American Airlines and Marriott have partnered to offer a new promotion offering bonus AAdvantage miles on upcoming Marriott stays. Now through December 15, 2024, you can earn up to 2,000 bonus AAdvantage miles on eligible Marriott stays in Mexico.

Here are the details of this offer, which brands are participating, and whether you should earn points or miles.

Up to 2,000 AAdvantage Miles on Marriott Stays in Mexico Promotion

This promotion allows Bonvoy members to earn between 500 and 2,000 bonus miles per stay of 2+ nights in Mexico. How many bonus miles you earn depends on which brand you stay at:

  • 500 bonus miles at City Express hotels
  • 1,000 bonus miles at Courtyard, Four Points, Fairfield, AC Hotels, Aloft, and Residence Inn hotels
  • 2,000 bonus miles at EDITION, The Ritz-Carlton, The Luxury Collection, St. Regis, W Hotels, JW Marriott, Marriott Hotels, Sheraton, Delta Hotels, Westin, Le Méridien, Renaissance, Autograph Collection, and Tribute hotels

AAdvantage Miles on Marriot Stays in Mexico Promotion

Members must book eligible stays using promotional code MR6 by December 17, 2024, and complete the stays by February 17, 2025. Stays must be a minimum of two nights, paid for fully with cash (not points or a free night certificate), and booked directly with Marriott.

There is no limit to how many miles members can earn with this promotion, but restrictions apply. Members might not earn miles during peak periods or events, blackout dates apply, and a limited number of rooms are available for this offer. Some properties offer upgrades and family rooms for an additional charge.

Choosing between AAdvantage miles and Bonvoy points

To take advantage of this promotion, you must set your earning preference on Marriott stays to AAdvantage miles. And this really does come down to preference.

If you set your Marriott earning preference to AAdvantage miles, you'll earn:

  • 2x miles at the following brands: The Ritz-Carlton, JW Marriott, EDITION, Autograph Collection, Renaissance Hotels, Marriott Hotels, Marriott Vacation Club, Gaylord Hotels, MGM Collection with Marriott Bonvoy, Delta Hotels by Marriott, Design Hotels, Le Meridien, The Luxury Collection, Sheraton, St. Regis, Tribute Portfolio, W Hotels, Westin
  • 1x miles at the following brands: Courtyard by Marriott, Fairfield by Marriott, SpringHill Suites by Marriott, Residence Inn by Marriott, TownePlace Suites by Marriott, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Marriott Executive Apartments, AC Hotels by Marriott, MOXY Hotels, Protea Hotels by Marriott, City Express by Marriott, Four Points Express by Sheraton, Aloft, Element by Westin, Four Points by Sheraton

For comparison, here's how you earn Bonvoy points on Marriott stays:

  • 10x points at the following brands: Ritz-Carlton, St. Regis, Edition, The Luxury Collection, W Hotels, JW Marriott, Marriott, Sheraton, Marriott Vacation Club, Delta Hotels, Le Meridien, Westin, Four Points by Sheraton, Springhill Suites by Marriott, Fairfield by Marriott, AC Hotels, Aloft Hotels, Autograph Collection, Design Hotels, Renaissance Hotels, Tribute Portfolio, Gaylord Hotels, Courtyard by Marriott, Moxy Hotels
  • 5x points: Residence Inn, TownePlace Suites, Element, Homes & Villas by Marriott International, Apartments by Marriott Bonvoy, Protea Hotels, City Express by Marriott, Four Points Express by Sheraton
  • 2.5x points: Marriott Executive Apartments
  • No points: Residences properties, such as JW Residences or Renaissance Residences.

As you can see, the earning rates vary by brand. However, the lists of brands aren't identical between the two options. So, it might be worth earning 1x AAdvantage mile instead of 2.5x Bonvoy points at Marriott Executive Apartments. However, you probably want to earn 10x Bonvoy points at Courtyard hotels vs. 1x AAdvantage mile.

This promotion's up to 2,000 bonus AAdvantage miles can shift the math a bit. But also keep in mind that the current Marriott global promotion also offers Bonvoy members 4,000 bonus Bonvoy points per 2+ night stay.

So, it's worth considering all of the aspects when choosing whether to earn Bonvoy points or AAdvantage miles from your Marriott stays.

Key terms

  • Book an eligible stay of two or more nights in Mexico using promotional code MR6 by December 17, 2024.
  • Complete the stay by February 17, 2025.
  • Earn 500, 1,000, or 2,000 bonus points per stay, depending on the brand.
  • Only valid on rooms booked directly with Marriott, paid for in cash at the Member Rate.

Our Take

This is a great promotion for Marriott Bonvoy members who prefer to earn AAdvantage miles on their stays. Of course, you might also want to take advantage of this offer if you need a few more AAdvantage miles for a flight or other redemption.

Remember that this is only for 2+ night stays in Mexico, booked at participating brands by December 15 and completed by February 17, 2025. Also, depending on the brand, you might only earn 500 bonus miles. The maximum 2,000 bonus miles only applies on stays at premium and luxury brands.
