But you don't need to be an AvGeek to care about which aircraft type you fly on. As the onboard product can vary between aircraft, let's break down these routes by aircraft type.
Airbus A321T
One of the most unique aircraft configurations flying the U.S. skies is the American Airlines “A321T” aircraft. Unlike its other Airbus A321 aircraft — which have 190 seats — the A321T has just 102 seats, including 30 lie-flat business and true first-class seats.
The first five rows of the plane consist of just ten lie-flat Flagship First Class seats — arranged with just one seat on either side of the single aisle.

As if that wasn't enough premium seats, American Airlines installed another 20 lay-flat Flagship Business Class seats across the next five rows — arranged in a 2-2 configuration.

That leaves the back half of the aircraft with 72 economy seats — half of which are extra legroom “Main Cabin Extra” seats.
In November 2025, American Airlines is flying this unique aircraft on five round-trip cross-country routes between:
- Boston (BOS) and Los Angeles (LAX)
- New York Kennedy (JFK) and Las Vegas (LAS)
- New York Kennedy (JFK) and Los Angeles (LAX)
- New York Kennedy (JFK) and San Francisco (SFO)
- New York Kennedy (JFK) and Orange County (SNA)

Here are the exact flights that are operating in November 2025 using the A321T, according to American Airlines' schedule:

Boeing 777-300ER (77W)
American Airlines' true “Flagship” aircraft is its Boeing 777-300ER. On international flights, this aircraft operates with four different cabins: economy, premium economy, Flagship Business class, and Flagship First class.
On domestic routes, the options are condensed to economy and (domestic) first class. Passengers who book early enough may be able to select one of the eight Flagship First Class seats in rows 1 and 2.

If you can't snag one of the first-class seats, the business-class seats in rows 3-15 are excellent too.

On shorter flights (e.g., Miami to New York), you won't get any of the amenities you would get on long-haul flights — such as the Casper bedding, noise-canceling headphones, and other amenities found in the picture above. That said, you will get some of these amenities on transcontinental flights (e.g., Miami to Los Angeles) and on flights from Dallas/Fort Worth to Hawaii — when those flights operate.
In November 2025, American Airlines is flying daily between Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) and Miami (MIA), as well as six one-off flights:
- Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) to Los Angeles (LAX) on November 29-30
- New York (JFK) to Miami (MIA) on November 30
- Los Angeles (LAX) to Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) on November 29-30

Best Ways To Book American Airlines Lay-Flat Seats With Miles
American Airlines AAdvantage®
It's a good idea to start your search with American Airlines. AAdvantage uses dynamic award pricing for award flights on American Airlines. So, you may be able to book some of these flights for pretty cheap using AAdvantage miles. However, AAdvantage may charge a premium for nonstop flights — particularly on these nice aircraft.
The best option that we can find during November 2025 is from Charlotte (CLT) to Miami (MIA) for 20,500 AAdvantage miles. Surprisingly, American Airlines is pricing these lie-flat flights at the same rate as recliner-seat options on some days:

If you need more AAdvantage miles, you can now transfer Citi ThankYou Points to American Airlines!
- For a limited time, earn 100,000 bonus Points after spending $6,000 in the first 3 months of account opening.

Alaska Mileage Plan
For shorter American Airlines flights, your cheapest mileage option might very well be booking through Alaska Mileage Plan — particularly after a recent British Airways partner devaluation and Qatar Airways partner devaluation.
One of the best Alaska sweet spots is booking American Airlines flights under 700 miles in distance. That's just long enough to cover the route between Charlotte (CLT) and Miami (MIA). You'll only need to pay just 9,000 miles for domestic first class!

The trouble with this sweet spot is how hard it is to accumulate Mileage Plan miles on the ground. This makes transferring Bilt Rewards points to Alaska, earning miles through the Atmos™ Rewards Ascent Visa Signature® card, and transferring Amex points to HawaiianMiles and then from HawaiianMiles to Alaska critical to taking advantage of this sweet spot.

- Earn unlimited 3 miles for every $1 spent on eligible Alaska Airlines purchases
- Earn unlimited 2 miles for every $1 spent on eligible gas, EV charging stations, cable, streaming services and local transit (including ride share) purchases
- Earn unlimited 1 mile for every $1 spent on all other eligible purchases
Chase Ultimate Rewards
The cash rates for business class aren't cheap. But, using Chase Ultimate Rewards to book a cash flight through the Chase Travel Portal could be the best way to snag one of these lie-flat seats. Just do the math to ensure you're getting the most use out of your Chase Ultimate Rewards points.

