Last summer, Air Canada's Aeroplan added yet another partner airline: Eurowings. Effective July 27, 2021, Eurowings Discover — a European leisure carrier that launched around the same time — was added to the Aeroplan program. One year later, this partnership is much more relevant and valuable than when it just launched.

Here are the details of that partnership and what it means for travelers and Aeroplan members.

What Is Eurowings Discover?

The parent company of Lufthansa, Swiss International Air Lines, and Brussels Airlines announced the launch of a new leisure carrier in July 2021. Now, Eurowings Discover serves as the Lufthansa Group's long-haul, low-cost leisure carrier.

Eurowings Discover complements intra-European services offered by Eurowings Europe. Eurowings once offered a relatively robust network of leisure routes serving the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and South Africa. However, these operations were cut in 2020 as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

So, Lufthansa Group relaunched its long-haul, low-cost leisure airline as Eurowings Discover.

When first launched, Eurowings Discover was only available on a handful of routes. Now, a year after the launch of the new airline, it's grown to serve dozens of routes from the airline's hubs of Frankfurt (FRA) and Munich (MUC):

Eurowings Discover's U.S. destinations include:

  • Anchorage (ANC): 3x weekly
  • Fort Meyers, FL (RSW): 3x weekly
  • Las Vegas (LAS): 4x weekly from FRA, 2x weekly from MUC
  • Salt Lake City (SLC): 3x weekly
  • Tampa (TPA): 6x weekly

Eurowings Discover operates a fleet of Airbus A330s (including the -200 and -300) with Airbus A320 for shorter routes. The airline's Airbus A330s feature between 22-30 lie-flat business class seats, 17 to 31 premium economy seats, and up to 244 seats in economy.

Aeroplan Adds Eurowings Discover as a Partner Airline

Eurowings – Aeroplan Partnership

Both Eurowings Europe and Eurowings Discover have also joined Air Canada's Aeroplan program as partner airlines. However, the partnership varies a bit between the two airlines.

Earning Aeroplan Points on Eurowings Europe and Eurowings Discover

Aeroplan members can earn points on flights operated by Eurowings Europe and Eurowings Discover. All flights operated by Eurowings — regardless of the cabin of service — are eligible to earn Aeroplan points. However, a few fare types are ineligible for point accumulation, including deeply discounted business and economy fares.

Here's how Aeroplan members will earn points when traveling on flights operated by Eurowings:

With Eurowings as a partner, Aeroplan members can earn Status Qualifying Miles (SQM) and Status Qualifying Segments (SQS) on Eurowings flights. However, Status Qualifying Dollars (SQD) are only earned on flights operated by Eurowings flights ticketed by Air Canada.

Redeeming Aeroplan Points on Eurowings Discover

As part of this partnership, Aeroplan members can redeem points for flights operated by Eurowings Discover — but not Eurowings Eurowings. Here's the Aeroplan award chart showing how many Aeroplan points you'll need for flights between North America and Europe:

Aeroplan award chart North America to Atlantic

Only one Eurowings Discover route is under 4,000 miles in distance: Frankfurt (FRA) to Halifax, Canada (YHZ). That means all other Aeroplan awards on Eurowings Discover between Europe and North America will cost:

  • 40,000 Aeroplan points in economy.
  • 70,000 Aeroplan points in business class.

For example, you can book an Eurowings Discover flight from Salt Lake City (SLC) to Frankfurt (FRA) for 40k Aeroplan points in economy or 70k points in business class:

Remember that Aeroplan charges award rates based on the total distance of the trip. So, you can connect within North America or Europe, using the Eurowings Discover flight across the Atlantic. As long as you fly less than 6,000 miles in total, you'll pay 40k in economy or 70k in business class.

How to Earn Aeroplan Points

If you're hoping to redeem Aeroplan points for a flight operated by Eurowings, there are a few ways to rack up points. The first and most obvious route is to travel on Air Canada or one of Air Canada's many partner airlines. You can earn Aeroplan points when flying with more than three dozen global airline partners. Partner airlines include:

  • United Airlines
  • Lufthansa
  • TAP Portugal
  • Singapore Airlines
  • GOL
  • Copa Airlines
  • Azul
  • Avianca
  • Brussels Airlines

If you don't have plans to travel in the near future, you can also earn points with one of the many Aeroplan co-branded credit cards. U.S. residents can apply for the Aeroplan® Credit Card from Chase. New cardholders can earn 75,000 bonus points.

Use Points Transfers

Here is a list of programs that allow you to transfer miles or points to your Aeroplan account:

Purchase Points

Finally, Aeroplan members can purchase points. Aeroplan recently finished an amazing promotion that allowed members to earn an 100% bonus when purchasing points. I recommend that readers wait until promotional periods to purchase miles or points. However, if you're unable to wait, here's a breakdown of what you'll get when purchasing Aeroplan points:

  • Minimum points that can be purchased in a single transaction: 2,000 points
  • Maximum points that can be purchased in a single transaction: 350,000 points
  • Maximum number of points that can be purchased in a calendar year: 1,000,000 points
  • Cost to purchase minimum points (2,000 points): $60 CAD (~$49 USD)
  • Cost to purchase maximum points (350,000 points): $10,500 CAD (~$8,450 USD)
  • Price per point: ~3 cents CAD per point (~2 cents USD per point)

In recent award redemptions, AwardWallet users have gotten around 1.85¢ US per Aeroplan point.

The Bottom Line

Aeroplan's partnership with Eurowings Europe and Eurowings Discover gives members even more options for earning and redeeming Aeroplan points. And this partnership is even more valuable now than it was a year ago when it launched, thanks to the expansion of Eurowings Discover to even more routes.

40k economy awards to Europe isn't good. After all, you can currently book Flying Blue awards to Europe for 15k. However, 70k awards in a lie-flat business class seat is undoubtedly something to be excited about.

Are you planning to redeem your Aeroplan points for a flight on Eurowings? If so, what destination are you visiting?
