With very few exceptions, there's rarely a reason to pay full price when you shop. Between loyalty programs, shopping portals, gift cards, coupon tools, and other technology available today, there's almost always a way to save at any retailer. And when you combine multiple savings strategies on a single purchase, it's called a “stack.”
Here are a few examples of reward stacks you can use to maximize your savings.
Your Reward-Stacking Toolkit
Many stacking techniques rely on apps, shopping portals, and loyalty programs that work together to multiply your savings. Here are some of the most useful tools to keep in your arsenal:
- TopCashBack — A cash-back portal that frequently offers some of the highest payout rates.
- Rakuten — Perhaps the most popular cash-back portal. It also has a mobile app and offers in-store cash back at participating merchants when you use a linked credit or debit card. Instead of cash back, you can also choose to earn Amex Membership Rewards or Bilt Rewards Points.
- United MileagePlus X — A mobile app that lets you earn United miles by purchasing eGift cards, dining at participating restaurants, and shopping online. MileagePlus X routinely offers 5X to 10X United miles per dollar at many merchants and restaurants.
- Fetch Rewards — Snap a photo of your grocery receipt to earn points redeemable for cash back or gift cards. Browse the app for bonus offers and activate them before uploading your receipt.
- Ibotta — A cash-back app that offers rebates on specific products. Add offers to your account, then upload your receipt or link your grocery loyalty card to automatically track eligible purchases. It's an easy way to save money on trips to the grocery store or drugstore.
- Cashback Monitor — A website that aggregates earning rates across shopping portals for thousands of merchants. Before making an online purchase, you can quickly compare which portal offers the most points or cash back.
- Upside — An app that offers cash back on gas, groceries, and restaurant purchases, often with discounts of 10% or more at participating businesses. Better yet, it stacks cleanly with Ibotta and a rewards credit card on the same transaction, creating an easy triple stack almost anywhere you shop.

There are two more pieces you'll want to complete your stacking toolkit:
First, you'll need a solid rewards credit card. Ideally, this is a card that earns bonus rewards on online purchases or an everyday card that earns more than 1X points per dollar spent (or more than 1% cash back) on every purchase.
Some everyday options include the Chase Freedom Unlimited® and the Capital One Venture Rewards Credit Card for personal spending. For business purchases, The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express is an excellent no-annual-fee option.

- Earn 5% on purchases through Chase Travel℠
- Earn 3% on dining at restaurants
- Earn 3% on drugstore purchases
- Earn 1.5% on all purchases

$95
- 5X miles per dollar on purchases through Capital One Entertainment
- 5X miles per dollar on hotels, vacation rentals and rental cars booked through Capital One Travel
- 2X miles per dollar on all other purchases

No annual feeRates & Fees
(Terms Apply)
- Earn 2X points on everyday business purchases such as office supplies or client dinners. 2X applies to the first $50,000 in purchases per year, 1 point per dollar thereafter. Terms and limitations apply.
Second, sign up for merchant-specific loyalty programs, such as Kroger Fuel Points or Chipotle Rewards. You might be surprised by how many retailers have loyalty programs. Plus, many regularly offer exclusive discounts, bonus points, and member-only promotions that can be stacked with your other savings strategies.
Real-Life Stacking Examples
Now let's put it all together. Here's what stacking looks like in practice at a handful of retailers.
Kroger quintuple stack
The grocery bill is one of the largest household expenses for many families, making it a great place to stack rewards. Shopping at Kroger (and its affiliates) is a perfect example. Here are five ways to save every time:
- Use the American Express® Gold Card. This card earns 4X Membership Rewards® points at U.S. supermarkets (on up to $25,000 in purchases per calendar year, then 1X). The card also comes with a ton of benefits that can easily justify its $325 annual fee (Rates & Fees).
- Clip Kroger app coupons. You can get nice discounts on items you buy often. Just make sure to add these to your Kroger account before checking out in-store.
- Earn Kroger Fuel Points. Typically, you'll earn 1X Fuel Points for every dollar spent. There are often coupons in the Kroger app for 2X Fuel Points on all purchases, and about once a month, you can get 4X Fuel Points on gift cards. Every 100 Fuel Points saves you 10 cents per gallon on up to 35 gallons of gas. By buying and reselling gift cards, I can consistently earn enough Fuel Points to save the maximum $1 per gallon when I fill up at Kroger.
- Download Ibotta. Before shopping, do a quick scan of the Ibotta app and save offers for specific items to your account. Since you can link your Kroger loyalty card to Ibotta, you'll earn cash back automatically on eligible items you added before checking out.
- Download Fetch Rewards, too. Upload your receipt to earn bonuses and additional savings on any eligible offers you've saved in Fetch for specific items you purchased.

