Do you have a big purchase on the horizon — maybe a new TV, camera, or refrigerator? The credit card that earns the most points or miles may not be the best card to swipe at checkout. While it's certainly important to consider how much you'll earn on your purchase, most rewards cards offer non-travel benefits that should weigh into the decision-making process.

A credit card extended warranty can help you keep your purchases protected for longer. Here are the best credit cards for extended warranty coverage.

How Do Extended Warranty Policies Work?

You may be familiar with extended warranties offered by a cashier or salesperson. An extended warranty typically adds between 12 and 24 months to the manufacturer's warranty.

For example, you purchase a new iPhone with Apple's Limited Warranty of just 12 months, and the salesperson asks if you want to purchase AppleCare+, Apple's extended warranty plan, which costs over $100 per year on most new phones. However, if you swipe the right credit card when buying your iPhone, you can receive similar extended warranty coverage to Apple’s pricey AppleCare+ without the extra expense.

The extended warranty coverage offered by your credit card mirrors the manufacturer’s warranty. It will only cover you for the same defects and faults listed in the product’s original warranty documentation. Just charge the full purchase price of the item to your credit card, and retain copies of the manufacturer’s warranty and any merchant or credit card receipts. If there is a covered fault after the manufacturer’s warranty expires, your credit provider could pick up the bill for the item's repair or replacement, or reimburse the purchase price.

Policies differ widely between credit card providers, so reading the guide to benefits specific to your credit card is crucial for determining your level of coverage.

Typical credit card extended warranty exclusions

In your guide to benefits, you'll also see a list of exclusions that's worth reading through before making a purchase.

The list of exclusions differs for each provider, but common exclusions include:

  • Animals, plants, perishables, and consumables
  • Used, antique, collectible, or pre-owned items
  • Boats, cars, aircraft, or any other motorized vehicles (motorbike, truck, tractor, etc.)
  • Computer software
  • Medical equipment
  • Land, buildings, or housing
  • Items purchased for resale, professional, or commercial use
  • Exclusions listed in the original manufacturer warranty
  • Items without a manufacturer’s warranty

Credit Card Issuers Offering Extended Warranty Protection

Unlike purchase protection policies, which apply to items you just purchased, extended warranty benefits are typically most useful several years after purchase. Bilt and Citi claim the top spot, but not without some competition from Amex. Here's a quick overview:

The Best Credit Cards for Extended Warranty Coverage

There are likely dozens of cards from these issuers that offer extended warranty coverage, but we will highlight a few of our favorites. Unfortunately, some card issuers, including Wells Fargo, didn't make this list because they don't currently offer extended warranty coverage on any of their card products.

Best overall: Bilt Palladium Card

The best credit card for extended warranty protection might surprise you. In our eyes, the Bilt Palladium Card (Rates & Fees) takes the top spot. Extended Warranty coverage offered under the Palladium Card doubles a manufacturer's warranty of up to 24 months. If you purchase an additional warranty of up to 24 months, Bilt will still double the original manufacturer's warranty, which means you can be covered up to 72 months, or six years.

Interestingly, the benefits guide doesn't mention an annual maximum, so you could theoretically make multiple claims per year. You will be covered up to the actual purchase amount charged on your card, the actual cost of repair, or the actual cost of replacement, up to $10,000. If you spend a lot of money on something that's built to last, and it doesn't, the Palladium Card has you covered.

A maximum benefit amount and certain restrictions and limitations apply. Please review the Mastercard Guide to Benefits for details.

The Bilt Palladium Card delivers premium value through a mix of strong everyday earning, substantial annual travel credits, and flexible rewards that can be used for both luxury travel and real-life expenses like rent and mortgage payments. With a high-value welcome bonus, Priority Pass access, and generous ongoing credits, it's well-suited for cardholders who want elevated benefits alongside practical redemption options.
  • Earn points on housing payments with no transaction fee
  • Choose to earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spend. Use Bilt Cash to unlock point earnings on rent and mortgage payments with no transaction fee, up to 1X.
  • 2X points on everyday spend
  • $400 Bilt Travel Hotel credit. Applied twice a year, as $200 statement credits, for qualifying Bilt Travel Portal hotel bookings.
  • $200 Bilt Cash (awarded annually). At the end of each calendar year, any Bilt Cash balance over $100 will expire.
  • Welcome bonus (subject to approval): 50,000 Bilt Points + Gold Status after spending $4,000 on everyday purchases in the first 90 days + $300 of Bilt Cash.
  • Priority Pass ($469/year value). See Guide to Benefits.
  • Bilt Point redemptions include airlines, hotels, future rent and mortgage payments, Lyft rides, statement credits, student loan balances, a down payment on a home, and more.
  • Choose to earn 4% back in Bilt Cash on everyday spend. Use Bilt Cash to unlock point earnings on rent and mortgage payments with no transaction fee, up to 1X.
  • 2X points on everyday spend

This is almost identical to Citi's policy, so what makes the Palladium Card take the top spot?

You earn 2X Bilt Points on everyday spending. So, no matter where you make your big purchase from, you'll earn 2X Bilt Points on your transaction. And according to recent AwardWallet user redemptions, Bilt Points are worth roughly 2.11¢ apiece. That means if you need to buy a $5,000 camera, you'll earn 10,000 Bilt Points worth around $208, which is a solid 4.2% return on your spending.

Runner-up: Citi Strata Elite℠ Card

Just like Bilt, Citi will double a manufacturer's warranty of 24 months or less. If you purchase an additional warranty of 24 months or less, Citi will still double the original manufacturer's warranty. That means you could potentially reach up to 72 months or six years of coverage. You'll be covered up to the amount charged to your card or the cost to repair or replace the item up to $10,000. Citi also doesn't impose an annual maximum, so you could make multiple extended warranty claims per year.