Final Thoughts
Trying out a lay-flat seat when flying domestically is always nice, and American Airlines offers some of the best options. If you're traveling this month, look out for these internationally configured and specialty aircraft when booking flights. And make sure to consider all of the ways — miles, points, and cash — that you can use to book these tickets.

You may have noticed no love for Houston. So for you guys flying out of IAH, the Alaska back door is sweet. Got RT first class IAH to DCA for 30K points on Alaska which was a nice surprise. Considering this is a 3.5 hour flight very good value.
In early August I booked 2 business class seats on AA 255 on the A321T JFK-LAX for mid-March 2026 for 35K each. Award price skyrocketed the next day to 80K each and now it’s 105K, Sure, if you wanted to take AA 171 or AA 1, you could get awards for 28K or 39K respecitively, but the flight times are 6AM or 7AM – no thank you. Very happy with the deal we got and will continur to monitor in case award price drops.
JT, a suggestion to also include the A321Ts on the transcon routes configured with Flagship First and Business. While not widebodies, they’re certainly lie flat.
Appreciate that you put these pieces together for AA and Delta One – super helpful in trip planning. Hope you get around to United too!
Thanks Jason! Good suggestion on the A321Ts. I forget that not everyone knows which routes those operate on. I’ll include that in the next update – and I’ll try to set up a United post in the next few months.
How can I book a flight from Buenos Aires to Miami with AAdvantage?
Diego, you can search at aa.com and click on the button “redeem miles.” Once you get results for 1 day, there’s an option to view a calendar of 30 days to search for cheaper flights.
As you’ve been following these wide body routes have you ever seen them add one back after they’ve removed it? Or is it usually gone for good?
Routes certainly ebb and flow. MIA-LAX is a good example of this. This route was devoid of widebodies for a bit there, but now it’s back to a daily 777.
Their business class on international flights is superb. It would be nice to take advantage of true business class on domestic flights as well.
I can only find Airbus A321neo from DFW – HNL.
I confirmed that AA is indeed operating either a 777 or 787 daily from DFW-HNL. However, it looks like American Airlines isn’t selling business class seats from DFW-HNL on certain dates. Not sure if they are sold out or if AA is holding back empty seats for a particular reason.
Looks like the CLT to LAX and back is getting phased out. Can’t see any flights after March 25. I was so hoping to take advantage on my September trip. 😩
AA flies direct SEA-PHL(A320) and SEA-CTL (A321)
Any info on these routes?
Hi,
This is a great resource. Is there any chance AA will continue to fly the widebody from PHL to LAX permanently? It’s so much nicer than the neo 321 which IMO is way too small for a six hour flight
Totally agreed. And yet AA will be putting A321s on longer and longer flights with the rollout of A321neos. We can hope that PHL-LAX continues to offer a widebody option – especially as AA gets more widebody aircraft from Boeing.
JT, do you have a similar article for United? I fly out of ORD.
Not yet, but I hope to be able to expand this series to Delta and United.
How can I book a flight from Philadelphia to Miami in first class with lay down seats
First of all, you can only do that on certain dates. I see options on February 16-17, 19-24, and March 1. In this post, I highlight many of the booking options that you have for these flights.
Any idea when we will see the 777 updates for past March 2023? Thanks so much for these breakdowns!
You’re welcome! My data source only makes it possible to research and post one month at a time. However, you can manually search routes using a tool like ITA Matrix. We are working on an AwardWallet post about how to use ITA Matrix. In the meantime, here’s my post about it for NerdWallet: https://www.nerdwallet.com/article/travel/how-to-use-ita-matrix
Whoever thought forward/backward-facing seats are a good idea?
I dunno, but it’s a really frustrating product to fly!
Hi, saved this link fir domestic wide body flights on AA. Any chance you have future months? It would give me more options to fly 777s and 787s. Thx
I will be updating this post in the next few days for November. With flight schedules changing so much, you can really only rely on the airline sticking to its schedule within a couple months of departure.
Hey – how can we see where they will be flying the 777-300 planes in February and March 2023? Is there a website or do you have that information? Thanks for any help!
I’d recommend using ITA Matrix to manually research routes. You can limit flights to those operated by AA and operated by a “77W”. Then, you’ll have to enter a variety of origin and destination airports to find routes and dates that operate using the aircraft. I’m only seeing the 77W operating between JFK-MIA through the end of Feb. Then, DFW-MIA on March 1, DFW-LAX on March 24, DFW-LAX-MIA on March 25, and MIA-JFK on March 26.
What a badass article, thanks JT! I fly these routes consistently, will you be updating this list monthly? You mention this only applies in September.
Thank you Luke! Yes, I update this article each month.
thanks JT! Looking forward to updates for October!
