Over the last six months, my family's driving has picked up noticeably with two kids now in pre-school along with many Spring and Summer trips to the airport. Since May, the average national gas price has flirted with $3 per gallon according to AAA. More driving and higher gas prices meant my finances needed a little reprieve from my monthly fuel expenditures.
In March, I discovered the Fuel Rewards® program, and by utilizing some of the many ways the program offers the ability to earn savings on fuel at Shell, I saw an instant and now sustainable impact, reducing what we spend at the pump by over 50%. Realistically, I think anyone can save on average 20% at the pump without too much effort (keep reading).
After spending the last four months having great success with the program, we reached out to Shell and are proud to announce an exclusive offer for AwardWallet and Award Travel 101 (our Facebook community).
Through August 31, 2018, if you sign up with Fuel Rewards, you'll receive 25¢/gallon in savings good towards your first fill-up at participating Shell stations, up to 20 gallons. Promotion open only to U.S. Residents.
In addition to those savings, you'll receive instant Gold Status, which provides an additional savings of 5¢/gallon for a total of 30¢/gallon savings on your first fill-up. The offer is good for new members only, so if you're already a member be sure to tell your significant other, parents, friends and co-workers of our exclusive offer which is 5x that of the public offer.*
Program Basics
The Fuel Rewards® program is not a credit card or credit program; it is a free loyalty program that provides real, immediate savings on something you use all the time — gas. If you aren't familiar with it, let's cover the basics of how you can earn additional savings which stack with the introductory offer to drive down the price you pay at the pump.
It's important to remember any savings shown on FuelRewards.com or in the Fuel Rewards mobile app is on a per gallon basis. If you have a rewards balance of $.56, that means you save $.56 on the price per gallon on your next fill-up at a participating Shell station, up to 20 gallons (Up to a total of $11.20).
Earn Rewards
You can earn Fuel Rewards savings in a variety of ways, but the simplest is to link a debit or credit card to your account (our favorite credit cards for fuel purchases) and then shop at participating grocers, retailers, restaurants and more. This is the ultimate double-dip; you set your card and earn without having to give up rewards you receive on your favorite credit card. Typically for every $50 you spend at a participating merchant, you'll earn at least 5¢/gal in Fuel Rewards savings. Other ways to earn include:
- Shopping online with brands you love and earning rewards for every $50 you spend
- Booking flights, hotels, and rental cars through fuelrewards.com and earning 5¢/gallon for every $50 you spend
- Shopping inside participating Shell convenience stores and earning 5¢/gallon for every $25 you spend in-store
- Keeping an eye out for limited-time and card-linked offers at participating merchants
Here's an easy way to increase your savings:
If you sign up today, you'll save 25¢ per gallon on your first fill-up plus an additional 5¢/gallon with instant Gold Status. If you then link your Fuel Rewards account to a Giant account (grocery store rewards) and do your grocery shopping at a participating Giant store, you'll earn an additional 10¢/gallon for every 100 points you receive from Giant. That means after signing up today and heading to the grocery store, you could already have 40¢/gallon in savings good towards your first fill-up at a participating Shell station. If you maxed out the 20 gallons, that'd be a total savings of $8 off fuel.
Redeem Rewards
Redeeming rewards happens at the pump at a participating Shell station.
- Select ‘Rewards' on the pump screen
- Either swipe your Fuel Rewards card or enter your Alt ID. The pump will roll back and reflect your price per gallon
- Swipe your payment card as you would at any gas station and pay the discounted price per gallon based on your Fuel Rewards savings balance
To make it super easy, you can redeem your rewards and pay for fuel with just a single swipe of your linked credit or debit card. Link your favorite card for use at the pump and opt-into Link & Save™. When ready to redeem, skip the prompts at the pump. Just swipe your linked card, and your rewards are automatically applied.
Best Practices
Here are my current strategies to maximize my Fuel Rewards savings and pay significantly less at the pump:
- My wife has been doing the majority of our online shopping through FuelRewards.com which is where the bulk of our rewards originate
- A new pizza restaurant in our neighborhood is participating in the Fuel Rewards dining program as well as two other local restaurants
- I check the locations map on FuelRewards.com before heading to Atlanta for the day; it's rather dense:
Our Take
We're thrilled to be able to bring this sign up offer to our readers after we've benefited significantly from the program. This is a paid partnership between Shell and AwardWallet, one I'm happy to present as since March I've saved $284.94 on gas; that's two weeks of groceries for my family.
*Restrictions apply. Limit 20 gallons. See fuelrewards.com/awardtravel for terms and conditions.

Easy signup and great savings.
Will this offer or something similar be available again anytime soon? I deliver in my car for my job, so saving money on gas is a constant struggle. Thanks!
Nothing is currently planned, but we hope you were able to save at least a few bucks on your first fillup.
Thanks, but new member only …
Thanks for the details in this article how to find & utilise this offer.
Wow! What an awesome deal.
Sucks I joined a few years ago
Ihg has a similar program now with better returns and higher returns with status in their program.
Unfortunately, Shell is the most expensive gas in my area, sometimes 10¢ or more than the average and 15-20¢ higher than the lowest price gas, so the net savings will be less than 25¢ for me. I wonder if they factor the discounts in the pump price.
Why to go through program hassle? Keep life simple. I use GasBuddy app to compare local gas stations prices and save.
Shell gas usually expensive. It’s not a money saving proposition unless you are chain to Shell.
Gas Buddy + Shop Your Way Rewards + Fuel Rewards + trunow. QUADRUPLE STACK IT
Thanks for making me look up trunow. “Quadruple stack,” even without the all caps, definitely got my attention!
Wait, what?
I’ve never heard about this offer…need to enroll today!
