IHG One Rewards is offering bonus points to travelers who had their NYC Airbnb stays canceled due to new regulations in the city. Through the end of 2023, IHG One Rewards members can claim 10,000 points with proof of a canceled Airbnb stay in New York City. Here's how to claim your points if you were affected.
10,000 IHG Points for Cancelled NYC Airbnb Stays
On September 5, New York City stepped up the enforcement of laws passed earlier in the year to regulate short-term rentals. In a nutshell, renters need to be on the premises if renting out for less than 30 days and must register with the city.
If hosts won't be there during your stay, they must rent for a minimum of 30 days. Furthermore, only two guests can stay at a time. They must have access to the entire house and not be sleeping in an illegal location (cellar, garage, attic, etc.). Again, these are not new laws but rather the enforcement of existing laws in the city.

Many travelers with canceled NYC Airbnb stays could have their plans in disarray. Since mid-August, guests have been unable to book stays at ineligible properties, but there's still the matter of previously booked stays. If the stay commences before December 1, 2023, there won't be a cancellation. However, Airbnb will cancel and refund stays commencing after December 2, 2023.
If you are one of the travelers with an Airbnb stay in NYC commencing between December 2 and December 31, 2023, you can use the IHG Vacay SOS Program to claim 10,000 IHG points. All you need to do is email your proof of New York City short-term accommodation cancellation to BeAGuestAgain@ihg.com. Proof must show that your booking was canceled by the rental company or host. This offer is only available to the first 100 applicants, unfortunately.
I'm assuming this promotion is only for guests who received an Airbnb cancellation from the host or platform directly. Canceling the stay yourself might make you ineligible to receive the 10,000 bonus points. There is also no mention that you have to use the bonus points on a replacement stay in New York.
Our Take
Airbnb did not announce how many stays in NYC were already booked before they closed the option in August. As such, we don't know if it's dozens, hundreds, or thousands of travelers with a wrench in their vacation plans. If you're one of those travelers, this is certainly a great offer to claim. If you're not already an IHG One Rewards member, you can sign up now (at this page) and still make your claim. Just make sure you're among the first 100 applicants.
Did you have an NYC Airbnb stay booked between December 2 and December 31, 2023? Will you be claiming your 10,000 bonus IHG points?
