Hilton Honors has announced a promotion giving new members up to 7,500 bonus points after completing two stays. The offer, which runs through December 31, 2019, is not available to existing members—registration for the promotion must be completed at the time you create your Hilton Honors account.

Update: Several readers have reported that, at one point, it was possible to register for this promo with an existing account. It seems the landing page has intermittently allowed existing-account registration. For those that did successfully register, points are reportedly posting for this promo. We do our best to provide accurate info about promotions, but this scenario is a good reminder of why it's always a good idea to try to register for deals (even when the terms and conditions indicate you may not be eligible). Hat Tip to DCS and Thomas for sharing more details about their experience.

Key Terms

  • The promotion is valid for stays through December 31, 2019.
  • The offer is open to new Hilton Honors members who enroll and register for the promotion.
  • Earn 2,500 bonus points after you complete your first stay (regardless of the number of nights).
  • Earn a further 5,000 bonus points after you complete your second stay (regardless of the number of nights).
  • If you only complete one stay, you will still earn the 2,500-point bonus.
  • The bonus points are in addition to the base points you will earn for your stay.
  • The promotion can not be stacked with any other Hilton offer.
  • The offer is only valid for one-time use.
  • Allow six to eight weeks for the bonus points to post to your account.

Is It Worth It?

If you can take advantage of the promotion and pick up the full bonus, then this offer has a decent return (although it is not worth writing home about). If you are looking to earn a bonus for joining a hotel loyalty program, then you may want to have a look at the current offering from Marriott, which runs through December 29, 2019. With the Marriott promotion, you will earn a free night at a property valued up to 25,000 points per night, after joining and completing two stays. While a free night is worth far more than 7,500 points, choosing between Marriott and Hilton will ultimately depend on your stay patterns and locations. If you have multiple upcoming stays and don't already have an account with either program, there is no reason you can't take advantage of both offers.

If you are a current member, this deal may not work, (but it might be worth checking the landing page occasionally to see if that changes). Instead, you'll want to register for Hilton’s double point promotion, which runs through September 8, 2019 or the recently announced “Power Up Your Points” deal that runs through January 5, 2020. (New members should also register for the existing-member offers to earn even more points.)

Our Take

If you are thinking of taking up Hilton membership and switching your loyalty, then this promotion is a great way to start your Hilton Honors journey. On the other hand, if you are a current Hilton member, this promotion is not of any use.

Hilton has a great lineup of rewards cards that can help you get more value from your Hilton stays. Here's our post summarizing the options and benefits.

  • “If you are a current member, this deal isn’t an option.”

“On the other hand, if you are a current Hilton member, this promotion is not of any use.”

That is not how to help out your readers! Let them know that the promotion likely won’t do them any good if they are current Hilton Honors members, but *then* urge them to try out their luck, anyway, because it’s frequently happened that even folks who were not eligible for a promo based on its terms and conditions (likely because it is targeted as this one apparently is) could still successfully register for it.

In fact, when this very promo was initially launched, many current members, including this one, were able to successfully register for it before it was pulled and then relaunched. I already completed one qualifying stay since registering and the promo points posted:

Aug 2019 Media Join Hilton Honors and Earn 7,500 Bonus Points – Hilton Buenos Aires: 2500

I expect to get the remaining 5K promo points after my second qualifying stay at the end of this month.

Moral of the story: One should always try to register for *every* promo, even those for which one should not be eligible based on the T&C. There is nothing to lose for trying out one’s luck, but there could be quite a bit to gain if one lucks out!

    • Hi DCS, did you create a new Hilton account to register? If you found a working link for this promotion that allows you to register without creating a new account, please share. Otherwise, we wouldn’t be doing any favors advising folks to register when the only working link at the moment is for new members. The registration page was down for a week after launch (Maybe to fix a glitch that allowed existing members to register?). Please let us know if there is still a way to register an existing Hilton act. Thanks!

      • Having followed this from the start, several weeks ago, this “Media Join” (as Hilton seems to have named it) promo was released,. the landing page did indeed allow existing members to register. Then the landing page was changed/updated, and the existing members field was removed. Then, for a day or two, the existing members field was back, only to be removed once again. Seems like the middle-ground here would be to acknowledge that all of that has happened, and suggest that existing members interested in trying to register check in on the page from time to time to see if anything develops. (And FWIW, those of us that were timely enough to register our existing accounts for theis promo, these points are posting for stays.)

        • Hey Thomas, thanks very much for the clarification. I’ve updated the post to reflect the new information. We really appreciate you and DCS taking the additional time to write about the opportunity. We’ll try to be quicker to update in the future when this type of opportunity pops up.

  • It seems rather silly this promotion, despite its mediocrity, isn’t available to current members.

  • I registered for this offer before this offer was pulled and relaunched. I will see if I get the bonus points after my next Hilton stay.

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

I’m not sure what one could purchase with such generous points after two stays. What I do know is that their points expire which is a real deterrent to me returning.

  • Disappointed that it’s only for new members. I haven’t stayed in a hilton for a while, and this would have been a great incentive.

  • Too bad existing users can’t benefit

    • Check the landing page periodically. Existing members could register when the promo was launched, perhaps the existing user field will return.

  • Steven William Van Meter says:

I would consider taking up Hilton, but I’d like to see some changes first. Firstly, once they get your email, they spam you too much.

  • Bill from Maine says:

Wow, so much negativity about an offer designed to drive more business their way. Spam, points expiration for no activity, 7500 bonus as mediocre. Rather than quibbling over trivial things, why not check out what the program can do for you.
What program today doesn’t spam you. The points expire after 1 year of inactivity. If you can’t manufacture 1 additional point during that time period, you’re probably staying somewhere else. Other than IHG & BW, almost all the major programs have an expiration time period for inactivity. 7500 points after 2 stays plus the bonus points you earn with the credit cards and staying at the hotel isn’t mediocre.
If you aren’t eligible for this promo, sign up for the current 3X bonus points promo going on now for credit card holders (2X for non card owners).
With Hilton, the points do add up quick and lots of their cards get you Gold status which gets you free breakfast, room upgrades and even more points. Compared to other programs, Hilton seems to put something together every quarter.

    • If one is lucky, 7500 points will get them about 25% of the way towards a free night at an airport or other not so desirable location. If that’s not what most people would consider mediocre, I don’t know what is.

  • It’s a pity that it’s open only to new members.

  • Even if this promo were open to existing members, it’s not very lucrative.

  • Most of the people who read this are already members. Too bad we’ll have to sit this one out. Thanks for pointing out the other two promotions though.

  • That sounds good. Hope they will add to my account last week reservation’s points.

  • Is there a page where you all have an up to date list of all current promos?

  • Seems they had a better deal when you would receive 10k points after each 4 stays. Old promotion but was a great way to rack up points over summer travel.

  • come on Hilton??? you can do better than this!

  • Thank you for the post , it’s bad existing HH members can not get a benefits

  • This promo wasn’t just for new members! I’ve had my account for ages and once in a while I was finally targeted by Hilton to take part in this promo.

  • Was a massive fail from Hilton.