American Airlines always on the vanguard. Wonderful!
It looks like the party is comming to an end… which makes your monthly updates that more valuable.
Thanks for keeping the information up to date! Keep it up!
Thanks for the suggestion.
I have 4 systemwide upgrades that will expire soon, and I have been trying for quite some time to find a flight where I could use these well–meaning at least a 3-5 hour flight into first class (not an AA 321). Or even business class internationally or longer route domestically–i just want a bigger bang for my award, if that makes sense.
Seems like they make it now where you really can’t use it well.
John: I feel your pain. Between my wife and me, we had 11 systemwides that were going to expire 7/31. Thankfully a bunch of upgrade space opened up on LAX-HND when AA added more frequencies on that route. So, we’ve booked a couple of roundtrips to Japan! Space also opened up for CLT-MUC and reverse, so we have a Germany trip planned for October. Hope you can find a way to use yours!
Just wondering if you know if AA will be flying the 787 to CUN or if Delta on the A330 to CUN this coming fall 2022 (sept through December) or winter 2023 (January through April). Thanks
I’m not seeing either of those in the schedule right now unfortunately.
Great article JT! Wondering if you know whether the DFW-LIM routes on 32Q aircraft offer flatbeds? THANKS!
Unfortunately AA doesn’t have lie-flats on its 32Q aircraft. Only the A321T aircraft have lie-flat business- and first-class seats – but they only fly those transcon.
The A321Ts also operate BOS-JFK and JFK-BOS. The J seats are sold as MCE, so it’s a great way to get a flat bed on an economy ticket
Super interesting – I didn’t even know that AA would use their international planes for some of these much shorter routes. Also, interesting to see that flights on the Dallas-Hawaii route offers these same benefits… time to start looking! Thanks for sharing.
Hey JT, very informative article. How could i know when to book a flight with a lie-flat seat between Miami and Dallas (originally I’m booking Miami-Morelia, México) back and forth? For example i found just one like that but it was only on July 1 2022 🤷🏻♂️
Yeah, MIA-DFW on the 777-200 ended on July 1. The DFW-MIA route is still operated using a 787-8, but not MIA-DFW right now.
Could I suggest you add the distance of the route in your tables? It would make it easier to judge the cost according to the various programs and would also be useful for earning (on BA at least in terms of tier points). Thanks!
Thanks for the suggestion. I’ll see if I can work that into my next update.
Hey, JT will you publish the same article for these type of domestic flights for July?
I will. I update this post each month with the latest domestic widebody flight offerings. However, my data source usually doesn’t update until the beginning of the month. Otherwise, it would be quite a manual process.
Much thanks – looking forward to your email.
July’s list of routes is in this updated post!
I wonder if this can work to fly to Alaska as well
AA has offered lie-flat seats to Alaska during the summer in past years. However, AA is using A321neo aircraft on these routes this summer – as it needs all of the widebody aircraft it can on long-haul flights.
Would appreciate info re LAX JFK AA first flagship flight and the best way to get them, please.
Hoping to go from JFK to MCO or FRA to VCE or TRS June 2023.
Thank you!
Hola buenas tardes
gracias
mario branchesi
i am interested in lie flat first class tickets to miami intl airport
thanks
Nice write up! I’ve been planning on draining my AA miles as I no longer fly them for work, so it’s nice to see where premium offerings are as I chip away at the balance.
Hello! Do these routes change month to month? I am trying to book a trip to Hawaii on these nice seats. Thank you!
Unfortunately, these can change from month-to-month. Your best bet for flying in lie-flat business class seats to Hawaii is to fly through Dallas (or Chicago or Charlotte if they bring those routes back). Phoenix can sometimes also have widebodies. But LAX never does.
Such awesome concise information, thank you. I appreciate the time that was put in to providing this information. Travel goals for sure.
Congratulations!
Always American trying to improve the ir services.
The most useful information I saw on this website. Spectacular, thanks!
Thanks so much for this information. With my AA miles now valid into 2022 I will finally fly AA´s Business Class.
So how do you pull a list like this for other dates, say from ita matrix?
In ITA Matrix, enter “o:aa” in the Routing Codes box and “aircraft t:787 t:777” in the Extension Codes box. To find the cheapest dates, either search by month or choose the “Plus/minus 2 days” option.
Thanks so much for this information. With my AA miles now valid into 2022 I will finally fly AA´s Business Class.
This IS good news indeed. Before New Year’s Eve I plan to visit friends in Washington, D.C. and then our son in San Francisco, flying from Spain. Too many miles for my tired bones. Will contact again my travel agent to take advantage of this AwardWallet tip!
