Qatar Airways has launched a new promotion, allowing Privilege Club members to buy Qpoints with 40% off when renewing or upgrading to a higher status tier. This promotion is valid through March 28, 2024. Does it make sense to buy Qpoints with this offer? Here's a closer look.

Reduced Tier Qualification Requirements

Qatar Airways has announced reduced tier qualification requirements for members whose status is up for renewal through March 31, 2024.

However, standard terms apply to members whose status is up for renewal after that date. To retain your status, you need to meet the following Qpoints thresholds:

Status tiers and Qpoints requirements

12-month retention requirements:

  • Silver: 135 Qpoints
  • Gold: 270 Qpoints
  • Platinum: 540 Qpoints

24-month retention requirements:

  • Silver: 270 Qpoints
  • Gold: 540 Qpoints
  • Platinum: 1080 Qpoints

A bit short on the requirements to retain your status level? Want to move up? Qatar Airways will let you buy some Qpoints.

Key Terms

  • Receive 40% off on Qpoints purchases.
  • Promotion is valid until March 28, 2024.
  • Only Privilege Club members are eligible for Qpoints purchases.
  • The cost per Qpoint is $15.
  • Qpoints can only be purchased online.
  • Platinum, Gold, and Silver members can purchase Qpoints to retain their current membership tier.
  • Gold, Silver, and Burgundy members can purchase Qpoints for tier upgrades.
  • Qpoints are non-refundable and non-transferable.
  • All standard Privilege Club program terms and conditions apply.

If you are just short of retaining your status, purchasing a few points may be a great option. However, this only makes financial sense if you are close — not buying up to the next tier. Paying $225 if you're 15 Qpoints short might make sense, given the benefits you'll receive over the next year. However, paying $2,025 for 135 Qpoints (the difference between Silver and Gold status) probably isn't worth it.

Our Take

Is Qatar Airways having problems with the number of elites in its program? Perhaps.

Regardless, it is now easier than ever to retain your status by purchasing Qpoints with a 40% discount, allowing you to hit the numbers you require without any issues.

If you are a little short, you still have an ace in the hole and can purchase a few Qpoints to reach your tier qualification requirements. Although considering the high cost, you can decide if that is a worthwhile use of your cash or not.
