PayPal was one of the original digital wallet providers. Formed in the late 1990s, PayPal lets users transact online without entering their bank or credit card details each time. Over the years, PayPal has evolved and is now a financial service provider with a digital wallet at the core of its business model.

Like most big programs, PayPal launched its loyalty program, PayPal Rewards. With the program, you earn and redeem points through offers in the PayPal app or website — or through PayPal's partnership with the Honey shopping extension.

And like other loyalty programs, PayPal Rewards has its own points expiration policy. Here is all you need to know about the expiration of PayPal Rewards points.

Do PayPal Rewards Points Expire?

Your PayPal Rewards points expire if you do not earn at least 10 points within the last 365 days or complete three eligible transactions within the same timeframe. Per the PayPal T&Cs:

“Per the program terms, PayPal Rewards points will expire if you don't earn at least 10 points within each consecutive 365-day period or don't complete at least 3 eligible PayPal account transactions within a consecutive 365-day period.”

Once expired, your PayPal Rewards Points cannot be reinstated.

Which Activities Count Toward Keeping Your PayPal Rewards Balance Active

In addition to earning PayPal points, all of the following activities count towards the three eligible transactions.

  • Using your PayPal account to complete a PayPal checkout transaction.
  • Sending or receiving money via your PayPal account.
  • Adding funds to your PayPal account balance.
  • Transfer funds from your PayPal account to your linked debit card or bank account.
  • Making a purchase using your PayPal Cashback Mastercard®.
  • Transfer funds to your PayPal savings account.

Using PayPal Rewards Points

The PayPal Rewards Program is straightforward to use. There are no strategies and tricks to finding sweet spots. Neither are their airline transfer partners, nor can you transfer other points to the program. All you do is earn points and then use them to offset the cost of your subsequent purchases.

Our Take

Although 365 days is a short time frame in the world of points and miles, this is more than made up for by the vast number of everyday activities that can earn you PayPal points or count towards resetting your balance. Simply moving some money around three times should count towards keeping your points balance active indefinitely.

With so many ways to keep your points balance active, taking your eye off the ball and allowing your points to expire is unforgivable.