A huge pat on the back for the amount of work you guys put into this article. I’m sure digging through and sorting all of this wasn’t easy. Very informative, and something to keep in mind if you fly out of these airports frequently.
Don’t think you really need the lie flat on a domestic flight unless it was a red-eye coast to coast and you need a few hours of sleep
I can attest to the comfort of the seats on the LAX-MIA route. Unfortunately pandemic discounts seem to have dried up these days.
Very good news!
I will be traveling from MIA to LAX next year.
I hope I can enjoy the first class services.
Thanks for the information.
Good news. Hope AA miles tickets would be widely offered on routes to and from Argentina. It’s sometimes quite difficult to find any at reasonable values.
Excellent article, now with my AA miles valid until March, I will finally fly AA´s Business Class
Good news for domestic flights, new routes will be welcome, especially those routes with several flight hours.
Unfortunately I don’t see any of these aircraft on the routes I normally fly. Especially since I have a bunch of red-eyes in my future, the lie flat seats would have been very welcome. I guess I can always hope for January it might change in my favor.
Thanks JT, I have become dependent on this article every month. I fly these lie flats regularly just for the experience and the destination is just icing. Any way to get these out a few days earlier? thanks
I do not know if to take advantage of the miles within the USA, it is better to use it for long international flights
Are good news! . my business trips are being reactivated and I’m probably traveling all over the USA very soon. It is good to know that I will have truly comfortable seats for domestic trips!
Now that covid is getting under control, it will be good to use my airline miles for one of these flights. The seats on some of these flights look very comfortable.
Any articles like this for United? I discovered there’s one IAD to SFO flight a day on a new 787 so that was nice. Got to sit in Premium Economy and only paid for an E+ upgrade. 🙂
For me, American has always had the best business class producto in the US
Excellent! I would like to try those seats sometime, more considering these times of pandemic where social distance is very important to me.
This has been wonderful! I took advantage of upgrading on ORD-PHX on a 787 last month. Brings back positive memories of years ago when widebodies were flying all over the US.
Wish AAdvantage pricing wasn’t dynamic, so I had a target to aim for. I’d rather not use my Avios on AA; I use them on BA with my 241s.
I was once (must have been 2018 or 19) very surprised, when I arrived at the gate for my flight from ORD to DFW and saw a 787 standing there.
When I walked into business class I had a pretty big smile on my face….
The seat layout is kind of “interesting”, especially when you are sitting backwards but the seat offers great comfort and privacy.
If you have the chance to experience this product on one of these flights then definitely go for it!
That is some really useful information as we plan to finally get back to the U.S. in late November from the U.K. and some of the longer internal flights will hopefully be a lot more comfortable. Thank you!
Great news. Use long AA flights several times, but not these. I will take them into account for my DFW – HNL route
Mr. Genter: Thanks both here and on ThePointsGuy you always have some great ideas thoughts. While there look like some great opportunities, AA has burned me more than once, even before the Pandemic canceling flights, changing aircraft (and seating), etc. Is there a simple quick way to check (knowing nothing is certain) the reliability of an AA flight not being canceled and/or having substituted planes?
Thanks for being a long-time reader! AA includes some reliability numbers when you search for flights on its website. I also use ExpertFlyer to search for reliability data, set up schedule change alerts, set up aircraft change alerts, and set up “Y0” alerts (less than 1 economy seat for sale) to see when AA cancels a flight.
What a wonderful post!
There is a chance to I take advantage of that as I am planning a trip from Miami to NYC.
It is not a long route, but I think it will worth it!
Without such detailed routing information, it would be really hard to find good award redemption’s at AA. Thank you for this article and the information.
In my opinion Dallas – Hawaii and Miami Los Angeles are the best considering the length of the flight.
Of course it is also important the price or the cost in miles in case of a redemption flight.
Getting a lie flat seat on a domestic flight is always a nice bonus. This is a particularly good use of British Airways avios.
Have a few main cabin extra upgrades from their anniversary contest. Would be great to get lie flat upgrades!
This is great news, transcontinental should always have a flat option!
It is definitely nice to get one of these seats however you dont really need these for short haul flights.
This is very useful. Especially listing all the flights having this configuration
Nothing from SFO/SJC 🙁
I’ll fly fron Mía to Lax this months. Hope I qualify and get lucky.
I would rather save points and fly coach.
That MIA-JFK route looks good with the 777 in first class
Hopefully this scenario will continue after October. It would be great to travel to Honolulu in First.
Nice airplanes. Thanks for the info . Will be interesting to check those .
Thank You for detailed info .
