Your progress toward United Premier status resets every January. But if you fly enough, you'll eventually reach a point where that stops. United's Million Miler program offers lifetime Premier status, beginning with Premier Gold at 1 million flight miles and going all the way up to Global Services at 4 million.
But it's a long road to get there. Lifetime Flight Miles are only earned on paid flights operated by United and United Express, so credit card spending and Star Alliance flights won't help you get there.
United also offers a companion benefit, but the rules are changing in 2027. Here's how the program works, what you'll unlock at each milestone, and how United stacks up against its competitors.
How To Earn United Million Miler Status
Achieving Million Miler status is no small task. Only a small percentage of travelers will ever reach this milestone. But if you’re aiming to join the elite ranks (or just curious about the process), here’s how it works.

What counts toward United Million Miler status
MileagePlus uses three separate currencies, and it can be easy to confuse them:
- Redeemable miles are what you use for award tickets. You earn them based on your fare, your Premier status, and whether you carry a United credit card.
- Premier Qualifying Points and Premier Qualifying Flights (ending 12/31/2026) determine your annual Premier tier. They reset every January 1.
- Lifetime Flight Miles are the only miles that count toward Million Miler status. They're based on the scheduled distance of your flights, not on what you paid.
A 5,000-mile flight credits 5,000 Lifetime Flight Miles whether you bought basic economy or Polaris. Cabin, fare class, and elite bonuses are irrelevant. Unlike PQPs, Lifetime Flight Miles never reset and never expire. You'll earn Lifetime Flight Miles from paid tickets on flights operated by United and United Express, credited to your MileagePlus account.
Here's what doesn't earn Lifetime Flight Miles:
- Award tickets. United lets you earn PQPs (and PQFs through the end of 2026) on some United-operated award bookings, but never Lifetime Flight Miles.
- Flights operated by partner airlines, including Star Alliance carriers and United's joint venture partners, even with a United flight number.
- Spending on United
.credit cards
This basically means that distance is worth everything. One round trip from San Francisco to Singapore will do more for your lifetime total than a dozen short domestic segments in first class.

How To Track Your United Million Miler Progress
Log in at united.com or open the United app, then go to your MileagePlus account page. Under “Your Premier progress,” you'll see your Lifetime Flight Miles total alongside your PQP and PQF progress for the current year.

United Million Miler Status Tiers and Perks
Your United lifetime status level depends on how many Lifetime Flight Miles you accumulate. Lifetime Premier Gold is awarded at 1 million miles, but you can earn up to Lifetime United Global Services at 4 million miles. Here's a look at what you'll get at each level of lifetime status.
| Lifetime Flight Miles | Lifetime Premier Status | Star Alliance Status | What it adds |
| 1 million | Premier Gold | Star Alliance Gold | Two free checked bags, Economy Plus at booking for you and one companion, Group 1 boarding, complimentary upgrades from 48 hours out, companion status benefit |
| 2 million | Premier Platinum | Star Alliance Gold | Three free checked bags, Economy Plus at booking for you and eight companions, 40 PlusPoints a year, higher upgrade priority |
| 3 million | Premier 1K | Star Alliance Gold | Three free checked bags, 280 PlusPoints a year, dedicated 24/7 support line |
| 4 million | Global Services | Star Alliance Gold | United's invitation-only tier: top upgrade priority, dedicated agents, airport escorts on tight connections |
Earning PlusPoints doesn't begin until Premier Platinum, and lifetime elites who reach a new milestone mid-year won't receive their annual allotment until the following January. Lifetime status also doesn't give you a head start on earning a higher annual tier. A lifetime Gold member who wants Platinum still has to meet the annual qualification requirements.
Being a Million Miler also means you'll have Star Alliance Gold status for life, which provides reciprocal benefits on all Star Alliance airlines, such as lounge access.

United Million Miler Companion Benefit
One of the best perks of United Million Miler status is the ability to share your elite status with a designated companion. Each year, Million Milers can choose a spouse, partner, or household member to receive the highest Premier status they’ve earned for that year.
Some rules worth knowing:
- The benefit is annual and will renew automatically. Companions may be changed once per year, and all changes must be in by November 30 to be in for the following year.
- Your companion can't already be another's Million Miler companion. And if they're a Million Miler themselves, they don't get to name a companion of their own. United closed that loophole.
- Companions don't get PlusPoints, even when they're matched to Platinum or 1K.

