A just-extended promotion offers new Bonvoy members 250 bonus Avios when they join by December 31, 2024. We've seen promotions similar to this in the past, although they normally give more Avios than this. Here are the details of this offer and why you might want to earn Avios instead of Bonvoy points.
250 Bonus Avios for New Marriott Bonvoy Members
Marriot is one of the many hotel chains offering bonus points to new members. Currently, members can earn up to 7,500 bonus Bonvoy points when joining and completing two eligible stays within 90 days of enrollment. However, members sometimes can earn other rewards when joining.
Occasionally, Marriott offers bonus Avios instead of points when joining Marriott Bonvoy. Last year, British Airways Executive Club members could earn up to 3,000 bonus Avios by joining Marriott Bonvoy and completing stays. This year, there's no bonus for completing stays, but members can earn Avios just for signing up.
Through December 31, 2024, British Airways Executive Club members will earn 250 bonus Avios when enrolling as a new member using this partnership page. No further steps are required to get your free Avios. The only limitation is you can't already be a Marriott Bonvoy member.

Our Take
We've certainly seen better promotions than this for joining Marriott Bonvoy. Last year, BA Executive Club members could get 3,000 bonus Avios after joining Bonvoy and completing two stays. Currently, Marriott is offering 7,500 bonus Bonvoy points to new members.
However, if you're not planning to stay at many Marriott hotels in the future and prefer to build up your Avios stash instead, this could be the promotion for you. Avios are particularly useful for overseas travelers, as it's the rewards currency of British Airways, Aer Lingus, Iberia, Qatar Airways, and now Finnair. In addition to these airlines, you can use Avios to book flights with any Oneworld alliance airline. 250 Avios isn't a lot, but every little bit helps towards your next flight.
If you prefer Avios redemptions over Marriott Bonvoy points, consider setting your Marriott earning preference to Avios if you haven't already done so. Thereafter, you will receive up to 2 Avios per $1 spent on Marriott stays. British Airways Executive Club members can book flights with as few as 4,750 Avios. Again, it comes down to how you value your points and miles.
