Of the four Delta SkyMiles elite status tiers you can spend your way to, Delta Gold Medallion shines brightest as the program's sweet spot.
You certainly enjoy more perks as you work your way up the elite tiers, but Gold Medallion strikes a compelling balance of value and attainability. Unless you’re flying weekly, it’s hard to justify going further.
Within the current structure, Gold offers the most practical mix of meaningful benefits and realistic earning requirements. From bonus miles to complimentary upgrades to free checked bags and more, there are clear reasons to set your sights on Gold Medallion.
Here’s why we consider Delta Gold as the Medallion elite sweet spot.
Delta Gold Medallion Benefits
After reaching Delta Gold, you'll enjoy the following perks:
Bonus SkyMiles on flights
Earn 8X redeemable Delta SkyMiles per dollar spent on base fares and carrier-imposed surcharges. If your ticket has a $200 base fare (after subtracting out the taxes and fees), you'll earn 1,600 SkyMiles. Basic Economy tickets are not eligible for earning SkyMiles.

Complimentary upgrades
As a Gold Medallion, you and one companion are eligible for complimentary upgrades on all tickets except Basic Economy. Upgrades to Delta Comfort+ and domestic First Class begin 72 hours before departure. You’re also eligible for same-day upgrades to domestic Delta One. While you’ll sit behind higher-tier elites on the upgrade list, Gold members often clear into Comfort+.
Gold Medallion elites can also receive complimentary upgrades on select Aeromexico flights.
Access to preferred seats
Select preferred seats for free starting at booking.
Free checked bags
When flying Delta (and select partners), you'll receive two complimentary checked bags. The benefit also extends to up to eight companions on your reservation when traveling on Delta-operated flights.
Same-day confirmed change
You can make a same-day confirmed change to another flight at no charge, as long as you request it within 24 hours of your originally scheduled departure. This can be especially useful if your plans change at the last minute.
Priority airport services
As a Gold Medallion, you'll get access to priority check-in counters, fast-track security, priority boarding, and expedited baggage services.
SkyTeam Elite Plus status
Delta belongs to the SkyTeam alliance, which has nearly 20 member airlines. With Gold Medallion status, you automatically receive SkyTeam Elite Plus status — unlocking reciprocal perks like extra baggage allowance, priority services, and access to SkyTeam lounges when flying internationally.

Hertz benefits
Gold Medallion members receive complimentary Hertz Five Star status. You’ll also earn 6 SkyMiles per dollar spent on the base rental rate when booking Hertz through Delta’s website.
Dedicated phone line
You'll get high-priority phone service when calling Delta. While Platinum and Diamond members are still ahead in the queue, you’ll be prioritized over Silver Medallions and general SkyMiles members.
Savings on Delta Vacation packages
Delta elites can save on Delta Vacations packages — even when paying with SkyMiles. Here’s a look at the current discounts:
- $75 savings on packages costing up to $1,499
- $125 savings on packages costing $1,500–$3,999
- $200 savings on packages costing $4,000–$6,999
- $300 savings on packages costing $7,000-plus
Preferred pricing on a CLEAR Plus membership
Instead of paying $209 annually for a CLEAR Plus membership, Delta offers a discounted rate of $169 for its Gold Medallion members — a $40 savings.

Drink vouchers
Enjoy four complimentary drink vouchers that you can use on a Delta flight to enjoy alcoholic beverages during your time in the air.
Upon request, Delta will send you physical bag tags for free so you can show off your Medallion status.
How To Earn Delta Gold Medallion Status
In a semi-recent update to the SkyMiles program, Delta changed the game and made status earning entirely dependent on earning Medallion Qualification Dollars. In short, if you want Delta Gold, or any other status for that matter, you'll need to spend money with Delta. It no longer matters how far or how often you fly with the airline.

