Middle East

Priced at just 60,000 SKYPASS miles round-trip, this is one of the cheapest ways to fly between these two regions among all frequent flyer programs. This Korean Air sweet spot is definitely the cheapest option among SkyTeam programs. There are nonstop flights from several SkyTeam hubs, such as Amsterdam, Paris, London, and Rome.

Just make sure to check the taxes and fees. This is one place where Korean Air's decision to pass along fuel surcharges can really sting.

Round-trip Delta awards between the U.S. and southern South America

For 110,000 Korean Air miles, you can fly round-trip in Delta One suites between the U.S. and South America. Many routes to northern South America don't generally offer Delta One. But you can expect to find Delta's solid business class on long-haul flights to the southern portion of the continent. Destinations like Rio de Janeiro, Santiago, and Buenos Aires can be booked at a great price compared to what Delta generally charges.

As with business class awards to Hawaii, finding award space is the most difficult aspect here. But it's an amazing deal if you can snag a seat. Remember that Aerolineas Argentinas is a member of the SkyTeam alliance, so if you can find a seat to Buenos Aires, you might have the ability to connect to more remote destinations in Argentina.

Korean Air Prestige Class to Australia via Seoul

During off-peak dates, you'll pay just 97,500 SKYPASS miles to fly in Korean Air Prestige business class between North America and the land down under. This is a fantastic deal. It's not the quickest way to get to Australia, but if you enjoy flying, it's a great way to experience more hours in a premium cabin. I've done this trek once, albeit with Star Alliance member airlines and not with Korean. And although it took an additional 11 hours to get to Sydney, it was a highly enjoyable trip.

Consider adding in a stopover in Seoul — something we cover in the final item in this list. It's a great way to break up the trip and a cool city to experience if you haven't visited.

Los Angeles to Tahiti in Air France Business Class

This route doesn't fall into the pricing table provided above. Korean Air has flights to Tahiti priced separately. You can book Air France business class from Los Angeles to Papeete for just 90,000 SKYPASS miles round-trip. If you live on the West Coast, this is a nice option for getting to a bit of paradise.

North America to Southwest Asia in Business Class

Whether you're flying Korean Air or one of the handful of partners based in Asia, all are a solid deal between North America and Southeast Asia. With Korean Air you'll pay 75,000 miles one-way (150,000 miles round-trip) during off-peak dates. During peak dates, this inflates to 112,500 miles one-way (225,000 miles round-trip).

SkyTeam partners run just 155,000 round-trip in business, so during peak dates, partners like China Airlines or Vietnam Airlines are the better deal. Both these partners tend to release sufficient award space that you can find something that works with a bit of flexibility.

Any awards that include a stopover

Korean Air offers one stopover on award tickets, both on their own awards and on partner awards. This means you can add a complimentary stopover on one-way awards on their flights, which is great if you are interested in visiting Seoul. Once you add in partner flights, you have a lot more flexibility with planning a stopover. You can also work in an open-jaw at your destination region.

Assuming you can take full advantage of these stopover rules, any Korean award that includes at least one stopover is an automatic sweet spot. Visiting two destinations for the price of one is always a great deal!

When Will Korean Air Devalue SKYPASS Miles?

For years, Korean Air announced plans to make significant changes to its SKYPASS program. These were originally slated for 2021, then pushed back to April 2023. Now, they have been delayed indefinitely. There is no recent news regarding when these will roll out.

This is great for fans of the program, as there were some substantial negative changes planned for award redemption. Let's hope they never happen!

Bottom Line

Given some of the great Korean Air SKYPASS awards that offer excellent value, it may be worth picking up one of their credit cards if you're keen on making a redemption. Round-trip business class awards to Europe offer particularly great value compared to other SkyTeam programs. Even if it takes a bit of spending to accrue the 80,000 miles you need, it's such a sweet deal — especially compared to what Delta SkyMiles often charges.

Can you guys update the best way to search for any availability for Sky Team awards? I have 100k miles and I’d like to use them before the 10 years is up! It seems impossible to find anything using the Korean website.