What changes in 2027
Starting in 2027, companions of 1 Million Milers will receive Premier Gold status and nothing above that, even if the sponsoring member earns a higher tier. The only exception is if the companion qualifies for higher status on their own.
Companions of 2, 3, and 4 Million Milers aren't affected. They'll continue receiving the sponsor's highest earned status. This makes the jump from 1 million to 2 million miles even more valuable.
One thing that isn't changing: Companions traveling on the same reservation as a higher-status Premier member still get some airport benefits from that traveler's tier, just like any Premier member's travel companion.
Is United Million Miler Status Worth It?
The value of Million Miler status depends on how much you fly with United. If you’re already a frequent traveler accumulating miles naturally, lifetime perks like upgrades, extra baggage allowances, and priority services can be incredibly valuable.
The companion benefit is another major perk, particularly for those who regularly travel with a plus one. A spouse who doesn’t fly much but gets Star Alliance Gold, two checked bags, and Economy Plus every year can get significant value from the program. That’s also an argument for pushing from 1 million to 2 million miles, especially with the 2027 companion changes.
However, earning even the base 1-million-mile level requires flying the equivalent of circling the globe 40 times. Only the most dedicated road warriors will meet this threshold, making it an unrealistic goal for casual travelers to chase deliberately.
But the math changes if you're already earning miles organically. Someone with 200,000 lifetime miles probably has no reason to change their travel habits. On the other hand, someone who's accumulated 850,000 miles might consider routing a few upcoming trips through United instead of a partner airline.
One more thing to remember: airlines can change their lifetime programs. United is reducing its companion benefit in 2027, and PlusPoints are moving to dynamic pricing. Lifetime status is a nice reward for loyalty you'd show anyway, but it’s a poor reason to redesign how you travel from scratch.

How Does United Million Miler Compare With Competitors?
All four major U.S. carriers have lifetime elite status, and the milestone ladders get most of the attention. The bigger differences are in what counts toward those milestones and whether you can bring someone along. United offers a path to lifetime Global Services at 4 million miles, but it's also particularly restrictive about what earns credit. Delta's program is more flexible, with eligible award flights and certain partner flights counting toward lifetime status.
| American | Delta | United | Alaska (Atmos) | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| How progress is earned | Flight distance on eligible American-marketed flights and qualifying partner flights, subject to applicable earning rules. | Flight miles flown on Delta and partner-marketed flights, including eligible award tickets | Scheduled distance of paid flights operated by United and United Express only | Miles flown on Alaska and Hawaiian only |
| Do partner flights count? | Yes, at partner base earning rates | Yes | No | No |
| Does Basic Economy count? | No | No | Yes | Yes |
| Key benefits at 1 million miles | Lifetime Gold; priority services and checked baggage, 35,000 bonus miles | Lifetime Gold Medallion; eligible international lounge access and upgrade priority | Premier Gold; eligible lounge access and companion status | Atmos Gold; eligible international lounge access, companion status and four annual upgrade certificates |
| Alliance status at first milestone | Oneworld Ruby: priority check-in and boarding | SkyTeam Elite Plus: eligible international lounge access and priority services | Star Alliance Gold: eligible international lounge access, priority services, and extra baggage | Oneworld Sapphire: eligible international business-class lounge access, priority services, and extra baggage |
| Companion status | None | None | Yes. Annual designation; benefit varies by lifetime mileage tier | Yes. A household member receives the higher of your lifetime or earned status |
| Highest lifetime status milestone | 5 million: Lifetime Executive Platinum | 3 million: Lifetime Diamond Medallion | 4 million: Lifetime Global Services | 3 million: Atmos Titanium |
| Additional Lifetime benefits | Four systemwide upgrades at 2M and each million after | Gift catalog selection and bag tags at each tier; | Annual PlusPoints upgrade benefits at higher lifetime tiers | 20,000 bonus status points annually at 1M; complimentary main-cabin meals, and higher upgrade priority |
Alaska's Million Miler program has the shallowest ladder, capping out at Alaska Titanium at 3 million miles. But the annual status points boost is the most useful ongoing perk any of the four give out, and its companion benefit is arguably better structured than United's, since it always passes along the higher of lifetime or earned status with no tier cap.
Delta also counts eligible award tickets and qualifying partner flights toward Million Miler status, a great benefit for frequent mileage redeemers or those who fly SkyTeam partners.
Bottom Line
United's Million Miler program offers lifetime Premier status, with benefits and perks that you can share with a companion. It’s costlier than competitors — United metal only, paid tickets only, no partner or award credit — but pays back more at the top, including a lifetime path into a tier otherwise invitation-only.
It's a great payoff for long-term commitment if you’re a road warrior who’s loyal to United Airlines. For everybody else, the miles to earn aren’t worth the payoff, and the 2027 companion change is a reminder that lifetime benefits are only as permanent as the airline deems them to be.
