Singapore Airlines announced its latest partnership with Garuda Indonesia in an email to members. You can now earn and redeem Singapore KrisFlyer miles on select flights on Garuda Indonesia. The new partnership came into force on February 13, 2025, and while exciting for those in southeast Asia, it is pretty limited in scope.

Singapore KrisFlyer Mileage Accrual Rates on Garuda Indonesia

You will earn Singapore KrisFlyer miles on Garuda Indonesia flights at the following rates:

  • Business class (fare buckets C, D, J, and I): 125% of flown miles
  • Full-fare economy (Y): 100%
  • Economy (B, K, M, N, W): 80%
  • Discount economy (H, Q, S, T, V): 30%
  • Deep discount economy (L): 10%

Only earning 125% for business class fares isn't particularly lucrative. The earnings are much more variable in economy fares, with the highest earning being 100% and the lowest earning a measly 10% of miles flown.

Which Garuda Routes Earn Miles

One thing to keep in mind is that you will not earn KrisFlyer miles on all Garuda routes. In fact, according to the Singapore earning chart, you are limited to only three routes. You can earn KrisFlyer miles on the following routes:

  • Singapore-Jakarta (SIN-CGK)
  • Singapore-Denpasar (SIN-DPS)
  • Singapore-Surabaya (SIN-SUB)

Redeeming Your KrisFlyer Miles for Garuda Flights

When redeeming your Singapore KrisFlyer miles for flights on board Garuda, your options are minimal. Similar to the earning pattern, you can only redeem your miles for flights between Singapore and Indonesia. According to the limited award chart, you can redeem your miles at the following rates.

  • Economy class awards are 13,500 miles plus taxes and fees one way.
  • Business class awards are 24,000 miles plus taxes and fees one way.

A Less Than Stellar Partnership

Reading the fine print of this new partnership, it is clear that it is a first step and very limited in scope. The partnership's extent is earning and redeeming miles on select routes and nothing else. Other lacking aspects include:

  • Miles earned from this partnership do not count towards status.
  • No reciprocal benefits for elites of any kind.
  • No lounge access for elites unless they travel on a qualifying premium cabin ticket.
  • No mixed Itinerary redemptions with SIA and Garuda.
  • Miles takes up to six weeks to post to your Singapore account.

Our Take

You have to wonder why both airlines even bothered with such a limited partnership. While earning or redeeming miles is good, the lack of any other benefits is a significant letdown, especially for elites. While reciprocal lounge access may have been a step too far for such a limited partnership, maybe expedited check-in or priority boarding would have been nice. Hopefully, this partnership will succeed and be the first step in a deepening relationship with more benefits to come.
