This guide explains how Emerald Club works, what each status tier includes, how to earn and redeem Free Days, and when National's convenience benefits justify paying more than another rental company charges.
National Car Rental and Emerald Club at a Glance
National advertises more than 1,500 locations worldwide. However, Emerald Club's signature services are not identical across that network. The Emerald Aisle, Executive Area, and Emerald Checkout are limited to participating locations in the U.S. and Canada. Other locations may offer expedited counter service, a one-class upgrade, or only the ability to earn and redeem rewards.
Emerald Club is free to join and has three published tiers:

National upgrades members as they qualify during the calendar year. The program reviews the prior year's activity and re-tiers members in March. Rentals can qualify either by transaction count or paid rental days; you do not need to meet both measures.

How Emerald Club Makes Rentals Faster
Emerald Club offers several pickup methods. The service attached to your reservation matters because “Emerald Club location” does not automatically mean “choose any car and bypass the counter.” Check the location and reservation details before arrival.
Emerald Aisle
The Emerald Aisle is the program's best-known benefit. At a participating U.S. or Canadian location, reserve a midsize car, bypass the counter, and choose an available vehicle from the Aisle. You pay the reserved midsize rate even if you select a larger vehicle.
The final selection depends on what other renters have taken and what the location has placed in the Aisle. Membership does not guarantee a particular make, model, feature, or larger vehicle. If you need a minivan, SUV, convertible, or another specific class, reserve that class instead of relying on Aisle inventory.
Executive Area
Executive and Executive Elite members can use the Executive Area at participating U.S. and Canadian locations. National describes this section as containing full-size and larger vehicles. Members choose an available car and pay the reserved midsize rate.
This is the clearest practical advantage of Executive status. A traveler who would otherwise pay for a full-size vehicle may be able to reserve a midsize car and select a full-size or larger model on arrival. As with the standard Aisle, the exact inventory varies.
Emerald Reserve Service
The Emerald Reserve Service is the better option when vehicle class matters. At participating U.S. and Canadian locations, reserve the class you need, bypass the counter, and choose a vehicle from that class's designated row. National says this service is available at more than 70 locations.
You pay the rate for the class you reserved, so this is not an Aisle-style upgrade benefit. Its value is certainty: You are not gambling on finding a suitable SUV or minivan in a general selection area.
Emerald Checkout and the National app
At participating Emerald Aisle locations in the U.S. and Canada, Emerald Checkout lets members scan the vehicle's QR code or barcode in the National app, review rental details and payment information, and generate a Virtual Pass. You still show your driver's license and the pass at the exit booth, but the app can shorten the transaction there.
The National app also stores reservations, rental activity, profile information, and rewards. Members who prefer the website can book and redeem Free Days there instead.
Counter Service, Emerald Alerts, and Drop & Go
At locations without Aisle access, Emerald Club Counter Service provides a dedicated line or, at some locations, a booth on the rental lot. Members present a driver's license and payment card, receive the agreement and keys, and proceed to the vehicle.
Emerald Alerts can provide reservation, arrival, and return information by email. Drop & Go lets members return an undamaged vehicle and receive an electronic receipt without waiting at the counter. Procedures still vary by location, so follow the return instructions on the rental agreement and at the facility.
Emerald Club Status Benefits
Higher status improves both the pickup experience and the rewards program. The following benefits come from National's current Emerald Club benefits page; availability and geographic restrictions apply.
Emerald Club
Base members receive:
- Emerald Aisle access: Reserve a midsize car and choose an available vehicle from the Emerald Aisle at participating locations in the U.S. and Canada.
- Free Days after seven credits: A Free Day covers up to a midsize vehicle at the base tier.
- Choice of rewards: Select Emerald Club rental credits or rewards from a participating airline, hotel, or other partner.
- No second-driver fee: National waives the additional-driver charge for qualifying family members and business associates. Additional drivers must meet the location's age, license, and other rental requirements.