Is service in Business service the same with COVID-19 protocol? I think today is a waste of milles… just an opinion.
I can only speak to United post-COVID in comparing to economy but you do get food which is a big plus for me. Not sure what it was like pre-COVID. I CAN say that I flew United Polaris at the onset of COVID and it was some of the worst food I’d had in my life. Every previous flight I’d flown in economy all had better food than the crap they served in Polaris that day. I took photos and complained but of course United offered nothing and said my transportation was fulfilled so nothing more needed to be done. Unfortunately I’m stuck being a United flyer living at a huge United hub.
Good, I’ve got a handfu of upgrade certs and I’ve just moved to MIA
Excellent news!
I frequently use some of the routes that it appears in this article.
I can’t wait to book my next flight and take advantage of the first class services.
Flying in comfort to Hawaii sounds wonderful!
I think, there will be B777-300ER flights to Hawaii for the remainder of 2021.
These would definitely be nice snags especially for the Hawaii routes.
Sadly, nothing for IAD and very little for CLT, which is a common connection.
These lie flat seats are great but they dont really do much for me on short haul flights. You cant really enjoy them if your flights are 3 hours or less.
Thank you for the info…as we are traveling to Hawaii this summer with the family w will be watching this closely.
Wish I could fly in lie-flat seats. Southwest is just so darn affordable and practical for where I live and how I travel.
For long domestic flights it’s even more valuable in my opinion because the flight require less miles usually.
Another consideration I usually do is if the flight is in the day or in the night.
Too bad no Denver flights included. It would be sweet to try these.
This is great to know. My employer has grounded me for now, but when the time comes, I’m going to use this info!
Such a seats are only worthy on long flights.
I’ve flown American for years on most of my international flights. I’ve always found their accommodations to be top-tier and the cabin stewards to be most responsive to any reasonable request. During this time of travel restrictions, wearing of masks, longer boarding times, please treat the flight attendants with respect. We all need to keep in mind that they did not make these rules, but they are on the front lines to impose them. It makes a difficult job even more stressful.
Undoubtedly the flight dfw – hnl is the most worthwhile. I’ll try to find a flight. Thanks
I guess this is a good time to try international business class seats on a domestic flight while there is still not much international travel. Still I would only use this for flights longer than 4 hours to actually enjoy this.
Great to know you can get a proper lie flat seat flying domestically.
Anytime you can get on a premium aircraft and gain a humane seat, is wonderful. Hoping that the lower costs to fly these improved birds along with the increase in loads, generates more of these flights. Of course we understand that once International borders reopen it will be goodbye but in the meantime…Thanks for the article.
soon will test Boeing 777-300ER, looking forward
Would be nice on those Dallas to HI flights. I’ll stick with Econ for shorter CONUS flights.
Great list.
Etihad miles can be used to book AA J / F awards as well.
Hi
It’s my first time in the blog.
I’d like to know if I can buy miles using any special promotion and then use these new miles with old miles to buy a ticket.
Thanks
Great article thank you for sharing, AA is my favorite business seat to travel in so far. I really like the space you get . Thanks!
Looking forward to checking out some of these seats. It’s a great idea to enhance the experience on internal American flights. ?? ?✈️
Very nice overview, I hope the amount of flights will stay this high until late autumn, when I’m planning my trip to the US. Crossing fingers that the COVID restrictions will allow it.
There will be many wide-body flights throughout the US in 2021.
Excelent News¡ I,m travelling to USA soon and this infomation is usefull for me. A lot of information usually not so easy to find.
Flying comfortable in a long flight is great, I guess it is not worthy for 2/3hours flights, but who am I to judge..
Tenemos muchas millas addvantaje y seguiremos sumando mas . Pronto las usaremos. Gracias por la info.
Do we have any idea what the situation is for these flights beyond July?
IMHO, It is not worth spending a lot of money to book mainly a first or business class seat in order to fly domestically in the US. That only makes sense for coast to coast flights, the ones which last at least 5 hours. Other than that, I think it is not necessary.
With many of these routes being quite short, it doesn’t seem to be a great use of cash or points to angle to fly them. A nice bonus perhaps, but not aspirational.
Always happy to find and fly ‘International’ domestic.
I want to try this on flights to Hawaii. If not flights are just too short to enjoy these first class seats.
I have never flown business class. with these opportunities maybe I can do it
Still never flown first class. Will have to use some upgrades from AA’s anniversary contest!
Great!! MIA – JFK These routes are available now. Thanks
Does anyone have the idea of flying from SJU to HNL on 787 and 777 all the way?
Oooh! That would be fun.
It is cool to fly between MIA and LAS in B777 business class.
