Avios have quietly become one of the most powerful and flexible currencies in the travel rewards world. Once limited to a handful of British Airways loyalists, seven airlines now use the Avios program: Aer Lingus, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Loganair, Qatar Airways, and Vueling.

The shared currency means you can move Avios instantly between programs, consolidating balances, unlocking better award pricing, or taking advantage of lower taxes and fees. Whether you prefer Qatar Airways’ premium cabins, Iberia’s off-peak business class awards, or British Airways’ vast network, you can earn in one program and redeem in another.

And thanks to the new unified Avios platform, transferring points between these airlines is now faster and easier than ever. Here’s how to use it.

Which Airlines Can You Transfer Avios Between?

While you can eventually get Avios between any of the seven Avios-earning programs, not all transfers can be done directly. To move points between certain programs, you have to move them to one program first before transferring them to their final destination. You can move your Avios to/from British Airways, Iberia, Aer Lingus, Vueling, and Loganair by using the dedicated platform (more on that below).

If you want to transfer to Qatar or Finnair, you'll need to first transfer to British Airways Club and then use the same platform to complete the transfer. If you have a small Avios balance in each of these loyalty programs, the opportunity to combine them to one account can let you leverage your Avios for a more lucrative redemption.

How To Use the New Avios Transfer Platform

There is now a dedicated portal for transferring your Avios between accounts. It's incredibly easy to use — all you need to do is link your accounts and complete the desired transfer. To start, go to the dedicated Avios transfer page.

Select where you want to transfer Avios from and click “next.” You will be redirected to log in to that loyalty account.

Select which loyalty program you want to transfer Avios to. Click “next,” and you'll be redirected to log in to your receiving account. In this case, I'd like to transfer Avios from Iberia to British Airways.

Enter the amount you wish to transfer. There's no minimum, but you can transfer a maximum of 999,999 Avios at a time. So, Avios millionaires will have to make a couple of transfers. Click “transfer,” and you're all set.

Luckily, you'll only need to link your accounts once. Then, when you log in to the Avios website, you can freely transfer Avios between accounts as you wish.

Transfer Avios Between British Airways and Qatar or Finnair

To transfer your Avios between British Airways and Qatar or Finnair, you'll essentially follow the same steps. You'll go to the same Avios transfer page as above, and scroll past the section titled “Where do you want to transfer Avios from?” Then, you'll see the following section, which allows you to transfer Avios between British Airways and Qatar or Finnair.

You'll need to link your accounts if this is the first time you've attempted the transfer through the portal. Then, you can complete the transfer in seconds.

You'll follow the exact same process for Finnair transfers.

Throughout the linking process, you'll notice lots of two-factor authentication. Your initial transfer might be a bit more time-consuming since you're linking all of your accounts, but then you shouldn't have to worry about it again.

Price Arbitrage Between Avios Programs

When Qatar originally joined the Avios program, Qatar modified its award pricing to mostly harmonize with British Airways and eliminate arbitrage options. So, you'll generally pay the same amount of Avios whether you book it via the British Airways or Qatar Airways website.

With that said, you can sometimes find a price arbitrage between programs — especially when one program devalues routes while another program delays a devaluation. Keep in mind that taxes and fees on award redemptions can vary significantly between programs.

For instance, Qatar tends to have lower taxes and fees than the outrageous surcharges BA often levies on award flights. So, even when the Avios price may be the same, there could be a substantial saving on taxes and fees by booking through Qatar Airways Privilege Club. However, make sure to account for the ‘per segment' award booking fee with Privilege Club.

Great Credit Card Transfer Options

The ability to transfer Avios between Aer Lingus, British Airways, Finnair, Iberia, Loganair, Qatar, and Vueling has opened up many opportunities to transfer credit card points between airlines.

For example, British Airways and Iberia are transfer partners of  American Express Membership Rewards, Bilt Rewards, Chase Ultimate Rewards, Capital One Miles, and Wells Fargo Rewards. Qatar isn't a transfer partner of any of those programs, but it's the only Avios-earning program that's a Citi ThankYou transfer partner. Using this tool, you could transfer your ThankYou points to Qatar, then move them to British Airways or Iberia to book a given flight.

Our Take

Avios have evolved from a single-airline loyalty currency into a global points ecosystem that offers flexibility few programs can match. With seamless transfers between seven airlines and multiple transferable point currencies feeding into the system, Avios are now easier to earn, move, and redeem strategically than ever before.