- Enterprise earning: Qualifying rentals at participating Enterprise Rent-A-Car locations can earn Emerald Club rental credits and count toward elite status.
- International service benefits: National advertises priority service in Europe, Latin America, and the Caribbean, plus a space-available one-class upgrade at participating locations in the U.K., Ireland, France, Spain, and Germany.
- Emerald Alerts and Drop & Go: Members can receive trip information and electronic receipts and may use an expedited return process at participating locations.
Executive
Executive requires 12 paid rentals or 40 paid rental days in a calendar year. It includes the base-tier benefits plus:
- Executive Area access: Choose an available full-size or larger vehicle from the Executive Area and pay the reserved midsize rate at participating U.S. and Canadian locations.
- Faster Free Days: Six rental credits automatically convert into a Free Day valid for up to a full-size vehicle.
- Guaranteed upgrades: National promises an upgrade when an Executive member reserves a full-size through luxury vehicle in the U.S. or Canada. Specialty vehicles are excluded, and the benefit remains subject to the program and rental terms.
- Premier Selection pricing: Members may receive special pricing when paying to upgrade to a high-end vehicle from National's Premier Selection at participating U.S. and Canadian locations.
Executive Elite
Executive Elite requires 25 paid rentals or 85 paid rental days in a calendar year. It includes the lower-tier benefits plus:
- Fastest Free Days: Five rental credits automatically convert into a Free Day.
- Broader Free Day redemptions: Executive Elite members can redeem a Free Day for any available car class except trucks and exotic vehicles. National explicitly advertises no blackout dates for this benefit, though vehicle availability and other rental restrictions still apply.
- Guaranteed vehicle: National guarantees a vehicle up to full-size with at least 24 hours' notice at participating locations in the U.S. and Canada. This promises transportation, not a specific make or model.
National also promotes private-airport delivery in the U.S. and Canada, subject to geographic restrictions. Its current consumer benefits page labels that service as not exclusive to Emerald Club members, so it should not be treated as a defining Executive Elite perk.
How to Earn Emerald Club Rental Credits
Members must select rental credits as their earning preference and attach their Emerald Club number to an eligible rental. National issues credits after the rental is completed.
The earning formula favors frequent, short rentals:
- A rental lasting one to seven consecutive days earns one credit.
- An eight- to 11-day rental earns two credits.
- A 12- to 15-day rental earns three credits.
- Each additional four consecutive days earns another credit.
For example, seven separate one-day rentals can earn seven credits, while one seven-day rental earns only one credit. A traveler who rents weekly for work will therefore reach a Free Day much faster than someone who takes an occasional long road trip.
National's 2026 program rules also address back-to-back and overlapping rentals. When a member returns one vehicle and picks up another on the same day at the same participating location — or holds multiple overlapping rentals from that location — only the first returned rental earns rental credits. Those transactions may still count separately toward elite-tier qualification if they otherwise meet the rules.
Which rentals do not earn credits?
Several rentals are excluded from earning Emerald Club rental credits, including:
- Rentals booked with a corporate rate that does not permit employee participation in rewards programs.
- Rentals for which the member chooses airline miles, hotel points, or other partner rewards.
- Insurance, dealer, body shop, or fleet replacement rentals.
- Tour-package rentals, opaque-site bookings, broker rentals, and rentals prepaid through third parties.
- Certain employee-rate, Enterprise Truck Rental, Enterprise CarShare, Commute with Enterprise, and Subscribe with Enterprise rentals.
This makes direct booking particularly important. A lower price from a third-party site can still be worthwhile, but do not assume it will earn rental credits or status.
Earning credits and status with Enterprise
Qualifying Enterprise rentals can count toward Emerald Club elite status and Free Days when the member's Emerald Club number is attached to the reservation or rental. Participation varies by location, and some airport branches are excluded.
Emerald Club elite benefits apply when renting from National, not Enterprise. In other words, an Enterprise rental may move you closer to Executive status, but Executive status will not give you an Executive Area or guaranteed upgrade on that Enterprise rental.