Great way to fly to Hawaii in style if you have the miles!
Esos asientos son una gran comodidad… Buen por american
I miss the two seat configuration on Bussines!
My God! I must be the only person who hates these seats! Flown before and detested it. Yes I can understand if you travelling alone what a great seat this would be, but I cherish my downtime with my wife where we both have demanding careers, and when we travel we want to be side by side!
doing an MIA to HNL this fall and I’m seriously considering DOWNGRADING to Premium just so we can sit together.
Am I the ONLY ONE who feels this way??????
I know this article is about domestic, but could you PLEASE tell me if the AA 772s – JFK to Athens have the facing backward seats in Bus as well?
That is awesome, I am going to book a flight to Honolulu, so I am gonna try to choose one of those aircrafts!
Wow that’s a great overview of the seating options! Does this operate the same way during the pandemic? I want to make sure I’m safe while traveling.
This is good news for those of us who do regular internal flights!
Hows the tlv route?
This is valuable information, especially during these tumultuous times. I have had to reschedule or cancel travel several times, and plan to catch up as soon as I can! There are so many places I want to travel to, and American’s business class seat program provides me with varying options and opportunities.
I do like to have a nice comfortable seat these days so would definitely try to bag one of the seats especially in first class. It’s a very rewarding way to use up those miles if you can’t fly internationally.
I love this! That Business and First class seating looks like what I would love to do in my next trip 🙂
Is it worth the extra miles for first class over business class?
It is an excelent news!!
This is excellent, helpful information, especially during these difficult times when plans or scheduled travel are subject to change.
Excelente informacion!!
Excellent information!! I have flown the 787 and you really feel the difference
Great opportunity for those flying only domestically to get to try these seats out.
Oh, was thinking of a Hawaii trip and this would be amazing.
Excellent description and good news for us
Thanks for this! Would love to take a trip to HNL this year and the DFW-HNL route looks good, if I could only get a connecting flight from MCO.
I still prefer the log haul flights of the Asian carriers for business class seats especially Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines.
Nice guide to AA lie flat seats- will be sure to refer to it when I need it in the future!
Sounds like a sweet way to fly from DFW to HNL and back, esp. if you can snag one of the 1st class seats on the 777-300ER….enjoy it while it lasts. Once international travel picks up, these opportunities will vanish quickly.
It seems that Hawaii has gone ALL 777 now.
Wow! That setup looks very comfortable! I’ve always wanted to fly in one of those airplanes, so maybe this is my chance! Thanks for the info Award Wallet! 🙂
I will admit that I once took an earlier flight than was necessary to get into a widebody business class seat. It was pleasant though a short flight. I was hoping that PHX -PHL might get some love as that is a common route for me. But no luck this time.
I definitely booked a flight that was about 12 hours earlier on United to be able to sit in Polaris on a 6 hour domestic flight. That also allowed me both lunch and dinner in the Polaris lounge in SFO. 🙂
Does the aircraft that goes to Buenos Aires include that configurations? Thank you in advance.
I had the opportunity once to fly on lie-flat seats from PHL -> LAS, first time flying first class too; it was a treat! This is some great info and hopefully it can be updated/continued past May. Know it’s kind of crazy with plane schedules at the moment. Local airports are dropping and rescheduling flights often lately.
The first time I ever got to try one of these seats, it was because I got a surprise upgrade on a flight from MIA – LAX. It turned out to be a bit of a cruel trick, because it definitely spoiled me from ever flying in a normal seat again!
The only negative during the experience was that I felt the fully reclined seat was made for a shorter person (I’m 6’2”). Are all lie-flat seats built for a standard height, or is there some variety?
I realize these are all “first world” problems, but figured I’d mention them. 🙂
Yes, the boxed-in lie-flat seats are a challenge for tall people.
MIA – LAX or SEA are the ultimate domestic long-haul flights.:)
Is there a chance these flights will continue beyond may?
They should! However, airline schedules are in such flux that it’s hard to count on airlines now changing the aircraft type for a future flight.
This is great info. I always try to plan for these flights, especially when going transcon. VERY unusual to see the 77W flying domestically, would be great to snag a flight on one.
Excellent! Could I use the 500-milles upgrade coupons?
Sure! Just keep in mind that 500-mile upgrades are subject to availability and prioritized by elite status.
Is service in Business service the same with COVID protocol? I think today is a waste of milles. My opinion.
DFW – HNL is a good flight for this, wish it applied to Maui too though.
I was origianlly scheduled to fly lga-dfw-ogg but a schedule change allowed me to change it to jfk-dfw-ogg for free. scored lie flat on the first leg!