(Terms apply)
- You may be eligible for as high as 100,000 Membership Rewards® Points after you spend $8,000 in eligible purchases on your new Card in your first 6 months of Card Membership. Welcome offers vary and you may not be eligible for an offer. Apply to know if you're approved and find out your exact welcome offer amount - all with no credit score impact. If you're approved and choose to accept the Card, your score may be impacted.

Triple stack on groceries with Upside
Kroger shoppers can take advantage of the quintuple stack above, but Upside offers a similar three-layer approach across a wider range of grocery chains. The stack looks like this:
- Claim an Upside offer at your grocery store before you shop. Offers of 10% cash back or more aren't unusual at participating locations.
- Add relevant Ibotta offers for specific items you're already planning to buy.
- Pay with a card that earns bonus points on groceries.
Three easy effort layers that work at any stores found on Upside.
Haircut triple stack
Here's an easy stack to use at your local Supercuts salon:
- Sign up for the Supercuts email list to receive a coupon for $2 off your first haircut.
- Several Chase cards are frequently targeted with a 10% discount when activated through Chase Offers.
- Then, use that card to earn rewards on the purchase.
Between the frequent $1-to-$3-off email coupons, a 10% discount through Chase Offers, and earning Ultimate Rewards points on the remaining cost, you can easily save around 20% on your haircut every time.

- Earn 100,000 bonus points after you spend $5,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening.
- Enjoy benefits such as 5x on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3x on dining, 3x on vacation homes, 3x on gas & EV charging, 3x on top streaming services and online groceries (excluding Walmart, Target, and wholesale clubs), 2x on all other travel purchases, 1x on all other purchases
- Earn up to $100 in statement credits each account anniversary year for hotel stays through Chase Travel
- Count on Trip Cancellation/Interruption Insurance, Auto Rental Collision Damage Waiver, Lost Luggage Insurance and more.
- Get a year of complimentary Apple TV when activated by December 31, 2026 - a value of $156.
- Complimentary DashPass which unlocks $0 delivery fees & lower service fees for a min. of one year when you activate by 12/31/27. Plus, a $10 promo each month on non-restaurant orders.
- Receive one statement credit of up to $120 every four years as reimbursement for the application fee charged to your card for a Global Entry, TSA Precheck® or NEXUS application.
- Transfer points to leading airline and hotel loyalty programs

- 3X points on eligible streaming services
- 3X points on online grocery purchases (excluding Target, Walmart, and wholesale clubs)
- 2X points on all other travel
- 1X point per dollar spent on all other purchases
Triple dip(stick) oil change
There are a few ways to save on oil changes, but here's a solid stack:
- Wait for a Groupon offer for a national chain like Jiffy Lube.
- Use a cash-back portal to buy the already-discounted oil change.
- Pay with your Freedom Unlimited or another card that earns solid rewards on everyday spending.
You save with the Groupon, earn cash back through the shopping portal, and earn rewards on the purchase itself. Better yet, you can often find a Groupon promo code for local deals and turn this into a quadruple stack.
Triple stack on gas
Saving at the pump is one of the easiest places to layer discounts, and the tools have only gotten better over time. Here's a reliable three-layer stack that works at Shell stations:
- Use the Shell Fuel Rewards program to drop the price at the pump. New members receive complimentary Gold Status, which saves at least 5¢ per gallon on every fill-up. You can also stack shopping, dining, and partner offers to unlock even larger per-gallon discounts.
- Claim an offer in the Upside app before you pull in. Upside regularly features cash-back offers of more than 10¢ per gallon at participating stations, and these stack with loyalty program savings. Just snap a photo of your receipt after filling up to confirm your cash back.
- Pay with a rewards credit card that earns bonus rewards on gas to add a third layer of savings on the same transaction.

