Many airline credit cards offer statement credits to help justify the annual fee. The Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® is no exception. Each year, cardholders get up to $100 in annual statement credits for in-flight purchases on American Airlines.
While that sounds useful at first glance, recent changes — such as free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members — mean the credit may be harder to use than it once was.
Here’s what qualifies and how to actually use them on your next American Airlines flight.

How To Use the Citi AAdvantage Globe Card In-Flight Credit
First, a primer on what's available with the card. Each calendar year, primary cardholders of the Citi AAdvantage Globe Card earn up to $100 in statement credit on in-flight purchases.
What the Citi AAdvantage Globe Card in-flight credit covers
The credit applies to purchases made onboard domestic American Airlines or American Eagle flights and includes:
- In-flight Wi-Fi
- Beverages
- Food
However, the value of this benefit has already changed somewhat. First, American Airlines rolled out complimentary Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members in 2026. Additionally, if you’re flying in domestic first class or Main Cabin Extra, drinks are already included. That means the credit may realistically only cover snack boxes or occasional onboard purchases.
Also, be aware that purchases made on the ground won’t qualify, such as airfare, seat assignments, or bonus miles. Nor will purchases made on international flights be permitted, per the terms and conditions.
How can I use my Globe Card in-flight credit?
I'll use a real-world example to show how the in-flight credit works.
I flew in December 2025 before the rollout of complimentary Wi-Fi across the fleet. After taking my seat, I connected to the onboard Wi-Fi network and purchased access for the flight using my Citi AAdvantage Globe Card. Here’s how the original $28 charge appeared on my credit card statement.

A few days later, the corresponding credit appeared on my statement, fully offsetting the Wi-Fi purchase.

I also tried purchasing a snack box during the flight, but the card reader wasn’t working. The flight attendant ended up giving it to me for free — great customer service, but unfortunately not a great test of the credit. But we can assume the process is the same as the Wi-Fi purchase above.
Technically, the terms and conditions allow for 8–10 weeks for the credit to appear on your account. As you can see, it will likely appear sooner than that.
Other credit cards that have American Airlines credits
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® isn’t the only way to save on onboard purchases with American Airlines. Several other co-branded cards offer smaller discounts instead of statement credits. These include:
- Citi® / AAdvantage Business™ World Elite Mastercard®
- American Airlines AAdvantage® MileUp® Card (food and beverage only)
- Citi® / AAdvantage® Executive World Elite Mastercard® (food and beverage only)
In addition, cards like the American Express Platinum Card® offer a $200 annual airline incidental fee credit. You can use this credit on American Airlines if you select it as your preferred airline.

Bottom Line
The Citi® / AAdvantage® Globe™ Mastercard® offers up to $100 per year in statement credits for onboard purchases, which can help offset the card’s annual fee.
However, the benefit may be less valuable than originally planned. With complimentary Wi-Fi now available for AAdvantage members and drinks included in premium cabins, many travelers may find the credit mostly useful for occasional food purchases onboard.
