One of my favorite business cards is the American Express® Business Gold Card. It earns well, adapts to your spending, and is often highly ranked on any best business credit cards list. The card's bonus earning categories get most of the attention. But one card benefit can help you offset nearly half of the card's $375 annual fee (Rates & Fees).

The monthly Amex Business Gold Flexible Business Credit is designed to help cover everyday business purchases. But used strategically, it can become a $20 monthly discount at places you already shop.

Here’s how the credit works and how to get the most value from it.

How To Use the Amex Business Gold Flexible Business Credit

The American Express® Business Gold Card‘s Flexible Business Credit provides up to $20 a month in statement credits. It applies after you use your card for eligible U.S. purchases at FedEx (ending October 1, 2026), Grubhub, and office supply stores. Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

FedEx and Grubhub

If you have recurring shipping costs with FedEx, this credit offers a simple monthly discount on those expenses. However, this won't benefit every business owner.

Grubhub can be nice, but plenty of other cards offer discounts on food delivery. For example, the American Express® Gold Card comes with a $10 monthly dining credit for eligible charges at select U.S. restaurants, including Grubhub.

I don't recommend using the Flexible Business Credit this way unless Grubhub is already part of your normal routine.

Office Supply Stores — The Ideal Redemption

Purchases at office supply retailers also trigger the credit. Office supply stores like Staples and Office Depot/OfficeMax sell more than traditional office supplies. You can find electronics, school supplies, furniture, household products, coffee, and a variety of other goods.

Occasionally, I'll stock up on toilet paper or coffee, or get some school supplies for my child. While the prices aren't always the cheapest, factoring in the $20 credit can make it worthwhile.

But the most flexible way to use your credits at office supply stores is to buy gift cards. Staples and Office Depot/OfficeMax both sell gift cards to a long list of other merchants. Staples also sells tons of gift cards online and regularly runs promotions.

At the time of publishing, Staples is offering over 240 gift card options of $25 or less:

If you have expenses elsewhere, adding this extra step can save a nice chunk of change. For example, as someone who visits Disney parks regularly, I'm always hunting for discounted gift cards. I often buy a $20 Disney gift card each month and combine it with others. Over time, that adds up to solid savings on a costly trip. You can apply this logic to anywhere you shop regularly if you find gift cards on the rack.

Other Reasons To Consider the Amex Business Gold

Using the Flexible Business Credit wisely can help offset the card's high annual fee, but it’s only one part of what the card offers. Depending on how your business spends, the Amex Business Gold can be an excellent fit for its high earning potential.

Flexible Bonus Categories

You can earn 4X Membership Rewards points on the 2 eligible categories where your business spent the most each month, 1X on other purchases. 4X points apply to the first $150,000 in combined purchases from these 2 categories each calendar year.

This structure makes the card more flexible than many other business cards. The electronics category is almost always one of my two top categories each month. For the other, I try to focus my spending in one specific category each month to maximize my returns.

Earn Amex Membership Rewards

Membership Rewards are one of the most flexible and valuable currencies you can earn, with AwardWallet users averaging 2¢ cents per redemption. You can combine points from the Amex Business Gold with other Membership Rewards-earning cards.

The value of Membership Rewards points depends largely on how you redeem them. You have many options for redeeming Membership Rewards, but not all offer great value. You'll likely get the best value by transferring points to travel partners. I prefer building up points to redeem for business- or first-class flights with international partners.

Bottom Line

The Amex Business Gold Flexible Business Credit may seem restrictive at first. But it can be used to cover hundreds of kinds of purchases if you're willing to jump through an extra hoop. While the credit is useful on its own, knowing you can turn it into a $20 monthly discount at merchants you already use makes this already valuable business card even more worth keeping.