The lie flat seats look pretty nice, with air travel ramping back up it would be nice to see some other west coast routes added for these type of planes. Would love to see some deals for Phoenix, AZ. Can’t wait to fly again soon.
Love flying these proper cabins domestically!
excellent opportunity to take advantage of the miles, I would like to go to Hawaii soon
No love for PHL to PHX. So no lie flat seats for me. The really good thing about these aircraft is that there are many more business class seats. More chance for an upgrade for elites.
I guess there’s not enough international travel, so they’re putting the bigger planes to use domestically until things pick up again? What are the benefits to flying first/business class domestically, other than the increased legroom?
Interesting to see Puerto Rico getting many widebody flights these days. Is there an increase in demand? United also flies widebody planes between EWR and SJU quite regularly.
I just booked F class on ORD-PHX in the 787-8. First week of June.
I would save my miles for the long international flights than waste it on short haul domestic flights.
The thought of a rear facing seat on a plane does not sound very enjoyable! Are they less desirable?
We -as couple- have used the forward and rear facing seats on a Dreamliner of Qatar Airways since you sit next to each other but see the other, you can talk and dine together. In fact it was rather nice. Also, I did not get the uncomfortable feeling as in a train or so to drive backward, probably because you don’t look outside you don’t have that effect.
I had the chance to take one from Miami to LAX after a long international flight and it is one of the most great experiences you can get.
Great opportunity to snag a lie flat seat on a domestic flight – esp, handy on a flight to Hawaii from DFW – until int’l travel returns in earnest, this is one of the silver linings to take advantage of….
So sad to see that the promotion had ended. I hope they bring this back. Having the ability to lay down and relax during such a stressful time as flying during a pandemic is such a luxury!
Shoot! That was my bad for not changing a setting on this post. These routes are available now!
Need to save up some miles to fly one of these routes in first class. American has some of the nicest planes.
It is a real bonus to get a long haul aircraft on a domestic flight. I suppose the downside is that if you expect it and then there is an aircraft change to a non long haul aircraft you can’t really complain about it.
WOW! This looks like a good product for domestic flying. I hope I get a chance to try them out soon.
Hopefully they will do this promotion again and add some routes that depart from West coast locations.
It’s live now! Sorry that there was misleading text at the top of the post for a few hours there.
Very useful, thank you!
Congratulations.
I’d like to seat in those seats soon if Covid allow us to travel more
Did not know that there are so many opportunities out of DFW. Now knowing this information, I would likely take advantage of it when I plan my next trip out of DFW. The only catch is that it will probably be after the covid-19 thing wears off.
AA will hopefully still be flying a lot of widebody flights once COVID winds down. The airline usually needs to do at least some of these flights for aircraft utilization. For example, a 787 might arrive from Sydney at 6am PT and not depart again until that night. So, the airline might run the plane between LAX-DFW during the day.
Fascinating insights with route opportunities. I will be sure to take advantage when I am in the USA next.
Super helpful to have this information all in one place. I was a bit sad to see so few options out of San Francisco / Bay Area, but it makes sense given their route coverage. Will need to save up the points for the next time I’m doing an trip based out of a different city.
I’m guilty as charged! I’ve gone out of my way to fly equipment that I know will be offering premium seating. This article is a great resource. United often has premium seating flights in the US too. Before COVID, they often had a 777 flying between IAH-IAD.
I love that the US 3 are starting to fly long haul aircraft domestically. I hope this sticks post-covid.
Being based at SFO, United usually flew 777s to EWR, DEN, and HNL anyways. I’m sure a couple more routes were thrown in there, but those are for sure true contenders before domestic wide bodies were “newly normal.”
Very useful . This is awesome!
Be great to get insights like this for UK-US business flights once long haul returns. Interesting stuff.
I actually did not like being in the rear-facing business seat, it was a weird experience. Nice to see AA continue to be one of the leading airlines for comfort.
Once the passenger numbers get back to normal, I expect these planes may be taken off the domestic routes and put back to international. Take advantage while you can.
I am planning to a travel to Honolulu for my wedding anniversary, This is a great option and I think is worth to do it on special for special occasions. Thanks
The Iberia Avios paragraph is key to international travellers like me. Should apply to all One World alliance airlines!
Gracias
Oh my goodness, this is so hard to keep track of!
It sure is! We tried to break it down to make it as understandable as possible. But let me know if there’s anything we can do to make it easier for you!
Deals like this make me excited to get back on an airplane once I am vaccinated. Just wish Washington DC airports were also operating these flights!
Yes, when there are not many flights ex IAD and wide-body flights from DCA are practically non existent.
Would love to see some of these on flights to/from Canada
Thank you very much for giving us this information. I’m back travelling and I’m happy to read this article.