Rental Credits vs. Airline or Hotel Rewards
Emerald Club members choose between rental credits and partner rewards. National's current partners include airlines, hotels, and other travel programs, with earnings based on spending, rental days, or the completed rental.
Choosing partner rewards has two consequences:
- The rental does not earn an Emerald Club rental credit.
- National may add a Frequent Traveler Recovery Fee. The amount depends on the partner and rental location.
The rental can still count toward Executive or Executive Elite qualification. That distinction makes partner rewards more reasonable for someone pursuing status but unlikely to earn enough rental credits for a useful Free Day.
For most frequent National renters, rental credits are the better default. Compare the likely value of a Free Day with the partner points you would earn across the five, six, or seven rentals needed for that day. Then subtract any partner-reward fees. A single high-rate Free Day can be worth much more than a modest number of airline miles, but the answer depends on your tier, rental pattern, and how you redeem.
How to Redeem Emerald Club Free Days
Once a member reaches the applicable threshold, National automatically converts the credits into a Free Day. Members can redeem through the National website or app by selecting the option to use reward days during the reservation process.
Free Days cover the base time-and-mileage rate. The member remains responsible for taxes, airport and concession charges, license-recovery fees, one-way or drop charges, fuel, tolls, optional products, underage-driver fees, paid upgrades, and other applicable costs. A “free” day can therefore leave a meaningful balance, especially at an airport or on a one-way rental.
National permits up to seven Free Days on one eligible National rental. The program supports redemptions at participating locations in the U.S., Canada, and a selection of countries in Europe, Africa, Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean. Check National's current Free Day location list rather than assuming that a National branch participates.
Redeeming Free Days at Enterprise
U.S.- and Canada-based members can redeem earned Free Days at participating Enterprise neighborhood locations in those countries. The reservation must be made by phone at least 24 hours in advance. Airport locations are excluded, and transferred Free Days do not qualify for this option.
The same tier-based vehicle limits apply: up to midsize for Emerald Club, up to full-size for Executive, and any passenger car class except trucks and exotic vehicles for Executive Elite and VIP members. Review the current Enterprise redemption terms before booking.
Transferring Free Days
National allows a member to transfer up to three Free Days per calendar year to an immediate family member. National's FAQ says the recipient must share the member's address. The program rules list examples such as a spouse or domestic partner, a child age 21 or older, or a parent.
Rental credits cannot be transferred. Once a Free Day is transferred, it cannot be returned to the original member's account. The recipient receives a coupon code, and the transferred day is generally valid for one year from the month of transfer. Contact Emerald Club Member Services to request a transfer.
Do Emerald Club credits and Free Days expire?
Rental credits remain valid as long as the membership remains active. They are forfeited if the membership ends.
For members residing in the U.S. and many other countries, a Free Day expires on December 31 of the year after it was earned. For example, a Free Day issued in 2026 generally expires on December 31, 2027. Canada and several European countries have different expiration rules, so members outside the U.S. should review the residency-specific terms.
The automatic conversion creates an important planning issue. A base member with six credits can hold those credits without an expiration date, but the seventh credit creates a Free Day and starts its expiration period. National does not let members keep accumulating an unlimited balance of unconverted credits once they reach the threshold.
How to Get Emerald Club Elite Status Faster
Travelers do not necessarily need 12 National rentals to reach Executive status. National offers a public status match, and several
National status match
National's status-match program accepts valid elite status from more than 40 participating car rental, airline, and hotel loyalty programs. The application requires an Emerald Club number and proof showing the member's name, current status, and expiration date.
Approved members receive Executive or Executive Elite status based on the status National matches. The matched tier is valid through February 28 of the second calendar year following approval. Thus, a match approved in 2026 is scheduled to remain valid through February 28, 2028. To retain the tier after the matched period, the member must meet National's standard rental or rental-day qualification during the full calendar year following the match.
The current terms do not promise approval, a particular matched tier, a processing time, or unlimited repeat matches. Treat the result as discretionary and rely on the terms displayed when you submit the request.
Credit cards with Emerald Club Executive status
Enrollment is required for card-provided rental status; simply holding an eligible card does not automatically update an Emerald Club account.
American Express currently lists complimentary National Car Rental® Emerald Club Executive® status as a benefit of these cards:

- The American Express Corporate Platinum Card®
- Hilton Honors American Express Surpass® Card
- Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card

Eligible cardholders should enroll through the benefit link in their American Express account. Existing Emerald Club members can link their card through that process to upgrade an account.