- Earn 60,000 bonus ThankYou® Points after spending $4,000 in the first 3 months of account opening, redeemable for $600 in gift cards or travel rewards at thankyou.com.
- Earn 10 Points per $1 spent on Hotels, Car Rentals, and Attractions booked on CitiTravel.com.
- Earn 3 Points per $1 on Air Travel and Other Hotel Purchases, at Restaurants, Supermarkets, Gas and EV Charging Stations.
- Earn 1 Point per $1 spent on all other purchases
- $100 Annual Hotel Benefit: Once per calendar year, enjoy $100 off a single hotel stay of $500 or more (excluding taxes and fees) when booked through CitiTravel.com. Benefit applied instantly at time of booking.
- No expiration and no limit to the amount of points you can earn with this card
- No Foreign Transaction Fees on purchases
- 10X on Hotels, Car Rentals, and Attractions booked through CitiTravel.com
- 3X – Earn 3 Points per $1 spent on Air Travel and Other Hotel Purchases
- 3X – Earn 3 Points per $1 spent on Restaurants
- 3X – Earn 3 Points per $1 spent on Supermarkets
- 3X – Earn 3 Points per $1 spent on Gas and EV Charging Stations
- 1X – Earn 1 Point per $1 spent on All Other Purchases
Bottom Line
Stacking takes a little upfront effort to set up, but that's mostly a one-time cost. Once you know which tools work for your regular spending, it runs mostly on autopilot.
Apps like Ibotta and Fetch Rewards earn in the background without much active management. Upside takes an extra 30 seconds to claim an offer before you fill up. After a few weeks, checking before you spend becomes a habit, and the savings accumulate.
The bigger wins come from combining layers. A rewards card, a cash-back portal, and a card-linked offer on the same purchase can stack to 15–20% back without any complicated workarounds. Some grocery and gas stacks push higher. None of it requires a spreadsheet — just knowing which tools play well together.