Delta Gold requires $10,000 MQDs in 2026. Thankfully, there are multiple ways to earn MQDs and a few ways to accelerate your progress. Here’s how:
- Earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on the ticket price for Delta-marketed flights operated by Delta or one of its many partner airlines. Basic Economy fares do not earn MQDs.
- Earn MQDs by spending on eligible co-branded American Express cards at the following rates:
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card: Earn 1 MQD for every $20 spent on the card.
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card: Earn 1 MQD for every $10 spent on the card.
- Delta SkyMiles® Platinum Business American Express Card: Earn 1 MQD for every $20 spent on the card.
- Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card: Earn 1 MQD for every $10 spent on the card.
- Purchase a vacation package and earn 1 MQD per dollar spent on the total package value, excluding taxes and fees.
- Leverage MQD promotions when Delta releases them, such as this one, where you can earn bonus MQDs on hotel, rental car, and vacation rental reservations.
If you hold an eligible Delta Platinum- or Reserve-tier credit card, you’ll receive a $2,500 MQD “head start” each year, per card. Those MQDs count toward the current qualification year — putting you 25% of the way to Gold without flying a mile.
Hold two eligible cards (for example, the personal Delta Platinum Amex and the business Delta Business Platinum Amex), and you’re already halfway there. Delta’s co-branded credit cards can significantly speed up your path to elite status.

How To Get Delta Gold Medallion Status for Life
As a perk of Delta's Million Miler program, you can secure Gold Medallion for life after accruing 1 million flight miles. Mileage flown on Basic Economy fares will not count toward your Million Miler status. All other eligible Delta flight miles do.
To check your progress, log in to Delta SkyMiles and look for the “Million Miler Status” square.
Is It Worth Earning Delta Gold Medallion Status?
Gold may be the sweet spot among Delta’s tiers — but that doesn’t automatically make it the best tier for you.
In light of the recent changes to the SkyMiles program, it's easy to see why earning Delta Gold might not be worth the investment. Loyalty isn't really a two-way street anymore. Plus, you're all but required to pick up a Delta American Express credit card to get status. Not everyone wants to route everyday or business spending into SkyMiles.
And then there’s the currency itself. SkyMiles can be tough to love. They typically aren’t as valuable as other airline miles, though there’s still solid value in certain redemptions — like short-haul domestic routes and partner flights that don’t touch the United States. At the same time, pricing on premium itineraries, especially in Delta One, can be eye-watering.
Whether Gold status makes sense ultimately depends on how you travel. If you’ll use the free checked bag, preferred seating, priority services and occasional upgrades, the perks can easily justify the effort. If you’re chasing status purely for the bonus miles, the math may not be as compelling.

On the other hand, the day-of-travel perks that come with Gold status are tangible. A free checked bag and complimentary preferred seat selection can make trips more comfortable — and more affordable. You’ll also have access to Sky Priority check-in counters, saving you time at the airport. And when flying internationally on SkyTeam partners, Gold status unlocks lounge access through SkyTeam Elite Plus.
You can pick up many noteworthy perks by carrying a Delta credit card
A good handful of the perks that make Delta Gold worth a look are also available via Delta's credit cards.
For example, the Delta SkyMiles® Gold American Express Card offers a free checked bag, priority boarding, in-flight discounts, and a 15% discount on Delta award bookings. Even better, you don't need to earn thousands of MQDs to get those perks. The card carries a reasonable $0 introductory annual fee for the first year, then $150 (Rates & Fees).
It's worth listing the perks you want on Delta flights and exploring the cheapest way to get them. For many, carrying a Delta credit card is all that's required to make each journey a little more comfortable. A single Delta round-trip for you and your spouse where you each check a bag (total cost of $140) alone nearly justifies the annual fee of the Delta Gold Card.

Of course, credit cards won’t score you many upgrades — status will. Gold members are eligible for Comfort+ and domestic First Class upgrades, though clearing isn’t guaranteed. If upgrades are your primary goal, elite status may still have appeal.
Final Thoughts
If Delta is your airline of choice, pushing for Gold Medallion status might be worth the effort — emphasis on might. Of the Delta Medallion tiers, it is the sweet spot for the perks it provides. However, you'll want to thoroughly evaluate what perks you desire on your Delta flights and explore the cheapest way to get them. For many, the perks they need will be satisfied by a co-branded credit card with a reasonable annual fee. But for others, it will still be worth targeting mid-level Gold status.
That said, if you travel with Delta constantly for work, you'll likely want to set your sights higher, at the top-tier Diamond Medallion. This is where you can enjoy premier benefits, but only with a lot of spending with the airline.
