In recent years, American Airlines' flight award chart has become more of a suggestion than a rule. It's not unusual to see actual award pricing exceeding the “starting at” pricing — sometimes by a mile.

But this morning, American Airlines announced an award sale, offering 1 million seats with select routes starting at just 5,000 AAdvantage® miles. Unlike previous “promotions,” the prices for this one are as low as advertised, and availability is generally pretty good.

Here's a look at the newest AAdvantage award sale.

American Airlines award sale route highlights

The award sale's banner image suggests flights are bookable for as few as 5,000 AAdvantage miles, and that's what we're seeing on mock award searches.

Here's a look at some of the eligible routes and pricing that you can book for a small sum of miles (note the prevalence of international destinations):

  • Charlotte (CLT) to San Francisco (SFO): 5,000 miles + $6
  • Los Angeles (LAX) to New York (JFK): 5,000 miles + $6
  • Philadelphia (PHL) to Cancun (CUN): 5,000 miles + $49
  • Detroit (DTW) to Liberia, Costa Rica (LIR): 5,000 miles + $25
  • Chicago (ORD) to Belize City (BZE): 5,000 miles + $8
  • Boston (BOS) to Nassau (NAS): 5,000 miles + $7
  • Phoenix (PHX) or Miami (MIA) to London (LHR): 15,000 miles +6
  • San Diego (SAN) to Munich (MUC): 20,000 miles + $6
  • Orlando (MCO) to Rome (FCO): 20,000 miles + $6
  • Sacramento (SMF) to Athens (ATH): 20,000 miles + $6

Your mileage may vary when you search for awards. You can head to AA's promotional page and enter various from/to combinations to see potential flights.

But even if you don't see a route you want to fly listed in the eligible category, it's still worth searching for an award to see if deal-style pricing is available. For example, the promotion page showed only one result for Cleveland (CLE) to Tampa (TPA) but doing a regular search with calendar view shows every day in September at 5,000 miles.

Or here's an Omaha (OMA) to Grand Cayman (GCM) round-trip award for only 10,000 AAdvantage miles and $120 (fees to and from the Caribbean can be high).

Earning AAdvantage Miles

If you find an award route that works for you, you'll want to book it quickly. Availability is fleeting, so there's no time to go out and earn a signup bonus on one of American Airlines' co-branded credit cards.

Unfortunately, American Airlines is not a partner of any transferable points, so being ready to strike when a deal like this arises is the perfect example of why diversifying the types of points you earn is paramount.

Final Thoughts

American Airlines' cheap award sale is surprisingly good. Seats to not only the U.S. and Caribbean but Europe as well — especially during peak summer season — make this the perfect opportunity for last minute summer travel plans.

Ultimately, you'll want to book quickly if you see something you like. The promotional booking period ends on May 28, but you shouldn't wait until the end to make your reservations. And note that you need to fly between August 1 and September 30, 2025 to take advantage of this promotion.
