Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia have had a long-standing commercial partnership. While this may come as a surprise, given that Singapore Airlines is a Star Alliance member and Garuda Indonesia belongs to SkyTeam, this partnership is expanding. In short order, the carriers will expand reciprocal benefits for GarudaMiles and KrisFlyer members and increase capacity between Singapore and Indonesia. Earning and redeeming miles will come soon, as well.

Singapore Airlines Expands Partnership With Garuda Indonesia
The relationship between Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia started in 2010 with a codeshare agreement. Over time, this agreement has expanded, coinciding with increased demand between Singapore and Indonesia.
Now, Singapore Airlines attaches its code to Garuda Indonesia flights between Singapore and Denpasar, Jakarta, and Surabaya. Garuda Indonesia codeshares on Singapore Airlines flights from Singapore to/from the following cities:
- Bali
- Jakarta
- Medan
- Surabaya
- Johannesburg
- London (Heathrow)
- Mumbai
A simple codeshare agreement doesn't mean much for frequent flyers by way of earning and redeeming miles. However, this will soon change, as Garuda Indonesia and Singapore Airlines have signaled that reciprocal benefits are coming.
Unfortunately, there are few details on what these reciprocal benefits will look like, other than GarudaMiles and KrisFlyer members gaining the ability to earn and redeem miles on the partner carrier. The press release indicates that other “exclusive benefits” are on the way, but it's anyone's guess how exclusive they'll be.
As the partnership expands, more seats between Indonesia and Singapore will come online. Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia plan to initiate a joint venture agreement shortly, focusing on growing tourism between the two countries and revenue sharing.

We've said it before, and we'll say it again. New opportunities to earn and redeem miles are a good thing. Hopefully, what's coming down the pike between Singapore Airlines and Garuda Indonesia will give us something worth being excited about. In other words, here's to Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer carving out some new sweet spots for Garuda Indonesia flights.
Expanded connectivity between Singapore and Indonesia is a plus, too. And if the teased “exclusive” reciprocal benefits are, in fact, exclusive, using either carrier to travel between the countries might present a great way to fly.