The Citi Strata Elite℠ Card is Citi's premier rewards card, delivering top-tier travel and dining rewards and standout perks like a $300 annual hotel credit and no foreign transaction fees. • Earn 75,000 bonus Points after spending $6,000 in the first 3 months of account opening.
  • Earn 12 Points per $1 spent on Hotels, Car Rentals, and Attractions booked on cititravel.com and 6 Points per $1 spent on Air Travel booked on cititravel.com

  • Earn 1.5 Points per $1 spent on All Other Purchases
  • Up to $300 Annual Hotel Benefit: Each calendar year, enjoy up to $300 off a hotel stay of two nights or more when booked through cititravel.com.

  • 1.5X – Earn 1.5 Points per $1 spent on All Other Purchases.

The only reason the Citi Strata Elite℠ Card didn't make the top spot of extended warranty credit cards over the Palladium Card is that it earns a slightly lower 1.5X Citi ThankYou® Points per $1 spent on non-bonus category spending and charges a slightly higher annual fee of $595.

However, it does offer a $200 annual Splurge Credit℠. You can select up to two merchants from a long list of options to qualify for the credit. One potential merchant is Best Buy, which sells everything from a refrigerator to a computer. Using your Citi Strata Elite could help you save $200, earn 1.5X points, and stay covered for up to two additional years.

Several other Citi cards offer an extended warranty benefit, including the Citi Strata Premier® Card. If you already have a Citi card in your wallet, check your benefits guide for more information.

Best for long initial warranty: Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express

The coverage from American Express is another great option if you don’t carry a Bilt or Citi card in your wallet.

The policy for Blue Cash Preferred® Card from American Express cardholders allows for a five-year initial warranty duration, which exceeds Citi's or Bilt's two-year policy. Amex also lets you purchase extended warranty packages from the manufacturer or retailer and still add 12 months' coverage, provided the manufacturer's warranty and the purchased warranty combined do not exceed five years. You can be reimbursed up to $10,000 per covered purchase and up to $50,000 per eligible card each calendar year.

In other words, the maximum coverage amount of six years is the same, but how we get there is different. Amex allows up to five years of initial warranty and will add up to one additional year, while Citi and Bilt offer up to four years of combined manufacturer and purchased warranty and will add up to two years. Choosing American Express can save you money, however, since you don't have to purchase your own warranty to reach the six-year mark.

Unfortunately, you'll earn just 1% cash back on non-bonus category spending with your Blue Cash Preferred. That said, it charges a $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95 (Rates & Fees), so it's an affordable card to keep in your wallet.

Best for comprehensive protections: Chase Sapphire Reserve®

It's hard to beat the comprehensive coverage offered by the Chase Sapphire Reserve®. If you want to stay protected, whether for your new dishwasher or your trip to the Bahamas, you'll want to use your Sapphire Reserve on your purchases.

Chase's extended warranty provides one additional year of coverage for items with a warranty of three years or less. Chase also allows you to purchase your own warranty, as long as the combined purchased and manufacturer warranties are three years or less. This is shorter than the five-year initial warranty allowed by American Express, but longer than the two-year initial warranty from Citi or Bilt. You'll be covered up to $10,000 per claim and $50,000 per account. You'll even be covered if you use your Ultimate Rewards to make the purchase, although you'll be reimbursed in dollars.

However, what sets the Sapphire Reserve apart is that it also gets purchase protection of up to $10,000 per item for up to 120 days, and return protection for up to 90 days and up to $500 per item.

Unfortunately, the drawback of the Bank of America Premium Rewards Card is that points can only be redeemed as a deposit into eligible Bank of America checking or savings accounts, for credit to an eligible account with Merrill, as a statement credit to your credit card, or for gift cards and purchases at BofA Travel — no access to transfer partners for outsized redemptions. Still, if you're looking for a fairly comprehensive extended warranty policy and low annual fee, the Bank of America Premium Rewards Card is a solid choice.

How To File a Claim

To make an extended warranty claim, you need to keep the credit card receipt, shop receipt, original manufacturer warranty, and the details of any customer-purchased extended warranty policy. You’ll be asked to provide the original credit card statement recording the purchase.

To initiate a claim, contact the relevant phone number below, or visit the listed website for your provider:

  • American Express: Visit americanexpress.com/onlineclaim or call 1-800-228-6855 within 30 days of loss or as soon as possible. Submit proof of loss and requested documentation within 60 days.
  • Bank of America: Contact the benefit administrator within 90 days of product failure.
  • Bilt: Visit mycardbenefits.com or call 1-800-Mastercard within 60 days of the failure, or as soon as reasonably possible. Provide written proof within 180 days.

  • Receipt showing covered item(s).
  • Statement showing covered item(s).
  • Itemized purchase receipt(s).
  • Original Manufacturer’s Warranty or Store Warranty.
  • Service contract or optional extended warranty, if applicable.
  • Itemized repair estimate from a certified repair facility or service provider.

Final Thoughts

With extended warranty policies covering up to $10,000 per claim, the value derived from this benefit could comfortably eclipse the value of rewards earned over the time you hold the card.

Bilt and Citi both provide standout extended warranty policies, offering 24 months of extra protection on top of the combined manufacturer and purchased warranties of four years or less, delivering up to 6 years of warranty in total for items purchased with your Citi card. Amex also offers a top policy on many of its card products.

To maximize a policy, you could, in theory, purchase a short extended warranty and then piggyback the additional warranty on a credit card. Adding a year or two of warranty directly from a retailer could be relatively inexpensive. When those more expensive 3- or 4-year policies would be desired, you could skip them and leverage the coverage on your credit card.