A quad-stack that used to work beautifully was Marathon Gas: Dosh (3% cashback), GetUpside ($0.12/gal)), Marathon Gas Rewards ($0.25/gal+), and any given credit card with a gas bonus. Alas, they stopped participating in both Dosh and GetUpside, so I moved on to other gas stations that will allow the triple-stack between GetUpside, their gas rewards program, and my credit card.
Rakuten.com, the Rakuten Visa Signature card, and IHG Hotels is another. Earn Amex MR points through Rakuten and Delta SkyMiles via IHG.
Let’s hope that these merchants stay oblivious to our schemes….lol
Great lineup! I would also add another good place to check if you have chase cards, are the chase offers, which can stack with chase shopping portal. I just did a test to see if that will also stack with Rakuten-waiting to see.
Can you credit both DOSH and bumped at same time?
Many of these overlap. I’m not sure on that combo specifically. Let us know if you find out.
Let’s stack again and again
Thanks! Every time I learn something new, all I can think of is how many years sooner I can retire!
I always appreciate article like this from AwardWallet.
Fantastic information. Time for me to get started!
Fantastic information. Thanks for sharing!
I like the idea of stacking, and always try to stack benefits if possible and convenient enough.
DOSH seems simple, but not finding vendors in the program yet.
Double-dipping was like 101 of frequent program schemes.
CC points for spend, cashback sites and offers from the programs.
Let’s encourage more people to disclose other and more possibilities of stacking by expanding this article or a complement of it;
Thanks Richard.
The Bumped app shows a waitlist.
good tips, thanks! 🙂
Great article about points. Lots to think about.
Lots of stacking opportunities. Thanks for the synopsis.
This is awesome. I can’t believe I didn’t find this sooner – I’ll be stacking for groceries and everything else. Brb, I’ll be reading all these articles for the next 10 hours! Thank you!
Wow….thought I knew most of the ways to stack but a few in the list are new to me. Thanks for the great article!
Some interesting terminology in this article!
I love this! I love Ibotta! I use Kroger also and get my savings there and on gas.
I will have to look at the cash back apps or maybe Bumped.
I do several apps to get cash back by scanning my receipts. I use Shoparoo (to help support my kids school) and NCP Mobile (I get points that I can use towards items or gift cards) and Receipt Hog (points that I use to go to Amazon). It’s just that these do take a little bit more time to earn for me and I usually use them to help sup my Xmas shopping.
This article remids us that stacking is a must today!
Good article until the Jiffy Lube part. If you value your car, avoid this place! They will replace your oil/filter and forget to screw the oil pan bolt into place and your engine will bleed dry! I know of two people personally that this has happened to!
If the products you are buying are worth something to you that’s great, but if they are not then it’s the tail wagging the dog.
I like to stack. And I don’t like to waste money. Thank you for explaining the simple and convenient ways to stack even more.
One more thing, does anyone know if i can use this to flight Iberia? (BA partner).
Hey Joaquin, I’m not 100% clear on the question. You can book Iberia flights with British Airways Avios points and you can also transfer miles directly to Iberia Plus from Amex Membership Rewards and Chase Ultimate Rewards
I have used TopCashback (UK version) since some time and I can say that especially the last year the majority of transactions are not tracked.
Sometimes I use some airline shopping or Marriott activities to earn miles or points.
And of course I use the most appropriate credit card.
Thanks so much for this!
I am like WOW, seems like impossible to know all these opportunities unless someone takes the time to compile them all like the one who wrote this post !Thank you!
gotta stack, stack, stack. Sometimes its hard to remember.
I love these stacking tidbits! Some I had no idea you could do (triple and quadruple stacking). Great information I will definitely be using from now on!
I am amazed at how difficult it is to buy something for a good price. It’s a major time suck for me, and part of why I dislike shopping.
Anyone else not able to get fuel rewards to ever work properly? I always end up getting half the discount that the app says I will get. And their/Shell’s support is a joke.
very eye-opening. I’ve done a couple of these but never knew about the other options.
Nice, informative article. I would love to see an article on ways to liquidate gift cards.
Stacking is THE key to accumulating points on every day spend. As a barest minimum, use a rewards card via a Cashback portal.
thanks for the info in this. Its been a while since i’ve read an article where i found resources i didn’t know about before 🙂
Nice info. Def have to get more focused to take full advantage.
Wow, I knew about some of these but there are many I did not know. Will be checking them out. Thanks!
Thank you for the summary!
This is a neat list. I’d like to see a comprehensive list like stackable list like this for points accrual rather than cash back.
For example, linking SkyMiles and trueBlue accounts to Lyft for airport rides, or booking an open-table reservation via IHG.
Great info. Thanks
Thank you for highlighting the paramount importance of stacking.
Thanks for posting. Something new for me to work on. Do you have suggestions as to which program to try first?
I thought I was aware of what was available, because I usually try to stack benefits. But in this article I learned some new ways to stack benefits.
