Hyatt has announced the 2016 Gold Passport award category changes. While some properties will cost you more points, others will cost less over current rates. Overall, Hyatt has implemented some reasonable changes, not increasing the number of points required for any given category, only adjusting the categorization of some of their properties.

Hyatt Gold Passport LogoIn total, 50 hotels will move up in category while 56 properties will move down. The changes take effect for reservations made on or after August 1, 2016. Therefore, you have a little under a month to book hotels that are going up in category at the current rate. For those properties going down in category you have two options:

  1. Wait to book your reservation until August 1, 2016. The risk you run with this approach is a hotel filling up.
  2. Make your reservation now and then call Hyatt Gold Passport on August 1, 2016, requesting a credit for the difference. Make sure your reservation allows changes if opting for the latter.

Hyatt Gold Passport Award Charts

Hyatt publishes two award charts. One chart for a points booking and a separate chart for cash + points booking. It is important to keep in mind that while a room may be available for points booking it might not be available with cash + points, which are capacity controlled. If you're set on doing a Cash + Points booking check out the Hotel Hustle Tool where you can set up alerts to be notified when Cash + Points award is available.

Bottom Line

With 50 hotels going up in category and 56 going down in category, there is very little reason to complain, especially when the quality of the properties going up is similar to the quality of the properties going down. For now, the most important thing is to make sure you book properties you are interested in using points for that are going up in category listing before August 1, 2016. In most cases, you can cancel and redeposit points with no risk. Making a speculative booking on a property with its category going up might not be a bad idea.