Best
Seeing a post like this about First Class really tempts me to get back on the plane. Still not the right time yet, but hopefully soon!
Thank you for this post. Very useful.
This is really great, I would really try one of these flagship domestic flights, but I don’t have any reason to visit MIA right now. I would just advise everyone to be sure they book the correct aircraft type and not accidentally choose to fly an Airbus A320 or something like that.
This is a great opportunity, and the ‘Rona vaccine just became available for me locally, so it’s too soon to start flying again. I’m pretty sure the window for things like this will be open at least until May, when everyone will have been vaccinated, and then we can start the “new” normal in earnest.
I would love to do this but I think that I won’t be. I have a feeling that they will be changing this around. I’ll just have to note the type of aircraft and look at what I am booking to see if it matches. I think that since I am in the middle of the country it’ll be difficult.
Woo a lot of Hawaiian locations.
This is great! I tried once but I was not lucky.
I’ll try again as soon as I can fly again.
I would buy business class tickets from Chicago to Hawaii now if it was not for COVID-19 at all the different restrictions.
When will the LAX – HNL non-stop route return? We need more flights to Honolulu.
AA has 4x LAX-HNL nonstop flights – just not on widebody aircraft. Instead, AA’s using A321s on this route.
This is awesome! I love seeing this! American Airlines is the best airline I have ever fly! I enjoy a lot, feel save all the times and it is on-time every fly.
Thanks for this great article. I usually fly the LAX – AKL route and have always been impressed with the lie flat seats that AA offer on the 787 so for them to be available on so many domestic flights is great!
Glad to see lie flat seats on domestic flights..vast improvement over normal domestic business. Always book lieflat internationally but only have had the pleasure of getting one domestically once… plane change last minute 🙂 Looks like more and more carriers will be including lie flat domestically… applaud them…looking forward to flying again
Had the pleasure of flying in a lie flat on an international flight and it’s totally worth it. Great info in this post! Thanks JT!
I am supposed to fly first class LAX-JFK in March. Fingers crossed no last minute metal change.
Love seeing this. Always great coverage by JT !
Definitely if I had somewhere to travel to at present, cash in some AA points and fly business.
Any business class on AA is decent but the 777W would be my pick. A good experience for North Americans who don’t normally travel outside their own country.
it’s an easy way to enjoy these comfortable premium cabins
All of these amazing deals while so many of us aren’t flying. I hope it leads to at least a little permanent change to the customer’s advantage.
Wow! I’m really impressed this new product looks great. I think I’d like to try it out.
I probably wouldn’t book any of the domestic routes just to sit in these seats but it’s very nice when you are flying anyway and your upgrade clears and you notice that you’re now in a lie-flat seat.
Top tier member upgrades are consolation prizes during these challenging times indeed.
I would like to book business class from O’Hare to Honolulu using my AA miles. With Hawaii constantly changing the rules due to COVID-19, I will take a pass.
Great little niche article! I’ve always wanted to try one of these widebodies on a domestic routing. Although there are always possibility of last minute schedule changes.
But is it worth spending extra points or money to travel business on a short flight?
For some, the experience can definitely be worth the rather marginal price difference that AA is charging on many of these routes.
Excelente Business Class.
Some of these deals are amazing, wow!
Good news for DFW flyers. I’ve flown on 77W and 772, and they were turly impressive!
Very useful resource, thank you for the update.
Wish this was available out of more cities, sounds like a great treat for after quarantine!
This would be a great thing to kick off travel this year after only one flight last year.
Also, any flights to Mexico on these aircraft?
Yes! AA operates flights to Cancun (CUN) from Dallas/Fort Worth (DFW) using a 787-9 and from Philadelphia (PHL) on a 787-8. And over the holidays, AA also flew to Cancun from Chicago (ORD) and New York Kennedy (JFK) using widebody aircraft.
Nothing worthwhile to or from IAD?
Not on American Airlines. But there are plenty of United lie-flat seats flying in and out of DC.
I have stopped booking domestic flights based on the aircraft type in 2020 after several aircraft changes after booking tickets due to COVID-19. Basically, I would book a route with a lie-flat seat, and they the plane would get changed to a smaller aircraft with no lie-flat premium cabin later.
This is a nice article to point out good domestic AA routes for premium seats, but in my experience these days you can’t count on it even after you book.
I understand that frustration myself! Hopefully, these flights won’t be changed as they are within the next few weeks.
Interesting to know but I would still keep my miles and use it for international flights in order to have a longer time to enjoy my ride.
It would be such a treat to travel from MIA to LAX in Flagship First.
