In recent history, we've seen card issuers add an influx of monthly, quarterly, and yearly credits to cards to drive top-of-wallet spending and engagement with certain brands. No issuer does this more than American Express. The American Express® Gold Card is such a card with these credits, one of the newest being a monthly up-to-$7 credit (enrollment required) you can use at Dunkin', the popular donut and coffee shop.

In the spirit of maximizing every credit across my slate of credit cards, here's my experience redeeming the credit at Dunkin' and more details on how it works in practice.

How To Use Your Amex Gold Dunkin’ Donuts Benefit

The Dunkin' benefit is exclusive to the American Express® Gold Card. You won't find it on any other Amex cards. (At least yet.)

Amex Gold Overview

The Amex Gold comes with a $325 annual fee (Rates & Fees) and a large slate of benefits. As a new applicant for the card, you can earn 60,000 Membership Rewards points after you spend $6,000 on eligible purchases in the first 6 months. And the card has several valuable spending categories that can help you amass a large balance of points quickly.

Additionally, the card comes with many credits that can help offset its annual fee. This includes $10 per month in Uber Cash, $50 semi-annually to Resy restaurants, a $10 per month dining credit (valid for use at Grubhub, The Cheesecake Factory, Goldbelly, Wine.com, and Five Guys), and the subject of this post: a $7 per month credit at Dunkin'. Enrollment is required for select Amex benefits.

Steps to use the Amex Gold Dunkin’ credit

There is one crucial step that every Card Member needs to take before using their Dunkin' credit. It's rather frustrating, but American Express requires the Basic Card Member (aka the primary cardholder) to enroll in each credit on the card before the first use. Click here to enroll — if you haven't already.

After that, you can begin to use your credit each calendar month. You can elect to use the credit at any U.S.-based Dunkin' or through Dunkin's mobile app. The credit works on one or multiple transactions — up to $7 per month.

The location must accept American Express cards, which may not work in airports or at pop-up locations at events. Additionally, the credit isn't eligible for gift cards purchased online.

Once a purchase is made at Dunkin', the cardholder should expect to receive credit on their statement within eight weeks. Hopefully, it doesn't take that long.

My Experience Using the Amex Gold Dunkin’ Credit

One morning, I took my Amex Gold Card and headed towards the Dunkin' near my house. I'm not a big fan of Dunkin's coffee (please don't come at me loyal fans), so I opted for donuts.

I went through the drive-thru and ordered a half dozen glazed donuts for a total cost of $9.71. That means my out-of-pocket expense for this excursion should come to $2.71 (plus gas) courtesy of my Amex Gold. Shortly after payment, I received my precious donuts.

I've experienced issues with other types of statement credits posting to my account in the past, but the customer service team at American Express has been great to work with on these types of issues. But, no issues here. The Dunkin' statement credit posted to my account later the same day!

Overall

The new Amex Gold Dunkin' credit is a novel one. That said, it's part of an annoying trend, in my opinion, of card issuers creating new credits to “deliver more benefits” on cards with newly heightened annual fees.

I wasn't a regular at Dunkin' before, so I'll now be making a monthly pilgrimage to score some donuts. But, to me, this feels less of a benefit and more of a chore as a Card Member.
