What was once an offer that came and went is now a regular benefit. Marriott Bonvoy members can leverage their Marriott elite status to match to Hertz President's Circle or Five Star status. Here are the details on this status match opportunity — plus how to claim bonus Marriott points with a Hertz rental.

Hertz Elite Status Overview

Hertz is arguably one of the most easily recognizable names in the car rental industry. Although user experiences vary by location, odds are you've rented from Hertz if you've rented a car before. And, as with any program, it's nice to have elite status in the Hertz Gold Plus program to enjoy extra perks.

Here's a look at the Hertz elite status tiers and the benefits offered:

Gold status

You'll earn Gold status just by signing up for Hertz's loyalty program. You can enjoy the following benefits:

Earn one point per $1
Free additional driver for a spouse or domestic partner
Skip the counter at pick up and return
A basic selection of cars
No blackout rewards
Earnings with other brands

Hertz Five Star status

After three rentals or $1,000 in spending, you will move up to Hertz Five Star elite status, which comes with the following benefits (in addition to Gold status benefits):

Upgrades as available
25% bonus points
A wider selection of premium vehicles

Hertz President's Circle status

After 15 rentals or $3,000 in qualifying spending, you will reach top-tier President's Circle status, which comes with the following benefits (in addition to Five Star status benefits):

Guaranteed upgrades (based on availability)
50% bonus points
The widest selection of cars
A dedicated call center line

Note that these perks are unrelated to the number of points you need for a free rental.

How to Status Match from Marriott to Hertz

To status match from Marriott to Hertz, you first need to ensure you're enrolled in both programs. There used to be a dedicated Marriott Bonvoy / Hertz status match page, but now you need to send an email. Hertz made earning status even easier, and as a result, the status match program has gotten a bit murky.

You need to send an email to Digitalmarketing@hertz.com with proof of identity and proof of status. Provide the following information:

Proof of identity (all items listed are required)

Customer First and Last Name as it appears on your Hertz Account. You can provide 2-3 of these.
Customer address as it appears on your Hertz Account
Customer phone number
Customer email address

Scanned image showing proof of status (only one of the items listed is required)

Monthly statement indicating membership status
Copy of a credentials letter (membership kit)
Copy of a welcome letter
Member card with expiration date

Hertz status match is only available for Hertz members in the U.S. and Canada. The status match will take 7-10 business days after the email is sent.

Which Hertz elite status tier will you get?

Hertz lowered the threshold for earning Five Star status from $2,000 in spend or 10 rentals to $1,000 in spend or three rentals. When this happened, the status match between Marriott and Hertz became much more confusing.

Previously, the status match was as follows:

Marriott Platinum Elites get a fast track to Hertz Five Star
Titanium Elites get automatic Hertz Five Star
Ambassador Elites get automatic Hertz President's Circle

Marriott Platinum Elite members would need to complete seven rentals in 12 months (down from 10) to earn Five Star. Now that Five Star requires just three rentals, this fast track obviously needs different requirements.

When reaching out to a Hertz representative, they shared that there is no longer a rental requirement. You simply need to submit one of the qualifications to the email. However, they wouldn't confirm which tiers of Marriott Bonvoy status equate to which tiers of Hertz status. So, it's not clear if Platinum elites qualify for any Hertz status or not.

Score Bonus Marriott Points With a Hertz Rental

Marriott Bonvoy often offers promotions that let members earn bonus points when booking a car rental through the Marriott rental car portal. The number of bonus points you earn usually depends on your rental agency and your Marriott Bonvoy elite status tier.

Presently, all Marriott Members can earn 500 points per Hertz rental. Elite members can earn an extra 200, for a total of 700 Marriott points.

Our Take

If you hold Marriott Bonvoy elite status, it's worth sending an email to see which (if any) Hertz status you can match to. Keep in mind that this status match is just one way to claim rental elite status for free. While not everyone rents with Hertz, it's always good to have elite status benefits for any program. Plus, you may be able to use your newfound Hertz status to gain status with other rental car programs.