Card-provided status is separate from rental-car insurance. Executive status does not cover vehicle damage, theft, liability, personal belongings, or medical expenses. Review the coverage terms of the card used to pay for the rental and decide whether to accept or decline the rental company's optional products based on that coverage.

Best Ways to Use Emerald Club Free Days
Free Days have no fixed cash value. Their value depends on the eligible vehicle's base rate for the date and location, minus any cheaper rate or promotion you give up by redeeming the reward.
Target expensive base rates
Holiday weekends, major events, and last-minute rentals can produce high daily rates. Those dates are natural candidates for a Free Day, but search with and without the reward before booking. Award inventory, eligible vehicle classes, and promotional or corporate rates can change the comparison.
Only Executive Elite advertises Free Days with no blackout dates. Base and Executive members should not assume a vehicle will be available for a Free Day simply because National sells a paid rental for the same date.
Compare one-way rentals carefully
A Free Day can reduce the base rate on an expensive one-way rental. However, it does not cover the separate one-way or drop charge. Compare the itemized totals instead of multiplying the displayed daily rate by the number of redeemed days.
Use the right vehicle-class benefit
The tier determines the maximum class a Free Day covers. A base member may get excellent value from an expensive midsize rental, while an Executive Elite member can use the same reward for a much costlier eligible premium or specialty passenger vehicle. Trucks and exotic vehicles remain excluded.
Do not confuse Aisle access with the Free Day vehicle limit. An Executive member's Free Day covers up to full-size, while Executive Area access may provide a larger vehicle from the available selection when the member reserves the required class at an eligible location.
Important Emerald Club Limitations
Emerald Club can be extremely useful, but it does not remove the need to compare rates and read the location's terms.
- National may cost more: Counter bypass and vehicle choice have real value, but another company can still offer a lower total price.
- Aisle services are location-specific: The best-known Emerald Club benefits are concentrated at participating U.S. and Canadian locations.
- Vehicle choice is not a vehicle guarantee: The Aisle lets you choose from the vehicles present when you arrive. Reserve a specific class if the trip requires it.
- Free Days do not erase the bill: Taxes, fees, optional products, fuel, tolls, and one-way charges remain payable.
- Partner rewards replace rental credits: Selecting airline or hotel rewards means giving up the Emerald Club credit for that rental, although the rental may still count toward status.
- Enterprise participation has limits: Qualifying Enterprise rentals can earn Emerald Club credits and status, but Emerald Club elite benefits do not carry over to the Enterprise rental experience.
- Memberships are individual: The Emerald Club member must be present for the rental. Family members cannot use someone else's account, although eligible Free Days can be transferred.
- Status is not insurance: Emerald Club benefits do not provide collision, theft, or liability coverage.
Our Take
Emerald Club is one of the stronger rental-car programs for travelers who value speed and vehicle choice. Even the free base tier can bypass the counter at an Emerald Aisle location, waive a qualifying second-driver fee, and turn eligible National and Enterprise rentals into Free Days. Executive status is the sweet spot for many travelers because it opens the Executive Area and reduces the Free Day threshold from seven credits to six — and several credit cards provide that tier after enrollment.
The program is less compelling for travelers who consistently find much cheaper rates elsewhere, book through opaque or prepaid third-party channels, or rarely rent at locations with Emerald Club services. Long rentals also earn credits slowly compared with a series of short rentals.
Enroll before the first eligible rental, choose rental credits unless a partner reward provides clearly better value, and compare paid and Free Day totals before redeeming. Used that way, Emerald Club can save time at pickup and deliver meaningful value without requiring a traditional points balance.
