One of the costliest mistakes one can make with credit card points is miscalculating the requirements for a new card sign-up bonus. Whether you don't spend enough, miscalculate the initial promotion end date, or assume the credit card fee counted towards the minimum spending threshold, there's a lot of pitfalls to avoid.

If you have a ThankYou rewards-earning card like the Citi Premier, Citi Custom Cash, or the Citi Double Cash, Citi has an easy-to-use “New Cardmember Bonus Tracker” for new credit cardholders.

With the Citi bonus tracker, cardholders can quickly see how much they have spent to date. In addition, they can see how much more they need to spend to hit the minimum threshold to trigger a new account bonus.

Why is it important?

Right now, Citi is offering some great welcome bonuses that would be a shame to miss. For example, the Citi Premier® Card currently offers a 60,000-point bonus, a $100 annual hotel savings benefit, and no foreign transaction fees.

The Citi Premier is one of the best rewards cards available for a $95 annual fee (catch our full Citi Premier card review for details). It would be unfortunate to miss out on any of the welcome bonuses simply because you make a mistake while tracking your spending.

Both the website and the mobile app display all of the information you need to make sure you receive your new account bonus points, including:

  • The amount of points of your new account bonus
  • The minimum spending requirement
  • Deadline date to meet the spending requirement
  • How much is left to spend to trigger the bonus

Our Take

The Citi sign-up bonus tracking tool has been available for a while. However, it is especially useful now that travel is back in full swing and there are plenty of great earning opportunities.

The new account bonuses on Citi's ThankYou Rewards cards offer fantastic earning opportunities. If now is a good time for you to open a new card — or if you have multiple rewards cards and are juggling spending on those cards to hit multiple welcome bonuses — the Citi sign-up bonus tracking tool makes tracking your progress much simpler.

With a quick glance at the tracker, you can see where you are on the road to securing your new account bonus.
