Hilton Honors points are very useful for great stays across the nearly 8,000 worldwide Hilton properties. In addition to earning Hilton points on Hilton stays — particularly in conjunction with frequent Hilton Honors promotions — the best way to build up your Hilton balance is through Hilton's cobranded credit cards. However, Hilton also has some solid transfer partners for gaining more Hilton points.

Or perhaps you already have too large of a Hilton Honors balance? If so, you can also transfer Hilton points to Hilton's airline transfer partners to top off your account for a flight award. Finally, you also can transfer Hilton points from someone else to further increase your Hilton points balance.

Here's everything you need to know about transferring points in and out of the Hilton Honors program.

Of these, the Amex Membership Rewards program is one of the best options for transferring points to Hilton. On a normal basis, you can convert 1,000 Membership Rewards points into 2,000 Hilton Honors points — and this can be boosted by an Amex-Hilton transfer bonus.

How To Transfer Membership Rewards Points to Hilton

To transfer Membership Rewards points to Hilton Honors, you will need to log in to your Membership Rewards account and go to the “Rewards & Benefits” button.

Once you are there, select “Transfer Points”. A new page will load below showing all of the American Express transfer partners. There are several airline and hotel programs listed to transfer points to.

After selecting Hilton, you must enter your partner account number and the number of points you wish to transfer. You must transfer at least 1,000 Membership Rewards points. Although the Hilton points could take up to 5 business days to show up in your account, transfers are typically immediate based on AwardWallet user data points.

American Express offers transfer bonuses now and then in the 30% range. While this can help you with your transfers, it is not recommended to speculatively transfer between Membership Rewards.

In recent redemptions, Hilton points typically are worth 0.59¢ each, while Membership Rewards points are worth around 1.96¢ each. So even with a 30% transfer bonus, the value of the Hilton points gained is not as much as the potential from utilizing other Membership Rewards transfer partners. Only use this option when needing to top off a great award stay like the Conrad Bora Bora Nui!

Other point transfers to Hilton

Some other points programs that transfer to Hilton include Bilt Rewards and Virgin Atlantic. However, the transfer ratio of these is worse than transfers from the Membership Rewards program. It's best not to use these options unless you have an exceptional case — say, a large number of points in one of these programs that you do not plan to use anytime soon.

If you want to transfer from these programs to Hilton, you can log in to the reward programs’s website to link your and Hilton accounts. You can then transfer the points into your Hilton balance. You can also call the rewards program's customer service line for help transferring the points to Hilton.

Hilton Airline Transfer Partners

Once you've built up a stash of Hilton Honors points, you have other options for redeeming them than just booking Hilton hotels. One of these Hilton redemption options is transferring points to airline partners.

While this is generally a bad idea, there could be circumstances in which you may want to transfer your Hilton Honors points to airline miles. For example, if you are flush with Hilton points but need a few extra miles in your airline rewards program to get you on a trip. Otherwise, we would not recommend transferring speculatively between Hilton and the airline programs, as the transfer ratios eat into any value you might get:

How To Transfer Hilton Points to Another Person

If you're working with a Player 2 or other friends or family members, you can transfer Hilton points between programs to consolidate your points into one account.

To transfer Hilton points to another member, you will go to the Hilton Honors transfers page. Once there, you can input the number of points you wish to transfer and then enter the account information of the person receiving them. The person must already have a Hilton Honors account before you can submit a transfer.

Caution that you are limited to six total transfers per calendar year. So, it's best to wait until you need to consolidate points instead of transferring them without a plan.

Other limitations: You cannot send more than 500,000 Hilton points or receive more than 2 million points during a calendar year.

Another way to handle transfers is by using point pooling. This is a great option if there are a number of you saving Hilton points for a big trip. You can create a pool of up to 10 people by going to the Pooling option.

Also, you are limited to six pooling transactions per calendar year — just like point transfers. Points pooling also has the same limits of sending or receiving Hilton points as transfers.

Bottom Line

Typically, it is best to spend on Hilton credit cards or stay at Hilton properties to get lots of Hilton Honors points. But having the flexibility to transfer from other points currency to finish off reserving an award stay can be critical. Or even topping off a flight award by transferring from your Hilton points stash to certain airline programs. Always do the math first to make sure using these alternative options is the right decision for you!
