The ongoing war in Iran has significantly disrupted travel throughout the Middle East. In response to the closure of Qatari airspace, Qatar Airways is offering tier extensions of up to a year to elite members whose status was set to renew between February 28 and May 31, 2026.
And we finally have concrete updates as to what this looks like — here's what to know.
Qatar Airways to Offer Privilege Club Tier Status Extensions
Qatar Airways sent an email to Privilege Club members on March 16, 2026, with an update on airline operations and what it means for members. As you likely already know, the ongoing war in Iran has resulted in several airlines ceasing operations, including Qatar. Although some flights have resumed, Qatar Airways is operating at a significantly reduced schedule.
This email also stated that Qatar will implement tier status extensions for elite members whose status was due to renew during this period, so they can continue to enjoy their elite benefits. Unfortunately, no further details were provided; only that Qatar would email eligible members with more details in the coming days.

How long will Privilege Club elite status be extended?
Luckily, Qatar recently added some FAQs to its dedicated essential information page about these extensions. Keep in mind that Privilege Club elite status is calculated on a rolling basis rather than a fixed qualification year. So, if your tier was due to expire between February 28 and May 31, 2026, it can be renewed or extended based on how many Qpoints you have:
- If you have earned at least 90% of the Qpoints required to retain your tier by your renewal date, your tier will be renewed for an additional 12 months from your current expiry date.
- If you have earned less than 90% of the required Qpoints by your renewal date, your tier will be extended for an additional 3 months.
If your tier was set to expire by March 31, you should already see this update reflected in your account. However, tier expirations between April 1 and May 31 will be processed within 7 working days from March 26.

Here's what this looks like:
- To retain Silver, you typically need to earn 135 Qpoints within the last 12 months or 270 Qpoints within the last 24 months.
- To renew for an additional 12 months, you'll now need 122 or 243 Qpoints by your renewal date.
- To retain Gold, you typically need to earn 270 Qpoints within the last 12 months or 540 Qpoints within the last 24 months.
- To renew for an additional 12 months, you'll now need 243 or 486 Qpoints by your renewal date.
- To retain Platinum, you typically need to earn 540 Qpoints within the last 12 months or 1,080 Qpoints within the last 24 months.
- To renew for an additional 12 months, you'll now need 486 or 972 Qpoints by your renewal date.
The website also states that Qatar is continuously reviewing and assessing the situation until normal operations resume, so this might not be the last update we receive.

Bottom Line
If you have Qatar Airlines Privilege Club elite status, check your email. You should receive (if you haven't already) information on elite status extensions in response to the war in Iran. You are only eligible for an extension or renewal if your tier was set to expire between February 28 and May 31, 2026. However, you might end up receiving additional elite extensions or a temporary reduction in elite requirements if operations don't return to normal by the end of May.
