In celebration of Earth Day 2024, Southwest is offering Rapid Rewards members the ability to earn 20 Rapid Rewards points for every dollar donated through the Southwest Carbon Offset program. This 20X promotion will run through May 19, 2024.

Here are the details about the program and how you can maximize your points through this offer.

Southwest Carbon Offset Program

The Southwest Carbot Offset Program is a way to minimize your carbon footprint by making donations to environmental programs. Through the program, you can calculate the estimated carbon emissions for a flight and donate funds to offset those emissions.

As Southwest processes this purchase, you should earn bonus points on your donation.

This program is not tied directly to your flight history. Instead, you can search for any flight route that Southwest Airlines has. Further, you can donate for more than one flight at a time. A small surcharge is added to each donation to cover the costs of running the program.

Normally, members earn 10 Rapid Rewards points per dollar donated, up to 500 points per month. That means you typically earn Rapid Rewards points on up to $50 in donations each month.

Donations are made to CHOOOSE, a Norwegian company funneling the money to charitable environmental organizations. Programs change from time to time. Currently, donations go to the following three programs:

  • Kootznoowoo Improved Forest Management Project in Alaska
  • The Guatemalan Conservation Coast
  • Delta Blue Carbon Project

20X Rapid Rewards Points for Earth Day Promotion

To mark Earth Day 2024, Southwest is running a promotion through its Carbon Offset program. Members will earn twice as many points through May 19, 2024. Instead of earning 10X points per dollar, members will receive 20X points. Furthermore, the maximum number of points you can earn has been increased to 50,000 bonus points per month. That means you can earn points on up to $2,500 of monthly donations during this promotion.

Furthermore, for every dollar you donate, Southwest will donate two more dollars to CHOOOSE.

In recent AwardWallet redemptions, users have gotten an average of 1.52¢ cents per Southwest Rapid Rewards point. That means you're earning around a 30% return in Southwest Rapid Rewards points for your donation — before factoring in credit card earnings.

Our Take

Many people are becoming more environmentally conscious these days. As such, donating to offset carbon emissions through the Southwest Carbon Offset program is a great way to feel better about flying.

Not everyone feels called to make charitable donations. And those who do should look into their options to ensure their dollars are going as far as possible. If you need more of an incentive than 20X Rapid Rewards points, remember that you might be able to claim a tax deduction for these donations.

After the promotion is over on May 19, you can still earn 10X Rapid Rewards points on carbon offset donations.
