What do you get when you combine highly valuable airline miles, a valuable companion ticket each year, free checked bags, and a strong earning structure? You get the Alaska Airlines Visa® Business card from Bank of America.

The card offers valuable ongoing benefits that more than justify the annual fee — which is $70 for the company and $25 per card. But that's assuming the benefits and earning structure work for your needs as you accrue Alaska Mileage Plan miles.

Should you apply for this card? Let's take a closer look so you can make an informed decision.

Alaska Business Card Welcome Offer

The Alaska Business Card is currently offering 60,000 bonus miles plus Alaska's Famous Companion Fare™ from $122 ($99 fare plus taxes and fees from $23) after you make $4,000 or more in purchases within the first 90 days of opening your account.

The Companion Fare lets you bring another person on an Alaska Airlines flight with you for just a $99 fare plus taxes and fees (from $23). There's no limit to the ticket cost against which you can redeem this Companion Fare.

As to what the miles are worth, consider that AwardWallet users typically redeem Alaska miles for 2.1¢ apiece. That's higher than most airline programs — by a long shot on some of them.

Alaska Business Card Benefits

The Alaska Business Card provides several ongoing benefits that endure past the welcome offer.

Annual Companion Fare for cardholders

Every year on the account opening anniversary, you receive a Companion Fare code in your Alaska Mileage Plan account. The code is valid on Alaska Airlines for a round-trip or one-way coach companion fare. The companion fare starts from $122, which breaks down as $99 for the base fare plus taxes and fees starting at $23, depending on the itinerary.

Cardholders benefit from the annual companion fare after spending $6,000 in the previous anniversary year. To use the code, both the primary and companion fares must be paid for using your Alaska Business Card.

First checked bag free

Every time you fly with Alaska, you will receive your first checked bag free. This perk can add up to substantial savings over time, especially when you consider that it also applies to up to six other passengers on the same reservation as you.

Consider that Alaska charges $35 for the first checked bag. If you take only one round-trip per year with a family of four, that's a savings of $280. That more than makes up for the card's annual fee.

20% off in-flight purchases

Receive a 20% rebate as a statement credit every time you use your card for eligible in-flight purchases. The rebate applies to food, beverages, and Alaska Wi-Fi purchases. You can expect this statement credit to hit your account within seven days of the transaction posting date.

The Alaska Business Card isn't as attractive as some of its competitors when it comes to earning rates in broadly defined, popular business spending categories like travel, advertising, and computer equipment. Companies with significant shipping expenses or businesses that spend a lot on fuel or EV charging can earn 2X miles per dollar on those purchases, but overall, the card doesn't stand out for its earning rates.

However, the Alaska Business Card does offer one earning-related benefit that deserves attention: If your company has an eligible Bank of America® small business account, you'll earn a 10% rewards bonus on all miles earned from card purchases. That means you'll earn 3.3X, 2.2X, or 1.1X across the spending categories.

Redeeming Miles With the Alaska Business Card

Alaska Mileage Plan miles are extremely valuable, thanks to a robust ever-growing partner network on which you can redeem your miles. It doesn't matter if you never go to Alaska — though you can unlock excellent value on flights there, too.

When it comes to redeeming your Alaska miles, there are plenty of solid options. You can redeem your miles across the entire Oneworld network, as well as other partners like Air Tahiti Nui, Condor, El Al, Icelandair, Singapore Airlines, and Starlux.

It's also possible to use your miles for things beyond flights, such as hotels, upgrades, charity donations, magazines, Wi-Fi, and more. However, these tend to provide lower value than redeeming miles for flights. You should aim to get at least 1.31¢ per mile when redeeming Alaska miles, as that's what our users get (on average) when redeeming miles for short-haul economy flights. Anything above that is even better.

Application Restrictions and Strategy

Bank of America imposes some eligibility criteria on its credit card applications. First, you may not be eligible for the bonus on this card if you've received a bonus on this same card within the past 24 months. Next, Bank of America's 2/3/4 rule imposes a limit of:

  • Two new Bank of America cards within two months
  • Three new Bank of America cards within 12 months
  • Four new Bank of America cards within 24 months

Bank of America also has a rule under which it determines your eligibility based on how many cards you've opened across all banks, based on what's showing on your credit report. It works like this:

  • If you have a deposit account with Bank of America: Your card application will be denied if you've opened seven new cards in the past 12 months, based on what's showing on your credit report.
  • If you DO NOT have a deposit account with Bank of America: Your card application will be denied if you've opened three new cards in the past 12 months.

As you might expect, this card is for business use, but you might be surprised by how easy it is to qualify as a small business.

Cards That Compete With the Alaska Business Card

The Alaska Business Card doesn't make sense for every business owner. But some of its closest competitors might be a better fit instead:

  • If you want a small business card from a different Oneworld airline, the Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ World Elite Mastercard® could be a winner. The annual fee is $99, waived for first 12 months, and you'll earn AA miles that you can redeem with dozens of partners quite easily. You'll also enjoy free checked bags, in-flight purchase discounts, priority boarding, and earning Loyalty Points toward AA status from purchases on the card. You can also earn a companion ticket by spending on the card each year. Learn more in our Citi AAdvantage Business Card review.
  • If you want an airline card but aren't tied to Oneworld, The New United℠ Business Card offers several interesting benefits. There's no companion ticket, but you'll get 5,000 bonus miles each year if you hold a United personal and business credit card, can spend toward status through purchases, get a free checked bag on United flights, priority boarding, and can earn a $125 United travel credit each year. Our full United Business Card review has additional details.
  • If you want a card with points you can use in numerous ways, consider the Ink Business Preferred® Credit Card. With this card, you can redeem your points with 14 airline and hotel partners, redeem as cash back, or purchase travel in the portal by using your points at up to 1.75 cents per point (depending on your specific redemption). You'll earn 3X on up to $150,000 of annual spending on popular business categories, but you won't have any airline-specific benefits like free checked bags.
