In early 2025, Lufthansa Group finalized its 41% acquisition of ITA Airways, setting the stage for ITA’s departure from the SkyTeam alliance. Now, the next chapter is unfolding: Delta and ITA Airways will end their partnership on September 1, 2025.
Here’s what that means for Delta SkyMiles and ITA Volare members — including when reciprocal elite perks will disappear and the last day to book ITA flights with Delta miles.
Delta Perks End on ITA Airways September 1, 2025
On Delta's Global Airline Partners page, the airline spells out the timeline clearly:
“ITA Airways is no longer a member of the SkyTeam Alliance. Effective September 1, 2025, ITA Airways will no longer be a Delta Air Lines partner. Additionally, as of May 1, 2025, lounge benefits with ITA Airways were discontinued.”
Despite ITA Airways' departure from the SkyTeam alliance, Delta Medallion members have continued to enjoy Medallion benefits on ITA Airways. The only perk that's been removed is lounge access to ITA lounges. Medallion Benefits include:
- Priority check-in
- Priority boarding
- Extra baggage allowance
- Priority standby
- Preferred seats
- Priority bag drop
- Priority transfer desk
- Priority immigration
- Priority reservation waitlist
Higher tiered Delta Medallions (Gold, Platinum, and Diamonds) still enjoy:
- Priority security
- Priority bag handling
- Guaranteed reservations
Earning and redeeming Delta miles on ITA Airways
Since May 1, Delta members have continued to earn miles on the following flights:
- ITA Airways-marketed/ITA Airways-operated
- Delta-marketed/ITA Airways-operated
- ITA Airways-marketed/Delta-operated
Delta members do not earn miles on ITA flights that are marketed or operated by SkyTeam partner airlines. Partner-marketed flights earn a percentage of the distance flown based on fare class. Medallion-qualifying Dollars (MQDs) continue to be earned based on distance flown by fare class. The following bonuses are paid for Medallion elites until September 1:
- Silver: 40%
- Gold: 60%
- Platinum: 80%
- Diamond: 120%
Here's the current earnings chart for the agreement:

Delta members looking to use Delta miles for flights on ITA Airways must do so by August 31, 2025. Flights booked must be taken within a year of booking. After that, award travel will no longer be possible on ITA Airways using Delta miles.
ITA Airways elites enjoy benefits, too.o
ITA Volare elites also will continue to enjoy benefits on Delta Airlines flights until September 1, 2025.
Plus Club will enjoy the following benefits:
- Extra baggage allowance (up to 10kg) or extra baggage
- Priority check-in
- Priority baggage drop-off
- Priority boarding
Premium Club and Executive Club members will enjoy the following benefits:
- Extra baggage allowance (up to 20kg) or extra baggage
- Priority check-in
- Priority baggage drop-off
- Priority boarding
- “Priority” services
- Fast track
- Priority baggage handling
Our take
While the end of the Delta–ITA Airways partnership isn’t surprising, it’s a meaningful change for travelers who relied on earning SkyMiles or enjoying elite perks when flying to or within Italy. The good news: you can still take advantage of reciprocal benefits through the busy summer travel season. Just make sure to lock in any ITA award bookings with Delta miles by August 31, 2025.
Looking ahead, ITA Airways is expected to join Star Alliance — aligning it with Lufthansa, United, and other carriers. That could open new possibilities for frequent flyers, but for now, September 1 is the cutoff date to watch.
