Let’s find out some good ways of redeeming those 75,000 IHG Rewards points!
Hands down the best IHG redemption is for PointBreaks properties. These redemptions are only 5,000 points a night! They aren't always in most convenient locations, but they do list a lot of properties world-wide.
Use Them for IHG Hotel Stays
Using your IHG Rewards points for stays at IHG hotels (known as reward nights) is by far the best method of redeeming them, far more profitable than exchanging them for gift cards or airline miles. Every reward point used towards domestic IHG reward nights is valued between 0.3 – 1 cent each, depending on the property and the travel dates. You can stretch your points’ value even further by redeeming them at the IHG’s international properties. There’s a difference of around 0.1 cents per point between the domestic and international IHG hotels.
So, let’s say you’re planning a nice Vegas getaway with your spouse. Your IHG rewards points can come in real handy to get you a stay at The Venetian or The Palazzo for around 60,000 points per reward night.
You could use your 60,000 points for a night-stay at either of these hotels and save the balance of your points for another stay where you can combine your cash with points.
Visit the IHG Rewards Nights page: Now use the ‘Search IHG Hotels Worldwide’ tool for looking up the different options available for your travel dates. You can even use the ‘Advanced Search’ and carry out a more targeted search using some additional search options – for instance, selecting from the different IHG brands and amenities, specifying the number of adults, children and rooms, room preferences, smoking preferences, etc.
You can either use all your points for booking your reward night/s or choose the Points & Cash option to pay partly by points and remaining by cash. For instance, per reward night at The Candlewood Suites: Las Vegas (an IHG brand airport hotel with a pretty neat rating) costs 15,000 points + $40. You could book a 4 nights’ stay here by redeeming your 75,000 points and paying an additional $40 in cash. Not a bad deal for a 4 nights’ stay at a decent IHG property in Las Vegas.
Please keep in mind that the number of points needed for booking reward nights at IHG properties correlates to their corresponding tier or category. There are a total of 9 hotel categories. While bookings in category 1 hotels may set you back by around 10,000 points per night, category 9 hotels’ cost can go up to 60,000 points per night. You should compare the list price of a hotel with the rooms available at other hotels in the same category/tier.
So, if you’re getting a $300 room in a category 7 hotel for 40,000 points and a $180 per room night category 5 hotel for the same number of points, it’d be much better to pay for the former with your rewards points and the latter with cash.
Now, if you’re keen on springing a nice international beach holiday surprise on your better half, here’s a look at the rewards points it’d take you to book room nights at a nice holiday destination like Mauritius!
Buy Gift Cards with Them
Again redeeming your IHG points for gift cards isn't the most valuable, but it's an option.
A birthday coming up in the family?! Cut down your task and simply exchange your IHG rewards points for a few amazing gift cards! You could split your 75,000 points between 2-3 different cards, or purchase an extra 2,000 points to pick up something like a $200 Amazon gift card. Visit this page to find out all the gift cards on offer.
Donate Them to Verifiable Charities
Charity on your mind? You can use your IHG rewards points for a good cause by donating them to verifiable charities. IHG works extra hard to ensure that its charitable donations are used in the best possible way to have the most relevant impact on the society as a whole. The charities supported by it are involved in initiatives such as the creation of local economic opportunities, disaster relief, environmental sustainability, etc. Only organizations having verifiable charity status are supported. IHG guarantees that your money/points will never be used for any religious or political organizations. Furthermore, organizations that discriminate by national origin, age, creed, religion, physical ability, gender or race, aren’t supported either. Many independent agencies have reviewed IHG’s charitable donations and have given them pretty impressive ratings. You can visit this page to exchange your rewards points for IHG’s ‘Shelter in a Storm’ disaster relief initiative.
After reviewing various redemption options, we’ve concluded that the best way to redeem your 75,000 IHG Rewards Points is by exchanging them for free stays at the IHG’s domestic and international properties. Other methods like transferring them to air miles, using them for gift cards’ purchases, shopping at IHG’s online catalog, etc. decrease their value significantly.
Please also keep in mind that your IHG Rewards points expire after 12 months of account inactivity. So, it’s always a good idea to keep earning and redeeming these points every once in a while.
