Big bummer: American Express is downgrading its newly renamed Amex Lodging Credit by adding a two-night minimum stay requirement on Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts® (FHR) bookings beginning January 1, 2027.

Platinum-branded cardholders will still be able to book single nights through the Amex FHR program, but only stays of two nights or longer will be eligible for up to $300 in statement credit.

Rumors have been swirling about the potential devaluation, first leaked by an eagle-eyed US Card forum member who spotted the change on an Amex test site. AwardWallet has now confirmed the negative changes directly with Amex, which go into effect in the next statement credit cycle.

Amex Platinum Lodging Credit Evolution

Amex introduced the annual hotel credit in 2025 when the issuer sharply increased the annual fees on the consumer and business Platinum cards. To assuage the sting, Amex also added a slew of new valuable benefits, including two semi-annual statement credits of up to $300 apiece on eligible stays booked through Amex Travel, totaling $600 yearly.

All hotels booked through The Hotel Collection require a two-night minimum, while the more premium Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts® program required only a one-night stay to qualify for the statement credit.

The Amex FHR program highlights premium hotels worldwide and offers elite status-like benefits to encourage booking through Amex Travel. While FHR properties skew toward the pricier side, stays booked through Amex Fine Hotels + Resorts® come with credits such as $100 toward food and beverage or spa treatments, as well as additional perks such as early check-in when available and guaranteed 4 p.m. check-out times.

Bottom Line

Until now, the $300 semi-annual credit meant that cardholders could score a free night outright on lower-cost destinations like Las Vegas or, in my case this week, Taipei. But this two-night minimum requirement meaningfully devalues the benefit, putting Amex on the same tier as Chase, which has always required a two-night minimum to trigger its similar $250 semi-annual credit on The Edit by Chase Travel properties.

It's not all doom and gloom: Amex also introduced a new partnership with Airbnb on October 22, and Airbnb Luxe stays booked through Amex Travel will also qualify for the $300 semi-annual statement credit. But the average Airbnb Luxe property costs hundreds of dollars per night, so you'll likely feel even less impact from a $300 savings — and the credit does not apply to everyday Airbnb stays.
