A few days ago, one of the best deals in award travel went live. And many a traveler pounced on the opportunity to book Air France and KLM business class awards from 1,500 Flying Blue miles. Who wouldn't?

Sadly, those award fares were too good to be true. Flying Blue blamed the wildly discounted business class prices on a technical glitch. And with that, the airlines began canceling bookings left and right. If you happen to hold Flying Blue status — Gold or higher — you might have lucked out and not seen your booking axed. Lucky you.

But for those who scrambled to transfer points to Flying Blue and are now left with a balance of miles and no award ticket, what gives? Well, you might be in luck.

According to Flying Blue, affected customers can have those transfers reversed. Here's what we know.

Unprecedented: Reverse Your Transfer To Flying Blue

In virtually every conceivable instance, once you transfer credit card points to a loyalty program, you can't get them back. It's a one-and-done deal. But for those who moved points from various programs over to Flying Blue, it looks like you can be an exception to the rule.

Affected customers posed questions on the Flying Blue FlyerTalk forum about getting their points back, and the head of Flying Blue loyalty, Ben Lipsey, responded with the following advice to contact customer service:

Quote from Flying Blue director: "Yes, feel free to contact our customer service centres via phone or email. We will handle this on a manual basis with our conversion partners (so won't be instantaneous unfortunately, especially given the holidays)."

This is truly unprecedented in the world of points and miles. In the vast majority of transfers, there really is no getting your points back after making a transfer. But in this case, it looks like you can.

If you transferred credit card points to Flying Blue to snag a ticket from Montréal to Lille for 1,500 miles or Athens for 16,500 miles (or a dozen other itinerary combinations) and want your points sent back to your credit card program, reach out to Flying Blue. Call (800) 375-8723 or use chat or email through your account page on the program's website.

Final Thoughts

If you transferred credit card points to book wildly discounted business class award tickets to Europe (and beyond), you can have your transfer reversed. If this situation pertains to you and you don't want to keep your new balance of Flying Blue miles, reach out to Flying Blue to facilitate the reversal.
