Due to Marriott's acquisition of Starwood Hotels back in 2016, both Chase and American Express offer Marriott co-branded credit cards. That complexity has led to a mess of restrictions when looking to apply for cards with each bank. It feels like a PhD is required to decipher the rules.
As if it wasn't bad enough already, the rules are getting even more restrictive.
New Rules on Amex Marriott Personal Cards
American Express just announced elevated welcome offers on its suite of Marriott cards, some with the best offers we have seen.
However, with those offers comes new restrictive language in the terms and conditions.

For example, the new welcome offer language on the Marriott Bonvoy Bevy® American Express® Card now states:
Welcome offer not available to applicants who:
(i) have or have had The Ritz-Carlton® Credit Card from J.P. Morgan, the J.P. Morgan Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card, the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy® Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy® Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold®Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Business® Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Rewards Business® Credit Card from Chase in the last 30 days,
(ii) have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or
(iii) received a new Card Member bonus or upgrade offer for the Marriott Bonvoy Bountiful™ Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless® Credit Card from Chase, or the Marriott Bonvoy Bold® Credit Card from Chase in the last 24 months.
The first part of the offer (i) describes those who have other Marriott cards that would be ineligible for this Marriott Bonvoy Bevy Card welcome offer. Notice that virtually all of the Marriott co-branded cards issued by Chase are now listed here. That means having any Chase Marriott card currently or in the last 30 days will prevent you from earning a welcome offer on any Amex Marriott personal cards. This hurts.
For reference, the previous language had several fewer cards listed under term (i):
Welcome offer not available to applicants who
(i) have or have had The Ritz-Carlton™ Credit Card from JPMorgan or the J.P. Morgan Ritz-Carlton Rewards® Credit Card in the last 30 days,
(ii) have acquired the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy™ Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold™ Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy™ Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 90 days, or
(iii) received a new Card Member bonus or upgrade offer for the Marriott Bonvoy Boundless™ Credit Card from Chase, Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy™ Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Rewards® Premier Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy Bold™ Credit Card from Chase, the Marriott Bonvoy™ Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase or the Marriott Rewards® Premier Plus Business Credit Card from Chase in the last 24 months.

Bottom Line
Current or prospective Marriott cardholders must now essentially decide between Chase and American Express-issued cards. Holding Chase-issued Marriott cards will lock you out of American Express personal card welcome bonuses.
At the time of publishing, the language on the Marriott Bonvoy Business® American Express® Card has not changed — at least for now. That means current Chase Marriott cardholders can still earn the welcome offer on that card.

But overall, this news is devastating. The ability to apply for and hold multiple Marriott cards from both banks has been advantageous for Marriott loyalists. Now, having to cancel Chase cards and wait 30 days in order to apply for Amex cards is a huge loss.
