LifeMiles always seems to offer a transfer bonus from one bank program or another. This month, it's back to being Citi's turn. Now through November 5, 2023, you can convert Citi ThankYou points to LifeMiles with a 25% transfer bonus. This matches the 25% transfer bonus for Citi transfers to LifeMiles offered in June 2023. Through this transfer bonus, you'll end up with 1,250 Avianca LifeMiles for every 1,000 Citi ThankYou points transferred.

Is This Offer Worth Jumping On?

First and foremost, we don't recommend speculatively transferring your points just to take advantage of a transfer bonus. With the nature of award travel, which is constantly changing, you risk being stuck with “orphaned” currencies when you transfer your points with no specific redemptions in the making.

With that said, LifeMiles offers tons of excellent value — particularly on partner airlines. Here's a look at some of the incredible uses of LifeMiles.

Redeeming LifeMiles on Partner Airlines

Avianca is part of the Star Alliance airline partnership which means that LifeMiles can be used to book flights on any of 26 member airlines. And Avianca doesn't tack on carrier-imposed fees for their partner award bookings. So, using LifeMiles is a great way to save a lot of cash on notoriously expensive flights — expensive due to the crazy fees airlines add on.

One of our favorite Avianca partner sweet spots is for short-haul domestic flights on United Airlines. Domestic United flights generally cost 7,500 LifeMiles each way but AwardWallet found at least 112 United routes pricing at just 6,500 LifeMiles.

For example, flights from Denver to Grand Junction can cost a small fortune. However, a one-way award flight on this route costs just 6,500 LifeMiles. That's just 6,000 Citi ThankYou Points when transferring during the 25% transfer bonus. (Note that you need to transfer in increments of 1,000 points.)

Another one of our favorite LifeMiles redemptions is flying Lufthansa from the mainland United States (ex: Chicago) to Europe (e.g. Frankfurt). For a standard award ticket in business class, you'll pay 63,000 LifeMiles, which is already a pretty great deal. When you add in the current LifeMiles transfer bonus, though, the deal gets even better.

Instead of 63,000 Citi ThankYou points, you only need to transfer just 51k ThankYou points to book this award during this transfer bonus. Since Avianca does not tack on carrier-imposed fees, you'll only pay around $50 out-of-pocket.

Even better, you can take advantage of a quirk in LifeMiles' award pricing to book lie-flat business class from New York (JFK) to Lisbon for 35,000 LifeMiles one-way. During this transfer bonus, you'd only need to transfer just 28k ThankYou points to book this business class award.

Redeeming LifeMiles for Avianca Flights

Using your Avianca LifeMiles when flying with partners is where most of its sweet spots lie, but there is still some great value to be found using LifeMiles on Avianca's own metal. A roundtrip business class flight from Los Angeles (LAX) to Bogota (BOG) runs 66,000 LifeMiles total. By taking advantage of the 25% transfer bonus, this flight would cost you 53k ThankYou points.

Colombia is an amazing country full of art, history, and a rich culture with some of the most hospitable and friendly people. We highly recommend a visit and thanks to LifeMiles, it's cheap and easy.

You can hop a quick flight from Bogota to Medellin, Colombia (pictured in the photo above) using just 2,250 LifeMiles — or just 2k transferred ThankYou points during the 25% bonus promotion.

Final Thoughts

This 25% transfer bonus from Citi ThankYou points to LifeMiles is one of the highest transfer bonus rates we've seen for LifeMiles. If you're planning to book some flights with a Star Alliance partner (or even Avianca's non-alliance partners like GOL, Iberia, or Aeromexico), this is a great way to stretch your ThankYou points that much further.

  • Can you elaborate on the: “quirk in LifeMiles’ award pricing” regarding TAP? Thank you.

    • That’s the example following that sentence. You can fly from JFK-LIS in business class for 35k LifeMiles one-way. Per the award chart, it should cost 63k LifeMiles.

      • Thank you for the clarification. Sorry I just saw your reply – I never got notification that a reply was posted.
