Alaska Airlines and Toronto-based Porter Airlines have partnered to boost connectivity between the U.S. West Coast and Canada. The tie-up — which goes live today — comes one month shy of Porter's inaugural flights between Toronto and two California cities: Los Angeles and San Francisco.

Here's what you need to know about the partnership.

Alaska and Porter Partner up to Connect the U.S. To Canada

Alaska Airlines has routinely been in the news lately, growing and expanding, adjusting its partner award charts, and now inking a partnership with a Canadian airline to become its 30th global partner.

In short order, flights on Porter Airlines — plus flights connecting to Alaska — will be available for purchase on Alaska's website. According to Alaska Airlines' blog, this should happen today — December 13, 2023.

The addition of Porter means greater access to Eastern Canada, specifically through two American gateways in the short term: Los Angeles (LAX) and San Francisco (SFO). Porter plans to launch flights to the two airports in January 2024 on its new Embraer E195-E2 aircraft.

Earning Alaska Mileage Plan miles on Porter

A partnership between the two airlines also means that Mileage Plan members can earn miles on Porter flights booked through Alaska's website. At a bare minimum, this means earning 100% of the miles flown and 100% elite-qualifying miles on eligible fares. Porter Reserve tickets earn at a slightly higher 125% mileage rate.

What's still to come

Alaska and Porter announced a mutual focus on expanding their partnership in 2024. This includes reciprocal benefits for Mileage Plan and VIPorter members, mileage redemptions, and more.

We're hopeful that the partnership will grow in early 2024 and bring new mileage redemption opportunities sooner rather than later. But if we had to make an educated guess, redemptions will start after Alaska's new partner award charts take effect next March.

Final Thoughts

Alaska Airlines and Porter Airlines just launched a partnership with the mutual goal of growing connectivity between the United States and Eastern Canada.

In short order, Porter flights will soon become bookable on Alaska Airlines' website, with mileage redemptions soon to follow in 2024. The two carriers have expressed interest in continuing to grow the partnership, so we'll likely be hearing a lot more about the Alaska-Porter tie-up in the coming months.