Nice to comment about reward points spending money but the only people who WIN sign up for CC bonus 100,000.
As for web sites that save you money I agree:
1. Amazon
2. Ebay
3. Kayak, Expedia, Hotels.com, Travelocity, etc all save on travel.
I shop at Kroger and this is a very useful post! I can’t wait to stack, stack, stack.
Wow so many things to consider…I have been missing out A LOT so far.
I know the feeling!
Great article! I need to do more stacking of benefits.
Love stacking with topcashback! I’ve gotten some hefty bonuses there – sometimes as much as 10%. You didn’t mention AAShopping portal. They have Bonvoy on there. Book Marriott with them and you get AA bonus points + Bonvoy bonus points.
Great article. Although this level of stacking described takes a bit extra effort, with the right credit cards and a shopping portal, double stacking on everything takes no time at all. Thanks for the hints to help us take it to the next level!
Great listing of available stacking methods. I find Cashback Monitor and Ebates are extraordinarily helpful and rewarding.
I should be happy to see all the ways to get more points but I’m also sad knowing I’ve been missing all these extra point opportunities
It can drive you a bit crazy though, so don’t feel too bad if you miss a saving sometimes
I use some of these tips and tricks myself. Just when you think you can’t save any more money, you more than likely can! Helpful article.
At least double stack is perfect goal nowadays!
The stack with FuelRewards and upside generally doesn’t work. Upside in Maryland at least adjusts down your cash back if it sees another discount such as with FuelRewards on the receipt.
THIS. You have inspired me to stack, I just got A dollar off my fuel per gallon!!!! Now I am sighing up for bumped, DOSH, ans Ibotta, I am nervous giving such personal info thou….
Whoa… triple stack. Now that’s what I’m talking about!
My typical stack for online shopping: Get discounted gift card to merchant from Raise, clicking through TopCashback or another portal and paying with my BoA Cash Rewards card; then, go through another portal to the merchant’s site to buy, adding coupons and logging in with my loyalty account if applicable. Be careful, some portals don’t give cash/points back on purchases made with gift cards, and pretty much all will exclude purchases made with promo codes not found on the portal.
For in-store, it’s either portal+Raise purchased with BoA, or MPX purchased with BoA or certain other cards*, or card-linked offers from the issuer + other card-linked offers (e.g. Ebates). Then coupons + loyalty as well.
*some cards will categorize an MPX purchase based on the merchant whose GC you’re buying. See DoC’s Payments Workshop for more.
great post! I love some of the sites mentioned!
.. except that you are assuming the time you waste [“spend”] following up on all these has no value: for most people, their time is literally more valuable.
Second, most/many of these only apply to US residents – certainly nobody else gets nearly the same credit card benefits.
Finally, each of these take their own little percentage. For example, TopCashBack which you say you have never had problems with, involves installing a toolbar, disabling adblockers, endless follow-up and charge their own annual fee. After 1 year I got perhaps $10 total – and they automatically took their annual fee…
This is an excellent article with great tips and advice for saving money when shopping! I plan to follow many of these ideas!
Great rundown. I also like using apps for restaurants that offer their own deals for each visit, thereby adding yet another layer of value.
I love the idea of this, but I’m skeptical of the rewards on some of these apps. I have cc’s and am a reward member to some restaurants and coffee shops, but I never thought of the grocery receipt app before. I’m wondering if it’s really indeed worth it or if it’s more of a hassle than it’s worth.
The Bumped app shows a waitlist to be approved.
Oh my gosh what a great article! So many real world and real life examples I’m going to implement myself. Thanks for sharing your efficient strategies.
Great article and very informative. I only wish there was something similar here in the U.K.
Good advice, but I will note that I had lots of problems with TopCashBack in the past, eventually leading to them locking my account for no apparent reason and the concurrent loss of my earned rewards, and I am not alone in this, so be forewarned.
Have used cashback sites seemingly forever. I play the long game. That means I use multiple popular sites, enabling me to usually get the best or very close to the best cashback % at the time. Of course, it definitely takes longer to accumulate on one site and cash out then, but I think the math works in long term. (My only concern is if I did rather concentrate on one and thus cash out sooner, the money is mine sooner, which has some value to it, especially if I turn around and invest it say. We’re talking pennies there, but I have never bothered to run the math. My time has a values, too. LOL.)
good article on the benefits of stacking benefits
This is an excellent article with an important message- if you put in the effort to look for a discount before you purchase something online or in store you will probably find a discount. Match this with a good points card earning more than one point per dollar and you are coming out way ahead and on your way to free travel and/or cashback.
I know a lot of you will be thinking much about the Ebates app. There are lot of people out there who have not heard of the Ebates app. While there are some that heard of it, but don’t know what this app is all about. so today, i will be reviewing what this app can allow you to do.