I’ll take 25 cents off gas all day long… I have Shell in my area so this works great for me
Thanks, as an UBER driver, I try to find ways to benefit from my gas expense.
I bought gas at Costco yesterday for the first time. It is much cheaper than using fuel rewards.
Helpful, thanks!
Unfortunately, Shell is not big in my area.
nice deal, but no Shell stations near me
My experience has always been Shell gas is more expensive. I don’t see it as a benefit to sign up, get a discount when there are better fuel programs out there. I guess to each their own.
nice starting perk for joining up
Great program for minimal effort!
Thank you for the offer!
I’m going to nudge my husband into signing up. I’ve been in the program already for a couple of years, but hubby needs to get on board!
I have signed up, I will see how much I can save?
not many places on the list in my area (Albuquerque). Seems a duplicate off AA and UAL shop/dine locations.
It seems like they have tied up with a lot of different programs. I wish they had the cheapest gas around to make this worthwhile.
It’s worth noting that you can link your IHG status to actually get an extra 6 cents off, not just the 5 cents for gold status.
Must sign up for this ASAP and take advantage of the savings to be had.
Great, will sign up now.
This has been a great program so far
Does this work for people who are already members of Fuel Rewards, or only for new sign-ups?
New sign-ups only. Friends, family, everyone else!
Easy sign-up !
Good to know. Not many shell stations here but ill sign up anyhow for when I do find one.
This is awesome! Thank you!
Now we shall see what Exxon Mobil has to offer when it comes to their new rewards program.
This is an excellent tip…Thank you for saving me money!!
This is helpful, as gas is too expensive!!
Now this is something that’s calling my name! Thanks for the information!!
I could use this thanks for the savings!
I usually go to my local Kroger, and I’m already a Shell rewards member. I did another promo they had. They have an agreement with Kroger here and so I go there or to my Kroger, which ever is closer.
I love that I get my savings at Kroger and Shell from my Kroger account. I was able to save my sister in law money when they visit from out of country this last week at a Shell. It’s awesome!
Now I just wish that I had BPs near me so I could get United miles :o)
Innovative idea!
Great tip, thanks!
How do I stop receiving emails every time someone comments on this blog? I had chosen the option to receive an email earlier when I wanted to see reply to my comment, but now I am being bombarded!
I removed it for you 🙂
Sounds like a great program. I just don’t have Shell stations nearby.
German Shell is newest Partner of Lufthansa Miles and More – is this the same with the US Brand?
Sorry, I don’t know.
I use this program in the Wash DC area. GIant Supermarkets is tied into them and I typically earn 10c per gallon discount per week by spending $100 on groceries.
gotta try this!
Not bad if you have a Shell station near by (I dont though)
This could be great for some. My personal experience is that Chevron and Shell fuel are 30 to 40 cents more in my area than other gas stations. So it would be gain me any.
Even with that difference, you’ve gotta look at the opportunities to rack up additional rewards – it could be well worth it.
sounds good.. Gas is just too expensive now, so will give it a try.
I use it, it is great!
As someone recently posted, cash savings vs. points is often an issue. As airline programs continue to be devalued, I know many people who are switching to cash back.
Link does not seem to be working to sign up. I am currently out of USA on trip…is that why?
Yes, appears to be the case.
Thanks for the info. Would never have paid attention to it at the gas station.
Costco is 75 cents cheaper than the cheapest Shell gas station in my area. not very useful. sigh
75 cents! I’ve never seen that big of a spread of gas stations in the same general area. Just wow.
Yes, at times, you’ll see that type of spread with a Costco station, but those stations are limited to Costco paying members, so not exactly an apples to oranges. (And, the reply function works again! :))
🙂
Thanks
I’m gonna give this a try
I find this program easier to use than other fuel rewards programs. The BP/United alliance rarely credits my points.
not bad- its something you need to buy anyway
What a breath of fresh air! Where we live, as it happens, there’s a Shell station about ten minutes from our house. I’ll be looking into this for sure.
As another poster commented, the dining program is the same one as where you earn airline miles for dining. So you can’t have the credit card signed up for both programs. This is unfortunate because I don’t see how I would earn points in any other way. (There are no Giant supermarkets near me.) So this is a situation where you have to decide if points are most important or is gasoline savings a priority. I’m in a situation where I’m not driving much anyway, so I will continue to earn airline points for my dining purchases.
Thanks! What a great deal!
Most of the gas stations in my area of the state and more importantly, where I travel, have switched over from Exxon/Mobil to Shell. I have read the promo signs every time I fill up but never signed up. With all the info I just read here, that will change next fill up. Thanks.
I have the rewards card and use it all the time. So easy!
Wow…so glad I installed this app. Thank you!
I’ve noticed other gas stations are generally $0.25 to $0.50 cents cheaper than Shell anyway.
Really? Where are you typically buying gas? That isn’t the case for me in any experiences.
Arco and Costco
Neither are options at all for me! 🙁
Honestly, Shell and Chevron are the top 2 most expensive gas stations I’ve seen. Almost anything else is cheaper, but the discounts you get may make the difference.
bummer I am not a new member. Great deal though!
this seems to be the same list of eateries shown by AAdining and UMPdining. Not a good list where I live (Albuquerque, NM). WE have plenty of Shell stations here, but the places to eat on the list is pretty small.
Wow good tip! Hidden treasures…
In 15 months I saves $955 on gas. This program is worth the effort
Yes! 🙂
Definitely going to have to check this out. Not usually going to Shell as they are usually higher in price, but this might make a difference.
I just cashed mine in tonight after signing up earlier today – free ice cream tonight TYVM!
Many thanks for the info – unfortunately there are no Shell stations that are convenient for me.
Okay, Thanks. I will give this a try. Gas is just so expensive.
Well, this will help!
