United Airlines and Lufthansa Group have just expanded reciprocal benefits for their highest-tier elite members, giving MileagePlus Global Services members and Miles & More HON Circle members additional recognition and benefits when flying with participating partner airlines.
Here's what top-tier elite members can now expect.
New Benefits for Global Services and HON Circle Status Holders
United's top invitation-only elite membership, Global Services, already comes with a host of high-level perks, including highest priority on upgrades, chauffeur service at select airports, and lounge access.
But with this new reciprocal agreement, Global Services members will now be extended elite perks on all participating Lufthansa Group Airlines, including Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines, Brussels Airlines, Lufthansa City Airlines, and Discover Airlines. These are in addition to the benefits afforded to members with Star Alliance status.
Likewise, Lufthansa's HON Circle members will receive expanded benefits when flying on United Airlines.
The benefits provided will vary depending on the participating airline, but travelers can expect added recognition throughout their journey, along with benefits that may include preferred seating and extra assistance when irregular operations, such as delays or cancellations, occur.
It's worth noting that these new reciprocal benefits are exclusive to United Global Services and Miles & More HON Circle members. They do not extend to other United Premier status holders, Miles & More Senator status holders, or other Star Alliance tier-equivalent elites.
Why These New Reciprocal Benefits Matter
United and Lufthansa have partnered for years through Star Alliance and their transatlantic joint venture, giving travelers access to an extensive combined network. But until now, the top tier of each airline's elite status received only the standard Star Alliance Gold benefits when flying the other carrier.
The new reciprocal program changes that by adding another layer of recognition for United Global Services and Lufthansa HON Circle members. Instead of being treated solely as Star Alliance Gold travelers, these invitation-only elites can now receive additional recognition and benefits when flying participating partner airlines.
Are These Benefits a Sign of More to Come?
This rollout may be just the beginning. United has said additional carriers participating in the Atlantic Joint Venture could join the reciprocal recognition program over time, but it has not identified which carriers or provided a timeline.
If more partners ultimately join, the program could make premium travel feel more seamless by extending top-tier recognition beyond a traveler's home airline.
