Capital One announced Choice Privileges as a transfer partner way back in April of 2021. But, it was unclear when this transfer partnership would actually launch. Well, you can now take advantage of this transfer option. Transfers went live on January 2, 2022. Here’s what you need to know about transferring rewards from Capital One to Choice — including how and when it’s a good value.
Capital One to Choice Transfers
Capital One has three hotel transfer partners, which you can read about in our guide to Capital One transfer partners. Choice Hotels — and its loyalty program Choice Privileges — was announced as a “coming soon” transfer partner back in April of 2021. However, you could not transfer your Capital One miles to Choice Privileges until recently. This became possible on January 2, 2022.
Good Redemption Options
You can only redeem awards with your Choice Privileges points within 100 days of your stay — which is a quirk unique to the Choice program. However, there can be good value in redeeming points via Choice Privileges as you'll typically spend 6,000-35,000 points per night for a room. The exception to this is in Southeast Asia, where some rooms can cost up to 75,000 points.
The general idea is that you should look to use your Choice points when the cash price for your desired hotel is high.
On average, Choice Privileges points are typically worth around 0.6¢ for room redemptions. However, the redemption rate you can get from Choice can vary widely. This redemption in Manhattan has a value of 0.88¢ per point and would save a lot of money each night:
But it's not just high-point redemptions that can save money and achieve good value, either. For 10,000 points per night in northern Sweden, you can seek out the Northern Lights and get a redemption value of almost 1¢ per point.
Even better, this low-point redemption in Paris has a value of 1.4¢ per point. This provides an exceptional redemption value:
Transfer Times
Since the ability to transfer Capital One miles to Choice just started, we don't have any data yet on transfer times. However, from our prior data on transfers of Capital One miles, many of these transfers are instant. With the exception of Asia Miles, other Capital One partner transfers typically process within 24 hours. We believe the transfers to Choice should be instant as well.
Should You Transfer Capital One Miles to Choice Privileges?
Admittedly, Choice Privileges is not the most popular or desired program in the points and miles sphere. That being said, there is good value to be had. Plus, Choice Hotels are available in numerous locations. They might even be down the street from a very expensive Marriott or Hyatt property where the amount of points you need is hard to swallow. In these instances, I find Choice redemptions to be a good option.
Do the math to see if you are getting good value for your money. If so, then it can be worth it to transfer your Capital One miles to Choice.
