Ever daydream about getting an upgrade on your flight? Me too! But without high-level elite status on an airline, escaping the cabin you booked and easing yourself into a business- or first-class seat may feel like an unattainable dream. But if you've got American Airlines AAdvantage miles, it doesn't have to be.
American Airlines lets AAdvantage® members — even those without elite status — upgrade into business or first class using miles. Here's how to do it and how much it costs.
Use AAdvantage Miles for Instant Upgrades
American Airlines previously had a mileage upgrade award chart but got rid of it in 2025. Today, most mileage upgrades come through instant upgrade offers.
If you've booked an American Airlines flight, you've probably seen these offers. Eligible upgrades appear in the app, on the airline's website, or in an email. You can pay with cash or miles, and pricing varies significantly based on a variety of factors that American doesn't publicly disclose.
On domestic flights, instant upgrades typically mean upgrading from Main Cabin to First Class. On international and premium transcontinental routes, this could mean upgrading from Main Cabin to Premium Economy or Flagship Business — or from Premium Economy to Flagship Business.
A few more things to note:
- Your flight must be operated by American Airlines or American Eagle. Instant upgrade offers aren't available on codeshare flights like those marketed by American Airlines and operated by Alaska Airlines, Japan Airlines, etc.
- You must book directly with American.
- Your ticket must be purchased within the U.S.
Example American upgrade with miles offer
Below is an instant upgrade offer I received for an upcoming flight from Boston to New York.
American offered me an upgrade from Main Cabin to First Class for either $69 or 7,600 AAdvantage miles. I found the offer through the airline website, but it was also available in the app for the same price.
There is no cash copay when redeeming miles; the 7,600-mile price includes taxes and fees. Once you confirm the upgrade, you'll select your new seats and immediately be ticketed in the new cabin.
Instant upgrade offers also apply to itineraries with multiple segments. For example, on a Boston–New York–Los Angeles itinerary, American could offer me an upgrade on one segment or both.
It's also possible for an offer to appear in the app but not on the website, and vice versa. If you don't see an instant upgrade on either platform, one isn't available at that time.
When is an American Airlines Instant Upgrade Worth It?
Given that I fly this route a lot, I've seen a wide range of upgrade offers over time. I've received offers as low as about $45, or about 4,500 AAdvantage miles, while others have come in well over $150 or 15,000 AAdvantage miles. On such a short flight between Boston and New York, those higher upgrade costs can be difficult to justify.
Back to my example from earlier, a first-class award ticket would cost 20,500 AAdvantage miles. Since a first-class ticket currently sells for $184 on this route, I'd probably pay cash and save those miles for a more valuable redemption.
The instant upgrade, on the other hand, would bring my total cost to $118 plus 7,600 AAdvantage miles, since I'd already paid $118 for my Main Cabin ticket. Still not the best use considering the sweet spots of AAdvantage miles, but it sounds much better than outright paying 20,500 miles for this short flight.
Instant upgrades can also make sense on connecting itineraries — if you're willing to upgrade one segment but don't mind staying in Main Cabin on the other.
Passengers without elite status or a co-branded credit card may also find value in an upgrade if the cost is similar to what they'd otherwise pay for checked bags. Domestic first class includes two complimentary checked bags, so paying for an upgrade could provide more overall value than spending $45 for a first checked bag and $55 for a second.

How To Top Off Your AAdvantage Account
If you're a few thousand miles short of accepting an upgrade offer, one of the easiest ways to top off your AAdvantage account is by transferring Citi ThankYou® Points to American Airlines.
Eligible Citi cardholders can transfer ThankYou Points to AAdvantage, giving members a simple way to generate the miles needed for an upgrade without buying miles directly from American. This can be especially useful if an upgrade offer appears in your account and you don't quite have enough miles to cover it.
For example, if American offers you an upgrade for 7,600 AAdvantage miles and you only have 5,000 miles in your account, a transfer from Citi ThankYou Rewards could help bridge the gap.
That said, it's generally best to transfer points only when you have a specific redemption in mind. Transfers to airline programs are typically irreversible, and American's upgrade pricing can change or disappear. Before moving points, confirm that the upgrade offer is still available and that you're comfortable redeeming miles at that rate.

Bottom Line
American Airlines mileage upgrades usually aren't the best way to maximize miles. In many cases, paying cash for the upgrade — or even booking the better cabin outright — may be the better option.
But mileage upgrades can still be a flexible option for travelers with a large stash of AAdvantage miles. Just remember that upgrade pricing can vary significantly from day to day, so it's worth comparing all of your options before accepting an offer.
