Popular rideshare service Uber has a rewards program called Uber One, and it can really help frequent riders rack up savings. Unfortunately, Uber is making some changes to Uber One, including reducing the rewards members will earn on rides from 6% to 5%. That may not seem like a big change, but it can really add up for those who use the rideshare service often.

And it's not all bad news. Uber is making some positive changes as well. Let's dive into the specifics.

Upcoming Uber One Changes

Although there is no definite date for the changes to begin, Uber says that members will see the following in the coming weeks:

  • Eligible rides will earn 5% Uber One credits, down from 6%. Uber One credits can be used on future Uber or Uber Eats orders.
  • Add one additional adult and teens to your account at no extra cost.
  • Membership benefits will apply to 45+ countries where Uber One is available.
  • Earn 10% Uber One credits on hotels booked through Uber and 20% on select properties.

While the ability to add family members to your Uber One account at no cost is appealing, the 17% reduction in Uber One rewards definitely highlights the news. This falls in line with the string of rewards devaluations over the last couple of years.

Uber One Benefits

An Uber One membership offers discounts on Uber and Uber Eats orders. The cost is $9.99 per month or $96 per year. Memberships include the following:

  • $0 delivery on Uber Eats food and grocery orders that meet a minimum threshold.
  • 5% Uber Cash back in rewards on Uber rides.
  • Up to 10% back on select delivery and pickup orders.
  • Surge savings during popular times.
  • 10% rewards on car rentals and now hotels booked through Uber.
  • Member-only promos and special items.

Again, for frequent users of Uber's services, these benefits can outweigh the cost. Plus, The Business Platinum Card® from American Express cardmembers receive a statement credit for an Uber One membership, up to $120 per year. Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

Bottom Line

Uber One is becoming a little less rewarding for frequent riders, but the broader changes aren't entirely negative. Cutting rewards on eligible rides from 6% to 5% means members will earn less every time they ride — and the more you spend with Uber, the more noticeable that reduction becomes.

On the other hand, the ability to add another adult and teens at no additional cost could make Uber One considerably more useful for families. Extending membership benefits across 45+ countries is also a welcome improvement for travelers who regularly use Uber abroad.

Ultimately, whether these changes are a net positive will depend on how you use Uber One. Frequent solo riders are unquestionably losing some value, while families and international travelers may get more from their membership than before. And if you receive an Uber One membership through the American Express Platinum Card®, it's still an easy benefit to put to use without worrying about whether you're getting enough value to justify paying the membership fee yourself.