Whether you’re consolidating balances from old accounts, chasing lower redemption surcharges through Qatar, or topping up Iberia for a sweet-spot business class award, the ability to move Avios freely and instantly is a genuine game-changer.

As more airlines and partners join the Avios network, this shared currency is becoming a blueprint for how airline rewards should work — simple, flexible, and rewarding for travelers who know how to use it.

Did you know that if someone else accesses your AwardWallet account, you will see an alert at the bottom of the page? Clicking that alert will show you all the current sessions accessing your account. If you see something that doesn’t make sense, you can log the other sessions out and change your AwardWallet password. my avios on iberia are expiring on 1/31. if i move them to british will that extend their expire date? also trying to do this on an ipad. noticed someone commented that it doesn’t work on all browsers. i’m getting the same msg as others, that my login has expired. appreciate any advise thanks

Can I transfer Avios points from a household account to Iberia Plus ?

You can transfer British Airways Avios that are part of a household account to Iberia. However, the Avios will need to go from one household member’s BA account to their IB account. Unfortunately, you can’t transfer Avios that were contributed to the household account by other members.

Trying to move from BA to Iberia and get Your session has timed out, please log in again ….

I am trying to transfer from BA to Iberia and have no idea what my PIN is. My password is not working in that space

Just checking: Are you entering your Iberia password on that line (not British Airways)? Because my Iberia password is all that’s required in the PIN field 🙂

    Paul Teixeira says:

Thanks. Iberia to Ba worked in chrome finally. Not safari.

    Paul Teixeira says:

At this day May 3 2024, none of this works. Avios.com no longer even allows you to log in. The British and Iberia pages just timeout and don’t let you even login.

      Ryan Smith says:

Hi Paul, we are actively working on updating this post to reflect the end of Avios.com but I can tell you that it’s possible to move Avios between BA and Iberia on the Iberia site and between BA and Qatar on the BA site. The Iberia site also has an option for moving Avios to Vueling & Aer Lingus, but I haven’t personally tested those.

    Dawn O'Malley says:

How do I do this when I don’t have a PIN for Iberia Plus? I have read some comments online and others are having the same issue without ever getting it resolved. Help?

I contacted Iberia Plus support, here is their response:

We would like to inform you that the PIN code that is required when you try to transfer Avios is the same password used to log in to your Iberia Plus Account. (Pin for transferring Avios = Password used to log in to your Iberia Plus Account).

      It seems to work.

    Luke Thompson says:

The only solution for me was to create a 3rd Avios account at AerLingus, and login to that at Avios.com. From there I could easily pull the points from IB, and then push them to BA, thereby combining my IB and BA accounts. This workaround was actually very simple, and the transfers are instant!

    Charles Mitchell says:

I have over 300,000 Avios points on Iberia and I have an account with BA with just 16,000 Avios points. I find the flight I want on BA but not Iberia. So I thought I’d transfer the points, but I cannot.

Following our instructions I get this:

    Iberia Plus
Sorry, you are not eligible to combine your Avios with Iberia Plus. Please see the full Terms and Conditions.

Clicking through gives a long list of T&C changes. The headings for these changes don’t seem to relate to what I’m attempting to do. Any ideas what is the reason I cannot move Avios points?

Typically this issue pops up when the account details don’t match. Make sure both accounts have your same exact full name, date of birth, email, home address, etc. Otherwise, you can try using Avios.com as an intermediary.

This even happens when everything on the accounts match!
What do you mean by creating an Avios.com account? When I go to Avios.com and click on “join”, it only gives options to join one of the partner airline accounts and not creating an Avios.com account!

I’ve been having this same issue, for the past 2 years and no one at either Iberia or BA seems to even care to look into it. Total BS!

    Jose Roberto da Cruz says:

    Wow!

It will really help me, I have a few points and I will try to ship to Qatar,

Thank you so much for the information and in so much detail!

    Thanks, very useful info

    tassojunior says:

I just used Avios.com and transferred points from BA to AL and then AL to Iberia, so it does handle all 3 easily for immediate transfers. BA to Iberia through AL is a 1 minute process.

Ive noticed BA is now showing some AE awards at the AE low level but with very slightly higher fees. But only if you search for Dublin.

Here’s hoping the integration brings down those outrageous BA surcharges some but more likely IB and AL will increase.

btw, AL Dublin/DC is often 13K plus $150 and business at 60k plus $150 is often available, so Dublin is my favorite hopping off point now.