      Ryan Smith says:

Great question. The honest answer is that availability is just hard to find with partners–no way to sugarcoat that. We had months of “no results” when trying to find the screenshots for this post, for example. It just requires a lot of searching or using a tool like ExpertFlyer/Seats.aero/etc. that you can filter to only show partner availability or only show awards using Korean miles.

    Howie,

I know this post is old, and things have probably changed a bit. However, I am sitting on a ton of SkyMiles through Delta and planned to use them for a family trip. I was shocked to see how bad the redemption rate has become since I last redeemed miles. What are my options for maximizing my miles? I had hoped to book a stellar international trip (NZ, Australia, Africa, etc). Can I convert to SkyPass? Any other options? Ugh. I’m so disappointed with Delta right now.

Yes, sadly Delta has really transitioned to a revenue-redemption-style of program. It’s hard to really get outsized value from SkyMiles. Most redemptions are around 1.2 cents each. You can sometimes get a slightly better redemption rate on partner business class award flights. Here’s the Delta award chart that we’ve compiled based on award searches. However, since Delta ditched its award chart, this is subject to change at anytime: https://awardwallet.com/airlines/delta-skymiles/how-many-delta-miles-for-a-flight/

Howie, on the Korean site, assuming I am following instructions correctly, if I request a Business Class seat for a Delta flight from North America to Europe, and the site says there is nothing available, should I call Korean Air and request assistance? Especially if I see the Delta site showing Business Class availability? Thank you.

MV, Delta.com will show flights that are not available to Korean. Only the lowest priced flights (of which there may be none available from Delta) are available for Korean to book.

I would suggest also searching AirFrance.us. If you don’t see it on Korean AND you don’t see it on AirFrance.us, I would be confident that you can’t use Korean miles for it.

The reason for this is the general rule: If a seat is available for one partner to book it is available for all partners to book. So if Air France can book a Delta seat, Korean should be able to as well. Just because a Delta seat is available at Delta.com doesn’t mean Korean or Air France can book it.

      Make sense?

You can, of course, try calling Korean, but remember, just because it says it is available at Delta.com doesn’t mean you can use Korean miles for it.

      Give this a read: https://awardwallet.com/airlines/find-airline-partner-award-availability/

        Howie:
Thank you for suggesting airfrance.us. It worked out great. Please confirm if it is normal to see the exact same itineraries on DL flights costing $300 more in taxes using Korean Skypass miles vs. FlyingBlue miles. If yes, then it is great that Flying Blue is a transfer partner of both Thank You and Chase UR. Please let me know your thoughts.

I an sitting on a bunch of SkyMiles, but Delta’s awards chart to Europe is exorbitant. Is it possible to book these 80,000 miles Korea Air Skypass awards to Europe using SkyMiles? Or convert SkyMiles to Skypass somehow?

    Erika Aresta says:

Hello. I’m currently a delta SkyTeam member. I just lost my gold medallion status 🙁 I’m traveling to Vietnam and back on Korean Business prestige class. I am so sad that I do t get the full bonus or any bonus for that matter for flying business on my delta sky team mileage account.
Do you think since I travel a lot with SkyTeam and I also love delta one products that I should for this trip , switch to a sky pass account instead and earn some miles plus a bonus with Korean air instead of trying to claim delta mileage? Last year I spent 220,000 delta miles to book delta one to Argentina from Hawaii and it has left a very sour taste in my mouth. My only concern is that if I plan to travel to Europe from hawaii via delta , I wo t accumulate proper miles on Korean 🙁 I’m so confused. I don’t know what to do. Get a chase sapphire and earn miles on Korean? Change my mileage on my Korean air flight to Vietnam from hawaii to sky pass from delta?
Ugh !!!! Help please guru !!

For this trip specifically, I’d look at the site wheretocredit.com. It’ll help you identify where you should credit your miles to get the best value. As for going forward, earning Chase Ultimate Rewards is a great program to earn in due to the transferability of the points. Flexibility is key and you get that with Ultimate Rewards.

Wow, very solid redemption rates. Any easy way to accumulate Korean Air miles other than flying?

I see on KoreanAir’s award chart that first class round trip tickets from U.S. to Europe are 100,000 points with SkyTeam airline partners. Is it possible to book these flights as well through KoreanAir? Or only business class?
